Introductory Paragraph: Typically when students are in elementary and middle school, parents tend to be involved: attending parent-teacher conferences, sitting them down for homework before they go outside to play, and punishing them when they get a bad report from their teacher at the end of the school day. However, when students transition to high school, parents tend to be less involved, but still expect the same outcome: As and Bs. Generally when students do not meet the expectations, parents punish the child by taking away privileges and/or possessions and students are left alone to accomplish the same expectation for next time. After a parent receives a bad report card from their high school student, they should investigate the root of the problem, identify solutions to prevent another bad report card, and monitor the student’s progress.
Main Idea #2/ Body Paragraph: After students bring home bad report cards and parents find the root of the problem, parents should then identify solutions to prevent another bad report card. If, for example, students are sitting near and talking to close friends in class, parents should request that the student is moved away from the friend, which could prevent the student from losing concentration during class. However, some problems are not as easily fixed. If students simply do not get the material, parents and students should arrange a homework schedule that is suitable for both of them or get a tutor that is fitting for the
This audience is typically heads of household that would have children in schools and would generally relate to the high school experiences discussed throughout this article. As Botstein pointed out, “Often the high school outsider becomes the more successful and admired adult.” These successful adults can see the viewpoint of the author through their own lenses and also realize that their success was not directly tied to the learning they gained in school but to the harsh realities they faced once they moved into adulthood. Although Botstein highlights the various problems faced by students in high school but to effect change he needs to gain the support of the parents, in addition to wealth. The only way to effect change in the American school system is to be driven by both the student’s parents and the individuals that can influence the school board.
Next, When students fail in school, teachers don’t bother to care nor to help because it was the student's decision to fail, although having parents jump in to the students problems; no matter what they will always support because the parents want the best out of him/her student. Also, parents look out for their child in the education challenges that gets to them. For example, Karther, Diane E. Lowden, Frances Y states,”Despite their own low school achievement, many parents value education, believing it to be a pathway to success for their children”(41). Parents are good reason why student tend to succeed in school after getting in the way of struggling by failing a class. One good reason that students will tend to focus in school and get a good passing grade is getting told by parents at home to do homework if not value electronics gets taken away. Teachers have limited control of students lives, so
In high school, a parent has to be aware of everything that goes on with their child's life. Then their child grows up and blossoms into an adult that continues their education into college. There in college the parents of these blossoms are no longer as aware of what goes on with their school life. These parents have little control over what goes on academically and socially while their adult children are in college. In the article, “College Kids Have Too Much Privacy” Michele Willins shows us that parents have a right to know what is going on with their children’s college life.
In ‘Abolish high school’ by Rebecca solnit, she writes “High school is often considered a definitive American experience, in two senses: an experience that nearly everyone shares, and one that can define who you are, for better or worse, for the rest of your life.” which means high school isn’t wonderful for many people, it has a lot of challenges for teens, maybe some of them ‘kill’ by pressure and challenges, it would affect their rest of life. The high school is not a wonderful place for everyone. People should skip it and escaped it that you would don’t be suffered by it. However I disagree with her, because I believe high school is a indispensable place for students. It is a place for students, they can find a great relationship and an unexceptionable place to learn. On the other hand, I believe the high school is the key to definitive teens who they are in an great way. For example, Teachers would shape everyone’s identity, make you strong to face challenges, and open child’s heart. For example, in my childhood, when I lived with my parents, I was happy to learn, because my parents always encourage me to learn. Also, they want me learn from mistake, because It is a way to learn. They want me to be someone. However my parents left me at 12 age, they have to work more hard to support this home. I can’t focus on learning, I was playing video games every day, because I think I was ‘release’ from my parents. I have no ideas about my future. There is no one like my parents to guide me , I feel alone and confuses. Until I was be a part of high school. The high school make me stronger and hopeful. Teachers guide me walk on the right way again, they talk to me about future and how wonderful thing would happen in high school. I
It is said that “Most families want to know what is going on in the school and would do a better job of parenting and educating if they knew how.” (MORRISON, 2009, p. 491)
Also, there was a provision that stated if the school was performing poorly for two straight years; the parents have an option of transferring their child to a better performing school. Family involvement is being informed of the curriculum with description which is understandable, and also mandated report cards and parent-teacher conference.
Dr. Debra Koss ( child psychiatrist) believes that in our society today teens and parents face more stress and pressures than ever before. When a student acts up the first thought should not be punishment but what is going wrong in this young one’s life and how can it be helped. In Fund du Lac High School three hundred fifty-eight freshman out of six hundred thirty-two participated in mental health screening and sixty-four percent of the students tested were diagnosed with a mental illness. Many factors are contributing to this bad school environment ranging from overworked students, students ridiculing other students and faculty that genuinely do not care about the students. A teacher, who does not take interest in the students and does not do their best to make sure their students succeed, risks destroying their students confidence. 8,300 students drop out on a average day. These students say they drop because they don't feel safe, they can't keep up, they couldn't attend everyday or they did not have the confidence they would finish the class. Students everyday are either dropping out or hurting themselves because of the events that happen inside these school buildings. Forty percent of parents say children experience the most stress from academics. Chronic stress causes a sense of panic which causes more stress. “Despite whatever is going on -if you are a bit depressed, stressed, or overwhelmed you want to put up this positive
parents are treated harshly by their peers when the truth of the matter is less so.
Pickhardt states that in some cases the middle school teachers give parents the wrong message. This message is to let the student not do the work and fail as they will learn more from their consequences. Pickhardt explains how most of these students need to learn from the academic failure and letting them fail would mean that there would be a lack of effort in wanting to do work. Here parents can help the students by giving them support to continue giving the most academic work that can be done. Sixth grade students don’t get the attention that they
The parent is there for every subject not being left out on any homework due. The teacher was wrong to presume she knew what was best for his
Mr. Willow should have kept the situation private and not have shared the situation before Russell’s class period. Also, Mr. Willow should not have called Russell out in front of classmates. The class should be made aware that someone in the class had cheated and of the consequences that the student will face, but the conversation with Russell should have been kept private. In the future, Mr. Willow should keep the situation private until he has had a private conversation with the student. Next, Mr. Willow should let the class know that someone had cheated and the students should be told the consequences for cheating. Mr. Willow should change up his assignments every year. In a survey taken, students reported
The next school to present was Floyd C. Fretz Middle School by their principles Mrs. Slaven and Mrs Signor. Overall, Fretz scored an 84.5%. Looking over the information they received from the state, they concluded that the math program was doing well. Mrs. Slaved credited the students for their hard work. In addition to crediting the students, the principle said that the teachers have implemented a new program called HERE. HERE is a program where a teacher “adopts” a student and mentors them whether it is to improve academically or socially. The staff at Fretz feels the program works well with students who are at risk but does not do much for the advanced students. In class we discussed that middle school is a challenging time period for adolescence. I think the program they have implemented will help to greatly ease the challenges students face. In class we
Public school systems need to be more sensitive to their students. Parents play the major role in determining a child’s academic outcome, but the school system needs to notice children who don’t necessarily acknowledge their gift. These children need guidance -- I believe it is the schools’ responsibility to provide it to them. I have been through a situation that makes me feel strongly about the subject. My example is an indisputable case in point.
The first negative point that I want to talk about is the way that the school send the “Fat Letters” to the parents through the child.
Growing up as a child school has Always been a place is for learning, but only the ones that dedicated themselves to study hard, succeed in life. Unfortunately, some students lack the motivation to concentrate on their studies and they start engaging in other activities such as drug abuse and partying. Teachers fail to get concerned and begin to grant diplomas to unqualified students (Sherry,03). The students graduate with a lifetime disadvantaged. Sherry's argues that a lot of high school graduates go through school without gaining complete literacy. While Mary Sherry states students are graduating without fulfilling their fundamental requirements. She points out that the education in this system is ineffective since it hands out meaningless diplomas (Sherry, 01). Over time,
