Written Assignment I am going to take the position of For GMOs for Africa. I think that GMOs could benefit the African continent exponentially. With their extreme expected increase in population and decrease in yield from their current crops there has to be an alternate solution. According to the Genetic Literacy Project, “Without a sharp increase in food production, Africa faces a future of increased malnutrition and reliance on food imports to feed it’s growing population. (Cerier, 2017)”. With the crops being insect resistant as well as some are fortified with different proteins and vitamins the GM crops have the potential to cut down malnutrition by a significant margin if the techniques can be universally adopted. Although commercialization is good in some instances because it can create commerce and give a slight boost to the economy. The idea that it might be commercialized also opens the possibility that foreign entities can come in and start redirecting those crops from their initial purpose. Instead of providing the security that the continent desperately needs it can become another system abused for greed. Some scientist have brought up the concerns of some potential long term effects of the GMOs. In an article in the Washington Post stated, “The idea that GMOs are actively dangerous has taken hold to such an extent that one Ugandan scientist told me she heard a colleague – also a scientist – explain to farmers that genetically modified corn would make men sterile (Haspel, 2015).” Now it’s hard to say whether that scientist was speaking based on any actual factor or if they were fear mongering, however if it is true that’s definitely a very negative outcome of GMOs, which are supposed to be put in place to help starving

Other GMOs can also promote use of no-till farming, which keeps more moisture in the soil. No-till also enables farmers to make fewer passes through the field using machinery, which means less fuel used and greenhouse gases emitted.”(Monsanto) GMOs are useful for helping with planting crops in any area of the world.
There are many benefits to GMO’s with global population rising it is great to have food that can resist weeds, pests and other diseases. Farmers can also benefit from the modified foods. A GMO is a genetically modified organism that goes through the process of genetic engineering. This is when genes of one organism are extracted, altered, and then artificially placed into another organism to then grow. We typically see GMOs in the food we consume every day. These foods include fruits and vegetables, however the most common organisms that are genetically engineered include, corn, soy, and cotton. It is ultimately the unnatural cross breeding of plants, animals, bacteria, and virus genes (Non-GMO Project). But now why is there a debate for placing a label to notify consumers of GMOs in their foods? Do we know the potential harm that GMOs can cause? We have the right to know what we are putting into our bodies and what is found in our everyday foods.

Farmers and researchers in the agricultural world claim no harm can be done by them. Many will argue that Genetically Modified Organisms(GMOs) are not safe for human consumption, however they are almost inevitable for our everyday food consumption. The issue of genetically modified foods, is Farmers can't harvest seeds. Fundamentally, farming is a simple process: plant seeds, grow crops, harvest crops, and gather seeds from the plants for the next season. Sadly, GMO companies like Monsanto take this last step away from farmers and raise expenses even futher by forcing the farmers to continually buy the premium-priced GM eeds every growing season. In fact, as was shiwn in the Bowman v. Monsanto court case, it is illegal in the US for someone growing a Monsanto crop to harvest the seeds and use them later. The Nowman case went all the way to the unanimously found guilty of patent infringement after he purchased and used second generation Monsanto seeds.

Because of this, many large countries such as Japan have put bans on GMO containing foods. GM foods are not labeled in the US and other countries so consumers are not monitored for health conditions that may result from long term use. Some reports have also linked GMO to possible cancers. In addition to the health effects, GMO crop technology can affect smaller farmers and our environment. GM crops are too expensive for the smaller farmers to grow, forcing the smaller farms into debt or off their land. The main proponent to use gmos was to increase food production to feed the world's impoverished and to use less pesticides in farming. Gmos have not achieved any of its goals as world hungry still exist and pesticide use continues to be used at the same rate. The heavy use of pesticides is not good for the earth people or other life forms that come into contact with them. They are polluting our water and land and if we continue to use them heavily we will make our land infertile. Just off of these facts I believe the use of gmos should be reduced as we are fighting fire with fire. GMOs are beneficial in many ways. GMOs are great for poor people to buy and grow. GMOs are safe and people have been eating them for a long time. Also these genetically modified foods are safe from pests and diseases that can make people or animals very sick. GMOs are beneficial for lot’s of people.
While these are valid concerns, they are entirely wrong. According to the World Health Organization in 2005, “GM foods currently traded on the international market have passed risk assessments in several countries and are not likely to present risks for human health” (Novella). Many of those who are anti-GMO claim that GMOs are not safe because they do not know enough about them or they have heard far too many conflicting reports. While there are many reports that claim that GMOs are detrimental to the environment, the three agencies that oversee GM crops, the FDA, USDA, and EDA, have ruled that these crops do not pose any real threat. Since the beginning of the GM crop in 1996, there have been 2,497 approvals of the safety of GMOs in the environment and 1,129 of these approvals have been for the food safety of the products (Monsanto).
