Term Paper The article that I chose is called "What choice?", and was published by TIME magazine on January 14, 2013. The author briefly discusses the various arguments made in favor of supporting abortion in the United States, as well as some reasons why the Pro-choice movement isn't fully implemented after the U.S Supreme court ruling Roe v. Wade was enacted. The article continuously draws back to the Red River Woman's clinic in North Dakota to emphasize some issues faced by the patients, physicians, and staff. Overall, the article made me consider some views regarding the legalization of abortion and how it was carried out. Nonetheless, my views supporting Pro-life has not changed. In this Article, one of the arguments …show more content…
The author stated, "In addition to North Dakota, three other states -- South Dakota, Mississippi and Arkansas -- have just one surgical-abortion clinic in operation"(Pickert, 2013). In addition to the difficulties in finding a clinic to get an abortion, the author states that there are other procedures a woman must go through such as counseling, verification, and tests which may be inconvenient. Architectural zoning requirements designed to make clinics safer is making independent clinics unable to make ends meet due to the new requirements they must maintain. Clinics are also the primary place where abortions are done which makes procedures more expensive because of lack of funding, opposed to hospitals which in most cases are financially secure. Another factor that set clinics up to fail is pro-life activists, which negatively impacts businesses by protesting, harassment, and violent acts. According to the article, Red River Woman's clinic's owner, Tammi Kromenaker, stated that the facility receives threatening mail and prayer letters from pro- life activists addressed to the patients and physicians. She uses different routes when going to work and is alert when performing daily activities because she knows she is a potential target for pro-life activists. Another point made by the author was that fighting to preserve access to abortion is harder than the fight to legalize it. Some reasons why this is, is because the pro-choice movements are led by an older generation, and doesn't really appeal as much to a younger demographic. The author quoted from Sandra Fluke, "We need more leaders in this movement that are of reproductive
Abortion is one of those heavy topics that either side can be right or wrong. Abortion mostly gets divided into two sides; Pro-Life or Pro-choice. On the side of Pro- life a person believes that the government has an obligation to preserve all human life, regardless of intent, viability, or quality of life concerns. On the side pro-choice a person believes that individuals have unlimited autonomy with respect to their own reproductive systems as long as they do not breach the autonomy of others. (Head)
The issue of abortion is one of the most controversial topics of our time, but recently the amount of public interest has grown exponentially. A number of bills regarding this policy issue such as Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015 and Child Interstate Notification Act have both greatly influenced the public’s opinion of abortion. Although, the issue of abortion hasn’t always been like this; according to Timeline of Abortion Laws and Events, an article from the Chicago Tribune, “The earliest anti-abortion laws were intended to protect women from untrained abortionists.” (Timeline) Since the 1973 passing of the Supreme Court Case, Roe V Wade, women have been able to obtain the abortion procedure in all 50 states, 46 of which were
Abortion is a subject that numerous people have strong opinions about; some believe that it is a form of murder and should be banned, yet others believe that the decision should be for the woman herself to make. In my eyes, the choice to abort or not abort is the woman’s, not the public’s. However, many men disagree with pro-choice.
Roe vs. Wade case was a ground-breaking landmark case because it gave a woman the right to choose. Since then landmark cases and legislation restricted a woman from having an abortion. The rights of the unborn are the reason why a woman's rights to have an abortion are being eroded. In addition, violent events have occurred because a woman has a right to have an abortion. Clearly, this topic has affected the political, health, social, and religious, aspects of our society. Currently, women are choosing not to have an abortion. The sentiment is so strong that a Harris poll showed that 72% of Americans say abortion should be illegal after the first 3 months of pregnancy. To make this point, abortion rates are down in the states where the abortion
Abortion is a very controversial topic in today’s society. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks (Abortion). Many people have issues regarding this topic, while some support the idea. This paper will be covering the pros and cons, people’s attitudes, and how a researcher could possible change your perspective on the topic at hand.
Abortion: the controversy-packed topic that can provoke the most vicious altercations between the two opposing sides. The views of abortion divide into two main categories: pro-choice and pro-life. These groups can go at eachother’s throats with no end, constantly throwing new arguments at each other. Many people feel very strongly one way on the topic, and are some individuals too stubborn to consider anything other opinion. The two opposite views seem to boil down to many as either the undeveloped fetus is innocent or the mother has the right to chose what to do with her own body.
I hold the belief that a woman should have the right to have an abortion if that is what she would like. This means I identify as a pro-choice supporter. If the government ever decide to illegalize abortion, it would mean that women do not 'own' their body and instead the lawmakers do. As soon as a third party, such as lawmakers, are given the power to decide that abortions are wrong and they decide to ban abortions, women are no longer in control of their own bodies which makes them powerless.
The debate about pro-life and pro-choice between abortions will always be around, but finding informative information will educate and help anyone trying to research this topic. “American Choose “Pro-Choice” for First Time in Seven Years” by Lydia Saad reports how pro-choice is increasing throughout the past couple years as well as providing details about where United States citizens stand on the abortion issue. “The Politics of Abortions Will Get More Complicated in 2017” by Elizabeth Stoker Bruenig covers pro-life activists plus the legal battles abortions laws are going through. “American Choose “Pro-Choice” for First Time in Seven Years” is more dependable because of the evidence, authority, and purpose.
During Roe v. Wade the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 votes in favor of it being the women’s decision to abort under the 14th Amendment. This was an enormous step towards women’s control over their parental right. According to the American Journal of Public Health, after Roe provisions moved from hospitals to non-hospitals clinics. This saw the percentage of abortions performed at non-hospital clinics rise “from 51% in early 1974 to 61% in 1976 and reached 95% in 2008” (Aksel, Fein, Kettener, Young & Backus, 2013). Many argued that women were no longer going to the black market for abortions but rather seeking professional help at safe places. This decision was a huge victory for the Pro-Choice movement. The Pro-Choice movement supports the statement that it should be up to the mother to decided whether to have an abortion or not.
Abortion is one of the most controversial topics and many argue that it's wrong, but I disagree, I am a strong supporter of abortions. An abortion is when a woman deliberately terminates a pregnancy, there are many medical methods used to perform an abortion. The techniques used for abortion have changed drastically over time and many cultures developed their own forms of abortions. Originally abortions were unregulated and many women performed abortions on themselves at home, which were very unsafe and many at home abortions resulted in injury or death. The two main methods of abortion as of right now are surgical and medical abortion, these are much safer than previous methods and rarely inflict any harm onto the woman. The surgical method is performed using a vacuum like device to empty the uterus of its content. The medical abortion can only be used early in a pregnancy and requires a woman to take a prescribed pill for the first seven weeks of her pregnancy.
A recent medical ethical controversy that resurfaces every few years is the debate of abortion. The Roe v. Wade US Supreme Court decision in 1973 made a significant change to abortion laws, giving women the choice to terminate pregnancy without requiring eminent health risks to the mother. (n.d., 2015) The ethical debate of abortion continues even with the practice being legal.
Of course when making any decision it is important to critically think out the whole situation. It is very important to not make irrational decisions. In order to help make the best decision the pros and cons should be taken into consideration. The pros of having an abortion could be but not limited to, being unable to financially afford a child. There may be health risk for the woman so an abortion may save a life. The pregnancy may have been a result of violent crime or assault. “The 'Hyde Amendment' refers to an amendment first offered by Rep. Henry J. Hyde in 1976 to the Departments of Labor and Health, Education, and Welfare, Appropriation Act, 1977. The amendment restricted the use of appropriated funds to pay
Roe v Wade was a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court which guarantees autonomic rights to females. Without it, the health and safety of women within the United States would have been severely compromised. This Supreme Court decision determined the fate for women seeking abortions and protected future physicians from being prosecuted when an abortion is performed within the state’s guidelines. Although there is much division on abortion and its availability, women have been provided a safe and private environment, where every option may be considered concerning their pregnancy. Those who have supported and fought for the fundamentals of Roe v Wade have helped to, “...dissipate
This paper will explore the number of abortions being performed, why they are being performed and, also should it remain legal to have an abortion? In 2013 over 664,000 legal abortions was reported to the CDC from 49 different areas. In 2013 the abortion ratio was 12.5 per 1000 women. (Abortion Surveilence 2013, n.d.) In 2013 health research funding reported that lest than 1% of these abortions were due to rape or incest. Now if we just sit back and look at these numbers they are astounding. That is 664,000 lives took with someone else deciding their life.
The rights of women have been debated time and time again, regardless of the fact that women are indeed people and should have as many rights as men currently do. The topics of numerous aspects regarding women and their health, personal choices, and even their own bodies are still being debated today. Men still have a higher pay than women for doing the same job. Despite the popular belief, women being able to vote did not mean that they were treated as equals in the working field, at home, or everyday living and this is still an ongoing debate.
