On February 19th, 2014, a video of Ray Rice, the running back of the Baltimore Ravens, was released in which he was seen dragging the body of his limp fiancee out of a casino elevator. After being arrested and spending a year in a pretrial intervention program, Ray Rice was suspended for only 2 games. However, shortly after this, the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, changed the domestic violence policy of the NFL, making it so that first time offenders would receive a 6 game suspension, and second time offenders would be banned for life. Then, on September 9th, another video was released of Rice punching his fiancee in the head and knocking her unconscious. In response to this, the Ravens terminated Rice’s contract and the NFL suspended him …show more content…
Even after the second video was released, that was still not enough to have him banned for life. Myself, personally, don’t understand how this act was not enough to be banned from the NFL. Ray Rice had set a terrible example for all his young fans, the NFL, and men in general, yet he was still not banned from the NFL. Professional athletes who break the law, in addition to jail time should be banned from their sport. They should be banned because they are role models to young athletes everywhere, there is no consistency within the leagues when it comes to suspending an athlete, and most professional athletes make enough money to pay their own bail, defeating the purpose of the punishment.
Professional athletes who break the law, in addition to jail time, should be banned from their sport because they are role models to athletes everywhere. Professional athletes set examples for every athlete out there, this ranges between elementary and college students. We all look up to these athletes and follow their lead in hopes to accomplish all that they have one day. With that in mind, there is also many negative sides to this. When a professional athlete breaks the law, that negative example is now

There has been cases where athletes can several games after they have broken the law, while others get caught on the spot. For example, The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced in 2010 that, “New York Yankees Minor League pitcher Amauri Sanit has been suspended for 50 games after testing positive for Mephentermine, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Sanit, a Cuban defector, has gone 1-2 with an 8.69 ERA over 12 games” (hhhvgh). This quote proves that, in this particular case, the player went several games without being punished by the league. In another account, the author explains a player’s case, “Tinordi has been suspended 20 games without pay for violating the terms of the NHL and NHL Players' Association joint performance enhancing substances” (Hamilton 52). This quote shows that these two players had different amount of games suspended, yet they did the same thing. This proves the point that professional athletes should be banned from their sport if they commit a crime because they can go several games without punishment, which is unfair to the players that follow the rules, and since there is no consistency of punishments, being banned creates a sense of
When Ray Rice’s video went viral, it caused all of us to examine what this is really all about. It's given visibility to a problem that's been there for a long time. The NFL has a strict new policy in dealing with domestic-violence offenders, college football coaches are being held publicly accountable when they allow domestic abusers to remain on their teams, and sports as a whole has helped bring America's dirty little secret out into the public mainstream. No, there wasn't justice in the Rice case, but we did gain a tremendous amount of consciousness from
Rice was released by the Ravens and indefinitely suspended by the NFL on Sept. 8 of last year. Rice was ordered to serve his suspension in full, and complete therapy and training in domestic abuse education groups in order to be reinstated, which he has completed successfully.
Millions of kids watch NFL games. They also follow them outside of playing football. NFL players should remember that children hold these players to a higher standard. For instance, “Janay Rice sat next to her husband during the press conference, though simple assault charges against her were eventually dropped. Footage from the night showed Rice dragging his wife's unconscious body from an elevator” (Craggs). Ray Rice is a popular player in the NFL, with millions of fans. Hearing the news, I found it to be extremely disappointing. Ray Rice had too much to drink that night, and in the elevator he punched his wife, Janay, in the face multiple times and knocked her out. The NFL fined Ray Rice millions of dollars, he lost his job and endorsements. Other than losing money, he lost his fan base, including kids who looked up to him as an amazing running back.
In the article”NFL Apologize to Women for Ray Rice” Roxanne Jones who was the former Vice President of the NFL and national lecturer on sports , is trying to convince others that the domestic violence act Ray Rice committed against his former fiancé Janay Palmer was a more severe act than he was held accountable for. She is addressing an argument to Roger Goodell , the NFL commissioner ,that Rices’ suspension from playing football should have been longer than just two games. Jones believes the suspension what unjustified because Rice was seen on camera dragging Palmer who was unconscious at the time out of a casino elevator. Jones compares this domestic violence act to an animal abuse crime, which occurred
The incident with Ray Rice and Janay Palmer was the most talk about news in sports history. Ray Rice was charged with aggravated assault against his then fiancé for punching her in the face in an elevator at an Atlantic City casino. Rice was saw punching his now wife, Janay Rice, in the face, spitting on her then dragging her limp body out of an elevator, which was all seen on tape where the charges were later dismissed. Rice married Palmer six weeks after the incident on March 28, 2014. For the incident, Rice was suspended for the first two games
The NFL player Ray Rice committed one of the worst crimes in the United States, domestic violence. The situation started with the player arguing with his wife, Janay, in a casino, than continued the argument in an elevator where he hit his wife knocking her to the ground and leaving her unconscious. Unfortunately for Ray he was videotaped and got shared to the police and NFL. He was than charged of domestic violence and suspended of the NFL for 2 games but later again another video was shared in the internet and that caused him his complete suspension from the NFL.
The problem the NFL runs into when they change Ray’s suspension from two games to indefinitely, is that the only thing that had changed was the release of the videos from TMZ. The charges and the statements gathered by police all remain the same. The NFL’s policy was two game suspension for first time offenders, and Ray only having this one incident qualified him for that two game suspension. Ray was outraged by this, and immediately started fighting his new punishment. In the meantime the NFL on damage control, changes there domestic violence policy to first time
In February 2012, Ray Rice, a former Baltimore Ravens running back, and his fiancée, Janae Palmer, were arrested for assault charges after they had gotten into a fight at a casino in Atlantic City. A few weeks after their arrest, a video surfaced of Rice dragging Palmer out of an elevator by her shoulders. Police later stated they had video footage of Rice knocking Palmer unconscious prior to dragging her off the elevator. By late March, Rice had been indicted for third degree aggravated assault. (Elliott, 2014). With a popular NFL player under fire, this case received ample media coverage. After the NFL announced their decision to only suspend Rice for the first 2 games of the season following his indictment, the decision was discussed on ESPN’s morning sports talk show, First Take.
Footage was later released by TMZ of Rice half-dragging, half-lifting Palmer’s body from the elevator, having been seemingly knocked unconscious. After being indicted in March for aggravated assault and entering a pre-trial anger management program in May, Ray and his now wife Janay Rice hold a news conference during which they apologize for their equal roles in the incident. By this time, the NFL had still not gotten involved in the case, and when Rice finally meets with Commissioner Goodell, the final punishment comes as a mere two-game suspension. With the story thought to be over, more footage of Rice visibly striking his wife in the face and knocking her unconscious surfaces, thanks again to TMZ. This sparks another round of events in the case, with Rice abruptly being released by the Baltimore Ravens and indefinitely suspended from the NFL in September. Rice enters the appeal process against his suspension, the major point being that he fully disclosed the nature and order of events to Goodell and other important parties. His appeal lasts into late November, when he is reinstated into the NFL and made able to join another team.
Once everyone saw the video, they were outraged at the NFL because they believed that Rice’s punishment should be worse. Once the NFL saw the videos, they changed the punishment. He was released from the Ravens and suspended from the league. Rice was charged with a felony. He went to a pretrial intervention program that allowed him to get out of jail.
Athletes that use steroids are at a high risk of getting caught and suspended. Use of steroids in many sports are illegal but athletes do not always get caught. Congress should pass a law that all professional sports should be testing athletes for Performance Enhancing Drugs.
In the world of sports it is a competitive place where athletes lay everything they have worked for their whole lives to win the game. Now these athletes have been striving for greatness and dedicating so much of their lives to getting bigger faster and stronger to be able to win some games and ultimately move up in their careers and possibly make a living out of the sport they love to play. Sports rewards players who are motivated and works harder than the other team and stay focused and just dedicate so much to the sport. Now there are shortcuts to becoming bigger and faster and stronger. While some athletes bleed sweat and work as hard as they can and sometimes get changes slowly and far between some athletes will take performance enhancing drugs which will help these athletes take a shortcut and beat out the others who strive to get better. There in my opinion is nothing wrong with athletes wanting to get an upper edge on opponents by getting bigger and stronger but when the athlete uses performance enhancing drugs to get an upper edge I do not agree with this and feel like those athletes should receive some type of punishment.
many get away with it. All athletes should be treated the same way when getting caught
Should athletes who dope have awards stripped from them? The answer is yes! Just as Usain Bolt said it sends the wrong message to our younger generation. Anyone in their right mind would have to agree. Drug abuse is already not a good thing we want to promote, especially when the abuse is to gain unfair advantages in winning. If the athlete was so great then why did they have to use steroids to begin with? The answer is they weren't good enough to win without help, so why should they keep a trophy that they don’t deserve? Four time NBA all-star Lebron James had to sit out of some high school basketball games his senior year because evidence suggested that he was excepting gifts from sponsors that were well over a 100 dollars. He was upset and served his punishment, but the moral was that he learned his lesson and that league officials were unbiased stating that superstar athletes are NOT above the rules. The point made in this is that if high school and college athletes have things taken from them for something as minor as excepting a gift, then why should grown man not have awards taken from them?
Doping in sports, or the use of performance-enhancing drugs, should be a lifetime ban for an athlete because doping provides an unfair advantage, a variety of health risks, and gives a bad influence among young athletes just starting to play the
