Before the Revolutionary War The Revolutionary War was a huge moment in history. This had the colonists separate from British control. It was huge for the colonists to break away from British control. Britain had just got out of The French and Indian War and had to come up with a way to pay off the debt from the war some how. So, they decided to come up with the Sugar Act and Stamp Act. The Sugar Act placed tax on sugar, molasses, and other goods shipped to the colonies, while the Stamp Act was a law that required all legal and commercial documents to carry an official stamp showing that a tax had been paid. Women in the colonies decided to create the Daughters of Liberty, what they would do is encourage colonists to make their own things like food and clothes instead of buying British goods. In the fall of 1768, more than 1,000 additional British soldiers arrived in Boston. With the arrival of these troops, violence had insued. On March 5, 1770, a large group of colonists began to surround a group of soldiers in front of the State House. Soon it went from trading insults to shouting at each other, even throwing snowballs. Until, out of an act of self-defense because they thought they were about to be attacked, the British started to shoot the colonists. Five colonists were killed, including Crispus Attucks. This enraged the people of Boston. The soldiers that killed the colonists were arrested and charged with murder. A man named John Adams decided to defend the soldier, despite having others judge him for it. He thought the soldiers should have a fair trial. Adams argued that the soldiers shot out of an act of self-defense. The jury agreed and acquitted the soldiers. It all started with a British sentry who was stationed in Boston. The sentry faced verbal harassment from colonists in the town. Eventually, the group grew larger, and the British sentry called in eight additional soldiers for backup. The large mob of colonists began to physically attack the colonists with clubs and other weapons, leading to the British soldiers to fire on the colonists.
