The NRA argues that the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees individuals the right to own and carry guns.   They are concerned that federal regulations will continue to increase until owning a handgun will be difficult to achieve, infringing on their Constitutional rights.   They also argue that if law-abiding citizens have guns, they are safer from criminals, bringing crime rates down.

Eighty-nine people depart from this earth due to gun violence in the US every day. From school children, to victims of domestic violence, to people going about their daily lives, this status quo is unacceptable. On Tuesday January 5th, 2016 President Obama announced that he would send proposals on reducing gun violence in America to Congress. His spokesman, Jay Carney, mentioned that this is “a complex problem that will require a complex solution.” The ability to own a gun is considered by some a birthright of Americans. However, with crime rates involving handguns rising each day it has become quite clear. Handgun laws must become stricter in order to reduce homicide and crime. The question is, “which solution in most effective in decreasing gun violence?” Gun control is a major conflict that is constantly reoccurring and the US is seemingly divided over it.

The National Rifle Association is a very historic and well known organization which was founded in 1871. The NRA is widely known for protecting the second amendment of the constitution which is what gives people the right to keep and bear arms and very strong promoters of proper gun use. Sarah Horwitz, state’s that, “Today it is arguably the most powerful lobbying organization in the nation’s capital and certainly the most feared.”(Achenbach, Joel, Scott Higham, and Sari Horwitz) What makes the National Rifle Association so strong of an interest group is how they do not shy away from controversy on gun control which is also why their number of group members is so large and continues to grow year after year.

A common viewpoint across the country is to have stricter gun control around put into place. Stricter gun control brings the value of safety to mind. If guns that are used to carry out the mass shootings are taken away, then overall people will feel safer due to the assault weaponry being taken away from psychopath’s access to them. Take the Orlando night club shooting in 2016, which was the deadliest shooting in United States history at the time, for example: during the month that the shooting took place, requests for background checks by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) reached a monthly high; However private gun sales and sales made at gun shows do not require background checks, the number of background checks could underestimate the number of guns sold (Stroebe). If every gun sale that was made had a proper background check then the number of guns sold would see a decrease. James Hodgkinson was a 66-year-old with a history of alleged violence against women, he opened fire in Washington at Republican lawmakers; his only reason for opening fire was because he voted for Bernie Sanders and disliked Donald Trump (Daniel Dale Toronto). Decreasing the number of guns sold to people not mentally and/or physically capable of handling them would make the general population safer incase the incapable person had an outbreak at used the gun to harm someone and/or themselves. It would eliminate the people like Hodkinson who are using guns purely for hate crimes, and who have a history of violence.

Compared to other countries, the U.S.A. accounts for more than 30% of mass shootings worldwide. By itself this statistic would be incredibly alarming, and paired with the fact that the U.S. contains only 5% of the world’s population it is absolutely terrifying (Gallagher 2). Part of the reason that mass attacks are so prevalent may be the readily accessible supply if firearms. This fact brings one to the logical conclusion that gun control is a policy that our representatives in the government need to consider thoroughly. While i do understand that this idea is even harder to accomplish in practice than it is to comprehend in theory, it is a direly needed first step to making our country a safer place to live.

Mass shootings have become a grim occurrence that seem to happen more frequently, no matter what repercussions they have. From the club shooting in Orlando to the violent attacks on students in schools, these events have unfortunately transpired repeatedly over the recent decades, with no end in sight. Most will say the government isn’t doing enough, but the likelihood that they will reject funding from the National Rifle Association (NRA) or amend Americans’ right to bear arms is so miniscule it is almost pointless to argue, however there may be a more plausible alternative. Congress and the President have the power to intensify the background checks and exams that citizens must undergo in order to purchase these weapons. More thorough criminal and mental examinations may prevents felons from obtaining these weapons of war, or could lead to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as depression or schizophrenia.

There is a huge epidemic that is taking place in the United States and our government has to put a stop to it. This issue is the mass shootings that take place in America. There has been numerous amount of mass shootings in the United States and many of them could have simply been avoided if there were stricter gun laws. This last decade has made Gun Control an unavoidable topic in society for Americas citizens and politicians. Our politicians must take a stand against these senseless crimes and ban these pointless weapons once and for all.

The United States Gun laws need to be actively strengthened to protect and prevent harm against citizens by creating more thorough background checks, mental health checks, and more licenses specifically for different types of assault weapons. Several mass shootings have been caused by legally purchased guns caused by background checks without intensive research. With stricter gun laws harm and massive tragedies would be prevented or have more protection and safety. New laws and mandates would change the environment of gun safety and protection.

The NRA is a lobbying group that is trying to promote gun safety, organized firearm activities, and most of all protection of the second amendment. Supporters of the NRA are loyal to the cause and rightfully so. The organization promotes family dinners, organizational competitions and updates on their fight to keep our second amendment from being repealed. I think that the NRA is a positive thing, even if the majority of there supporters believe their guns will be confiscated if democrats are elected into office. There are numerous groups who oppose the NRA and promote stricter rules on gun control, and some more extreme groups want citizens to not be able to own firearms at all.
