Flynn-Piercy (2002) conducted a heuristic study examining the impact of Relate counsellors training on their relationships with their partners. It was found that there was a significant impact on these relationships, which trainees had been unprepared for. The advantages of their training included improved communication, a disadvantage was that partners became “personally de-stablised” (Flynn-Piercy, 2002: 55). As a potential counselor, I would recognize their strengths as an individuals and as a married couple. Within their strengths, I would focus on exploring their values and their expression of communication (love). Understanding that each person has a different love language or expression of communication, it would be helpful to explore this area and identify their communication (love) language. Not only is identifying their method of communication important, but learning how to express each other’s communication language is the key success. As we reach this point, hopefully we could engage in some role-playing to help execute what has been learned and to recognizing what to avoid that can be misinterpreted to what is actually being communicated.
