Rhetorical Analysis #11 Elyse Wanshel, a writer for Huffington Post, wrote an article on the problem of unclean and unsafe water in Flint, Michigan and what 300 plumbers did to try to fix it. The purpose of the article was to inform the readers on the problem occurring and to persuade everyday people to help to fix the problem as well. Throughout the article, Wanshel uses a mixture of long and short sentences in order to make the article more interesting to read. She even uses the sentence fragment, “And last weekend they got a boost from the hundreds of union volunteers.” This sentence fragment creates a sense of informality to relate to an average person. At the very beginning of the article, Wanshel uses the idiom “Everyone wants to see the city of Flint swim rather than sink – including plumbers.” The meaning is that a majority of people want to fix the water problem in Flint, so the plumbers did something about it. This idiom was put at the beginning of the article to grab the reader’s attention and to reveal the purpose of the article. …show more content…
This metaphor is used in order to get the readers to understand the danger of the lead in drinking water. Also in the middle of the article, Wanshel establishes her credibility by saying “According to ABC12…” This makes Wanshel credible because it shows that she did not just make up the information she is putting in her article. ABC12 is also a local news station in Flint, Michigan so it is a primary source of the information
Who knew that Flints water could be deadly? Everyone should be allowed to have the same clean water to bathe in, drink, cook with, and to have fun in. Unfortunately, residents in Flint could not do this for quite some time. These residents were bathing and drinking from this water before the founding of high lead levels in it. Not only was it because of the high lead levels, but the pipes were very old as well. Due to actions made by the city council this caused a lot of problems for the residents in the city of Flint. This effected children, pregnant women, and the elderly the most. Many lawsuits were filed against the city of Flint. It was so serious to the point that Governor Snyder had to declare a state of emergency. This took place January 5th of 2016. High levels of lead in the water and old pipes lead to lawsuits, the sickness of Flint residents, and the city of Flint not doing their job.
An attempt to save money by changing water sources by an indifferent government caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damages, negative health effects, and a total loss in faith in the government of Michigan. Although measures have been taken to mitigate these problems, their effects have already marred the city of Flint and its
The contamination began in April 2014 after the source of the town’s water supply was switched from Lake Huron to the Flint river in order to reduce governmental costs. This was done despite the fact that the Flint River had a strong history of pollution. Among this pollution included car parts, a dead body, and high levels of chemicals. (Semules par 5). Once the pipes were switched there were several complaints of the water having a foul smell and metallic taste (Foley par 4). In the beggining the government denied that anything was wrong despite the fact that lab examinations of the water proved otherwise. Two years after the Flint water crisis gained media attention, the Senate passed a bill that would provide Flint residents with water, but this is

In the initial report by the City of Flint, the city refers to the Flint Water Crisis as a “man-made disaster caused by the City switching to the Flint River as a water source in 2014.” Also, the report stated that Water Resource Centers, located around the city, would provide water filters, bottled water, and at-home water test kits free of charge to Flint residents. This statement shows the integrity, a characteristic of being ethical, of the City because the city took responsibility for the Crisis and followed through on the responsibility by providing goods and service free of cost to residents.
The Flint Water Crisis: What went wrong, article was written by Ryan Felton in January 16, 2016. The story of the article takes place in Flint, Michigan. The city of Flint experienced a crisis that has not been experienced in any other city across the nation. The article states that what happen in flint should not have happened, a city with 100,000 residents should not have to worry about poisoned water running into their homes. The water issue started when Flint appointed emergency manager Darnell Earley, decided to switch Flint’s water source form the city of Detroit to a local Flint River. This switched was aim to find a cheap alternative water source for the residents. However, what the officials failed to do was to test the water and see
Clean drinking water is a necessity in everybody’s life. Many cities take for granted their seemingly infinite amount of water available to them but for Flint, Michigan residents, there is no such luxury. Many people in that area have been sickened or even killed with the water that is available to them. Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan should resign due to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan because his negligence may have long and short term effects on the health of the city’s residents. There is no excuse for how he is handling this; slowly, and ineffectively.
To begin with, the problem was the water contained elevated levels of iron and lead. The problem was such a huge issue because it affected every resident in Flint. Water is a major essential to one’s daily life and dozens of families were using the water supply for several purposes such as showering, drinking, cooking, washing one’s car or home, and watering plants. Furthermore, worried parents are going to the doctor because of rashes and hair loss, it also affected children by dropping their IQ, affecting their behavior, and it has also been inked to criminality and has multigenerational impacts. As a result, the fault of the problem lies with the state DEQ. It was said that the state ignored federal law and didn’t use an anti-corrosive agent to treat the water.
Days after the water source had been switch to Flint river water, reports from Flint residents came flooding in about strange smells and colors in the water. By August, “city officials had issued a boil advisory for the water after E. Choli bacteria was discovered in the water” (Sanburn J. G., 2016). The automobile company, General Motors, announces that it will no longer use Flint’s water stating that it was corroding its engine parts. Children were getting sick. Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha from the Hurley’s Children Ward states, in the article Toxic Tap, “It had to take evidence that children were being poisoned for people to listen, and that is too late.” The Hurley Medical Center
In 1960s, Flint, the largest city of Michigan drove black people to the North End by restricting their freedom of movement. After half of century, Flint’s emergency managers announced that they had decided to use the polluted Flint River for a shortage of water supply. The reason why these preposterous administrative managements occurred is because of the government mismanagement based on environmental inequality and social injustice.
The Flint water crisis began with the city officials’ decision to change their water source in an attempt to save a significant amount of money. This switch from using Lake Huron as a water source, to using the Flint River cascaded into a failure to adhere to federal environmental laws and regulations and eventually the government’s manipulation to hide the problem and inaction to fix it. The city’s largest technical and engineering related failures was their corruption of science by not using corrosion control in the water and skewing testing data and procedures to ignore the problem.
Each specific source of media is in private hands, and is and produced by a small number of individuals, this has also led to claims of this media bias in is reporting. There are many examples of accusations of bias being used as a political tool. The first major forms of popular media that was analyzed was traditional print media. a periodical from the “Wall Street Journal” with the headline “Worry Over Lead Pipes - Crisis Exposes Danger of Aging Infrastructure but Replacing Old Lines is Difficult and Costly”. According to the article, Flint, Michigan started drawing water from the local river in April 2014 as a means of saving money. However Thousands of children in the city have been exposed to toxic levels of lead from corrosive drinking water flowing through the aging pipes. The author make specious interpretations in his reporting of the crisis as a tactic to persuade the reader that there was a failure at all levels of government regarding Flint water the article claims the water was “untreated” this influences the emotion of the argument. A more accurate statement would have been the water was "inadequately treated. Subsequent the author uses an argument from pity by declaring that. People were taken advantage of and they did not receive the justice they deserved. The author has a politically bias that is apparent because The author is not objective in his argument.
What comes to mind when you think of Flint, Michigan? I think of a city filled to the brim with crime and thousands of unemployed workers. A place where you can’t use the water in your own house because you are afraid of getting lead poisoning. As it was once deemed the worst place to live in all of the United States, it is probably hard to think of a time where it was any different. Well, Flint was not always this way. Believe it or not, it used to be a prosperous and beautiful city that was home to one of the richest businesses in the world, General Motors. So you might be wondering, “Why did this amazing place turn into the wasteland it is today?”. Everything that is happening in Flint right now is due to the horrible decision Roger Smith

President Obama declared a state of emergency for Flint, Michigan on January 16, 2016. Considered a neurotoxin, the people of the city consumed tap water that was contaminated with lead. Lead poisoning can produce lifelong health effects, and developing children who are exposed to lead even at low levels are at risk of brain damage, behavioral problems and learning disabilities (Foley, K.
