Special education consists of many facets that people can be categorized under. It is not a definite process and there are many things that one must to take into consideration before it can be declared that any person should receive special needs services. Things such as intelligence and adaptive behavior are two things to take into consideration when trying to determine if a student qualifies for special needs services in the school system. When one speaks of intelligence, it is easy to assume that it is a reference to how smart an individual is. For students that may have intellectual disabilities, intelligence takes on a different meaning because in this case, one would be looking to see if the student is learning at the average pace of …show more content…
She has her masters in special education, a member of the SPED team, and teaches the self-contained class with students in grade three through grade five. When referring to the problems associated with assessing students with intellectual disabilities, there are several things to take into account. First, the student must receive an evaluation to determine if the student has any disabilities that would require special education services. Teachers can also decide to use the process called RTI, which stands for Responsive to Intervention. RTI is a tiered process that helps determine if a student will need to be evaluated for special education services, it has different levels that the student and teacher or designated person must complete in order to help determine if they need special education services. During this process they use different strategies for a certain period of time to offer help to the students in their weak areas, to see if any improvement has been made and if this process is not successful, then they are able to move forward with the evaluation. Parents also have the right to ask that their child be evaluated, and if they do qualify for special education services, the student that is receiving special education services will be re-evaluated every three years …show more content…
Students with intellectual disabilities are people that want the same out of life as children that do not have any. Their IEPs must be specific and to punctual so that one would know what goals have been set and the strategies that have been put in place to get the student moving towards the goals that have been planned out. That is why it is imperative to make note of all of the difficulties that the student may have so that we can get accurate results from the assessments as well as be patient enough with the student so that they may be at ease and do the best that they are capable of
The IEP is created by a group of individuals who play an important role in the student’s success. Those that should be involved in the creation of the IEP are the parents of the students, at least one regular education teacher of the student, at least one special education teacher, a representative of the LEA who is able to supervise the plans, someone who is able to interpret evaluation results (may be someone already on the team), any other person who has knowledge about the student, and whenever possible, the student with the disability (Gibb & Dyches, 2016). The evaluation results will be used to decide the child’s eligibility for special education and related services and to make decisions about an appropriate educational program for the child. Once the student is tested and determined eligible for services the IEP must be written.
First, Rather than focusing on the child's learning deficiencies, emphasize and reward the child’s strengths and encourage them to find new interest and hobbies. Second it is important to meet with the child's teachers, tutors, and school support personnel to understand performance levels, and attitude toward school. After the student has been evaluated they are now eligible for special education services. Special education services are provided to student to work with a team of professionals, including your child's teacher, to develop an Individualized Education Program. The individualized education program is created to provide a summary of child’s current education and future goals within education. Children with learning disabilities need to know that they are loved and that they are not dumb. They need to know that they are intelligent normal people who just have trouble learning because their mind process words and information differently. Students with learning disabilities are just like every other student they just need more focus on certain learning
When it comes to education, special education is a much needed service for students with disabilities. In order for students with disabilities to succeed in life, it is imperative to expose them to as many educational tools as possible. Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), 2004 solidified equal education opportunities for persons with disabilities. Researchers Diliberto and Brewer (2014) indicated that working together as a team to develop an effective IEP ensures academic success for students with disabilities. So, how important is an IEP? According to Diliberto and Brewer (2014) the IEP is the major key to planning the student’s instruction and provides an intervention to their educational needs. Diliberto and Brewer developed six tips that would assist an educator with having a successful IEP meeting.
One primary and essential thing to remember when discussing the student’s learning during any meeting or situation is to keep the focus on the child’s need, not on the expectations of parents or district. When having an IEP meeting or any other meeting I believe as teachers we need to be prepared with results of the child’s development, research, articles and other material that would help us be educated about the child’s disability. Being prepared will also allow the teacher to feel comfortable to discuss new objectives, plans, and to talk in the right terminology. Along with being prepared it’s important to share any information gathered to the other members so we can all understand the needs of the student, which is the primary focus. Something
This week we read about assessments and different ways to evaluate and target the specific needs of the students that have intellectual disabilities. An educational plan created by the educational team provides strategies and accommodations to help move the student forward.
The IEP document must include a statement of the student’s present levels of academic achievement and function. This statement should include how the student’s disability affects their present levels of participation and development they are presently making in the general education curriculum.
Assessment is a regular occurrence in any classroom because it is used to monitor progress of the student and teacher by seeing how well the student understands the content and/or if the given intervention that was given to the student is improving the student’s learning; the latter involves the Response to Intervention model. These results is a key component when determining students’ placement in Special or General Education settings. Educational laws have emphasized an increased focus on assessment of all student comparatively to assess where every student is academically. This flux of students in Special Education has led to a disproportion and overrepresentation of cultural groups. This lead to assessment measures to
Special education is a tool to individualize instruction for children whose needs are different in many ways from the needs of other children. Individualization requires individualized placement decisions. It is not reasonable to expect most general education teachers to provide individualized instruction to special education students. What non instructional supports have you implemented to ensure your students have meaningful participation?
For a student to get into special education there are several tests that have to be performed, one example of the tests that are performed is a hearing test, another example of the tests that are performed is an eye sight test for the test to be performed a regular education teacher has to determine that the child has a problem. After the teacher determines that a problem does exist the school nurses starts the process of testing vision, hearing, and a speech pathologist also test the student to see if the student possibly has a speech impairment. After the tests are completed and the tests results are provided a special group called Admissions and Release Committee (ARC) made up of a chairperson usually the principal, at least one special
During the interview process, I went over several questions pertaining to students with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) in a classroom setting. I had interviewed Ms. Chisolm (Special Education Teacher) for the Jersey City Public Schools District, who works with students of multiple disabilities. Intelligence disabilities (ID) mean the mental capabilities of a child’s knowledge and skills. Intellectual disability can be developed during childbirth or before the age of eighteen. It is imperative for me to know, “What are the characteristics of students with intellectual disabilities? Ms. Chisolm explained that students with ID have certain limitations which are below- average intelligence level, lacking mental and physical and adaptive skills, and social skills. Actually, students with ID have difficult learning disabilities such as short-term memory, attention hyper- active deficit disorder, down- syndrome disorder and speech impairment. Children with ID have a lower IQ rate due to their disabilities.
As previously learned in the 2006 Federal Regulations, it states “states must adopt a criterion for determining if a student has a disability”. RTI can be used to early identification for at risk students with academic or behavioral problems. RTI should be used in conjunction with other measures when determining a SLD classification. The data gather from RTI can be useful to SLD determinations. RTI has standard protocol and a problem solving approach. The standard protocol approach is for all students, has evidence
Special Education programs are designed for certain students who are born with certain disabilities such as mental, physical, social, and sometimes have an emotional delay. These issues are normally found in once the child once he or she is born. As a parent, you are beyond thrilled of the new born blessing, that even if the child is born with a disability, the parent would love on he or she, just as if he or she had no disability. Once a child is born with a disability the parent goes the extra mile and beyond to ensure their child is getting the best help towards the child’s overall development. Children with disabilities cannot be met within the traditional classroom environment. There are special education programs statewide in each school to assist students with disabilities. Majority of the special education programs deals with the child’s cognitive and physical development, and scholastic skills. Children with special needs come from all different types of households. There are some kids who parents get the best help for their child overall development, while they are other parents who send s their child to school and letting the administrative of the school deals with the child. Although these services are free at no expense to the parents, some parents feel it’s the school job to assist their children with placing their child in special education programs. Another reason parents might lack in the child disability problem is because they also have a disability.
Education in American is easily one of the most important things in America. Students of today are America’s future, and educating them is extremely important. All students are not the same, many students need special needs and giving them the equal opportunity as students who do not need special education can help all students receive the education they need and deserve. We can see that education for special need students is often overlooked and they do not gain the same knowledge as their fellow students.
The definition of special education is a specialized area of education which uses unique instructional methods, materials, learning aids, and the equipment to meet the educational needs of children with learning disabilities. Students are given an opportunity to learn material in a way that they can understand, meeting the needs of their disability. To teach a student with special needs the teacher must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree and then they can join a course on Special Education.
Special Education or Remedial Education is a program designed to help children who have learning disabilities and mental challenges. Special Education can be very beneficial for certain students; however, because of the diversity within a Special Education classroom students are rarely getting the correct level of education that they need. Most students do not end up not getting the specialized help they need and eventually fall through the cracks. This, along with many other problems, need to fixed. If these very serious issues within the system are not handled, then the Special Education system will fail.
