The post-Civil War, also known as the extended period that came to be known as the Gilded Age, was largely centered around and influenced by big business and corporations. This shows how big businesses are destroying small businesses in order to monopolize and how government needs to step in to help small businesses against unjust practices. This changes the economy because if there is only one business selling a product with a high demand then that company can make their prices as high as they want. This makes big businesses even more powerful because there will always be a demand for their products. Following the finish of the American Civil War, the period known as the Gilded Age emerged. During this period, industrialism increased rapidly as well as the amount of cities. However, with a growth of industries and cities, corruption and complications would also follow. Since businesses were booming and the economy was improving, the United States’ Presidents of this time period, such as Hayes, Garfield, and Cleveland, granted businesses large amounts of power in hopes of continuing the success of the nation. 1. “Now, what are they? Men at all? or small movable forts and magazines at the service of some unscrupulous man in power?” This is rhetorical Question with Compare & Contrast. Are they really having emotion? Or are they nothing but of control? We are just servicing the unjust. This is to both stand up against the government and show that they have too much power that is just “unscrupulous”.
The Civil War was an era that made people reconsider most norms of life. Many civil right movements erected after the Civil War in response to the reconstruction of social and political classes. These new ideas will lead society into conflict and a rise to groups that will threaten that transition. Slavery to northerners was mostly and estranged topic that very few knew or wanted to know about. It wasn't till literature like “Uncle Tom's Cabin” and “Ten Years on a Georgia Plantation” that people in free states took meaning to the horrors of slavery and how it affected the captured. Political ideologies quickly interconnected with social standards and made the Civil War distinctly between two groups of people with different objectives on where
President Abraham Lincoln, General William T. Sherman and Colonel Trowbridge's differing perspectives of the Civil War created very unique views of the war. President Lincoln saw the war as a painful and necessary burden for him to bear. General Sherman saw the war as a tool to rid the United States of the rebels that were attempting to dissolve the Union. Finally Colonel Trowbridge viewed the war on a much more personal level. He witnessed first hand men fighting the government of their former masters for their freedom. While all three of the men's views differed, all three held a singular belief that the union must be preserved. That need to preserve the union was the justification for the war that the three men used.
Mr. Berman's minute investigation is not only a contribution to the subject of conflicts between organized capital and organized labor - it goes to the foundations of the historical supremacy of the Supreme Court in the constitutional system of the American Commonwealth. Like every issue in economics and politics the same words may be given opposite meanings according to the leanings of the interpreter towards one side or the other of the conflict. Mr. Berman has rightly directed his attention to the meanings of words.
As it is a union newsletter, class is a major factor in its message, and it presents an argument that workers interests are diametrically opposed to the those of the
Alan leaned against the wall and sighed, staring at the newspaper he held in his hand that he’d payed extra for. For him it embodied his whole struggle. Ever since the stamp act was passed, he was losing money fast, and he knew it. With his ever-increasingly prevalent tuberculosis and another upcoming baby, he felt his hope and his future come out his mouth in deep red blood.
One strategy the author uses to effectively get his point across is the creation of a fictional character that supports the many abstractions with a few concrete details. The author introduces this believable fictional example in line 12. The author hopes the reader will relate the fictional characters to politicians that the reader knows about and apply the central argument to the real world. The author also creates metaphors that support his argument in lines 50-53. These metaphors help explain the passages main point without directly stating it over and over again. The author hopes to that the reader will gain a greater understanding of the issue by restating it in different terms. This appeals to the readers logos by logically explaining the
It uses the 1972 congressional primaries to exemplify how the more a candidate spends on their campaign, the likelier they are to succeed and win the race. Examples such as these only hold true in democratic countries, where there is no limitation on freedom of speech. If the text had been written in an autocratic state, such as North Korea, it would differ in the respect that it would not be written at all. Pratakanis and Aronson writing about how government officials gain a competitive advantage in an election would be seen as slander in places such as North Korea, which are under totalitarian regime. If in North Korea the two chose to write about Kim Jong Un and how he came to power, they could be putting their lives at risk. Therefore, they would be faced with two options: either omit any mention of government in the argument or bring in the government while propagating Kim’s reputation as an unchallenged leader. Neither of these options is beneficial, as they both deviate from the truth and the central argument of the text, which is how repetition influences decisions. Ultimately, the censorship some countries impart on their citizens would limit one’s understanding of such a text, which is why the place a text is written in is of utmost
