Environmental ethics are a guide to addressing the relationship between humans and the natural environment along with its non-human components. Having ethical standards is a huge component of designing for the well-being of people and the Earth. As designers, “it is to be our obligation to preserve the environment for the future generations to come” (Han, 2013). The Hannover principles created by William McDonough provide guidelines to follow when designing ethically. They speak on the importance of co-existence and creating long term, permeant buildings (Stacy, 2017). The foundation of environmental ethics feeds right into these Hannover principles. McDonough hopes that the “Hannover principles will allow is to continue to develop and live modernly as we have without compromising the ability of the world to support us” (McDonough, 1992). McDonough incorporates his principles into his own designs as well as his Cradle to Cradle method of design. Cradle to Cradle homes are “designed to produce more energy than they consume and have a positive impact on the environment” (“Cradle to Cradle® - Make It RightMake It Right,” n.d.) . The City Hall building of Venlo is inspired by the Cradle to Cradle methods. It provides a healthy workspace as well as an ethical design for the environment. The building aimed to enhance air quality both indoor and out and therefore provided natural ventilation throughout the building, designed the building to be completely covered in greenery, and
Snøhetta are concerned with the social dimension of architecture and this design imaginatively reinterprets the traditional opera houses that “conventionally limit their public spaces to exterior plazas or grand lobbies, often only accessible during opening hours.” What is striking here is that their Opera House succeeds in giving back to the city a public space. The sloping rooftop becomes a new public area: a recreation space and viewing platform that you can walk on, sit on, sunbathe on, even snowboard on. As a result anyone, whether interested in Opera or not, can enjoy the space. The building has been called "a social democratic monument” by founding partner of Snøhetta, Craig Dykers – and one can see why. In a recent television interview, Dykers went on to remark:
To keep our environment healthy, all these element need to work together. There are no global laws protecting the environment and that is why everyone should practice good ethics when it comes to the environment. Environmental ethics is the part of environment philosophy which considers extending the traditional boundaries of ethics from only including hum and to non-humans. There are many ethical decisions that human beings make with respect to the environment. Humans are been considered of rational agents because they have clear preference, models uncertainty via expected values, and always to perform the action with the optimal expected outcome of itself. The action of the rational agent performs depends on the
Many stories of the floods that washed over the city have been told, speaking of the sorrow of the people who were forced to move from their lifelong homes, the struggle to rebuild. Then, innovators, engineers, architects and planners banded together. Ingenuity spearheaded the movement to drive Genoa, Italy and all of Europe towards the future. Easily accessible, comforting and natural environments found in public spaces will greatly boost happiness and contribute to good health of the everyday citizen. Public space is a very powerful tool and Genezon aims to achieve full potential. In the eyes of the people of Genezon, old or young, there’s always that spark of hope, the hope of the people with the firm ground beneath them and the stars above them. The future is now and Genezon is on that horizon.
According to the author of “Taking the Lead” Felice Silverman, “the introduction of LEED v4 represents the next step in the evolution of sustainable design, but it’s interesting to note that as we learn more about creating green spaces, new concerns continue appear”. The example she gives deals with encouraging people as designers to see products earn third-party certifications, and designers should remember to look at more than just the single-attribute benefits of products. Designers need to be able to arm themselves with the best information on sustainability there is, and continue to review process, systems and products that could potentially cause harm to the environment and the people
"Sustainable Architecture" - this phrase in recent years is mentioned a lot. The concept of "sustainable architecture" is associated, even identified with the concept of green architecture, ecological architecture, environmentally friendly, energy efficient ... to reach a stable value for the environment human life, reduce negative impacts on the environment in the present and future. However, although this interpretation is correct, but only one aspect, because that's what people are missing and need to achieve. Try to reach and understanding of sustainable architecture in general and more simple ...
Furthermore, the Town House (O) is a sustainable environmental design project illustrating the relationship between human well-being, the welfare of the future generations and the natural world, through regeneration, the
“The family was building a home that met the strict guidelines of GREEN design” explained interior designer Linda Ruderman. “So I worked closely with them to select items designed for sustainable living”
In Cradle to Cradle: Remaking The Way We Make Things written by Michael Braungart and William McDonough try to recreate a new way to design and manufacture things by rethinking the basic parameters in order to establish a new, better system of manufacturing, one that will ultimately replenish and restore the earth, instead of destroying it like the one that is being used now(1). The authors state that we, as humans, should approach the concept of design and manufacture in a new way that will make the whole process of manufacture, consumption, and waste a process of that works in sync with both humans and nature, rather than damaging the nature. The authors start of by criticizing the current industrial framework as fairly primitive. It is formed over one main
For quite some time, life on earth has been nothing but peaches and cream for several people and because of people who live a non-sustainable life, it has left others with an indistinct outlook on earth’s future. Sustainability to me is doing things that will help prevent harmful things from happening to the environment now and in the future. With the support of the sustainability and more quality ways of living, the Earth Charter is gradually introduced. Through key research I will explain what the Earth Charter is and why it was founded, describe one of its four parts along with the goals and overarching philosophy, and share the impact it has on my life now and in the future.
Biophilic design is sometimes considered as just a ‘design fad’ or a way to gain benefit off of employees or students, however architects responded that Biophilia is not a trend, but is based on sound research that is constantly changing and improving throughout the years (Biophilic Design takes over U.S office space, 2016). Heath (Para. 8) argued to BBC television host, “Trends come and go, biophilic design looks to tap into human evolutionary preference for seeking out healthy landscapes that allow people to survive, thrive and flourish”. He also continued saying how Biophilic design is a solution dealing with urban stressful situations using nature. Biophilic design is not constant, but is improving and changing over time, because of this people are starting to understand the importance and benefits of engaging with natural elements in order to be comfortable, relaxed, and productive. Biophilic design has a to do with people’s health and mood in any commercial or residential building. In short,

Herzog makes ‘regularity and flexibility’ another architectural theme that is seen just as valuable to energy saving throughout the house. The plan of the house is designed to distribute or allocate space proportionally, which is layered via an abstract grid. Which can be combined in different ways either horizontally or vertically.
Ethics is the study of what is right and wrong in human conduct. Environmental ethics studies the effects of human’s moral relationships on the environment and everything within it (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2008). The ethical principles that govern those relations determine human duties, obligations, and responsibilities with regard to the Earth’s natural environment and all of the animals and plants that inhabit it (Taylor, 1989). The purpose of this paper is to reveal environmental issues that are threatening the existence of life on Earth, and discus our social obligations to refrain from further damaging our environment, health and life for future generations. I will discus the need for appropriate actions and the ethical
When many people consider their health the building they are standing in does not likely come to mind, but scientist research has found the built environment around us may correlate directly to our health outcome. These buildings are considered the built environment. In fact, the built environment includes all buildings, spaces, and products created or modified by people (article source). It is important to ensure safety and positive health incomes for our communities. To be able to do this we must consider our built environment. Srinivasan, O’Fallon, and Dearry take a closer look at this topic in their article “Creating Healthy Communities”. The aim of this composition is to evaluate this article, the key situations affecting, and the future trends of our built environment.
Since ancient times "designers" looked to nature for "solutions" to their common problems; they saw nature as the perfect model to follow. Ecotecture is the art and science of designing human systems that are integrated, functionally and aesthetically, with natural ecosystems. The word "ecotecture" is a combination of the words "ecology," meaning pattern of relations between living organisms and their environment, interactive with
