The praise can help children realize that their effort is valuable and that with the effort can come possible success. The motivation that their parents provide can be the foundation for self-motivation in the future, which creates more drive to continue with a challenging task. Children have the ability of recognising their own defeat, and the defeat in itself will already put the child down, so a scolding parent will not help the child’s mindset. Instead, when children are encouraged after a defeat and are provided with a positive environment, they will recognise their loss and will become stronger because of it. Another example of pride would be with John Proctor. John Proctor was your everyday man. He was a farmer, he claimed to be Godly though he was said to never attend church. Not attending church then was very frowned upon and even considered a horrible sin. His wife, Elizabeth Proctor, was accused of witchcraft by Abigail Williams. Abigail did this to get revenge because Elizabeth fired her. Elizabeth did this because Abigail had an affair with John. He would not confess to being associated with the Devil because it was not true and he did not want shame brought to his name. Though his wife talked him into confessing, he would not sign his name to the paper. Not only did he not sign his name; he also ripped up the papers. This shows a great deal of pride as well, being that he would not confess because of the way society would look at him thinking that he was associated with the Devil.

Pride is defined as a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction form ones own achievements. Pride has plagued individuals for centuries whether it is Napoleon trying to invade Russia at Waterloo or Hitler refusing to admit defeat in World War 2. There can be many different meanings of pride. Pride can be the allegiance towards a certain group or club, the pride one gives towards its own country, or even the pride that someone has internally within themselves could be another way to look at the definition of pride. Pride can be interpreted in more ways than one; it just depends on the way the word is being used.
