The Great Fall of Rome
The Roman Empire was the largest empire and collapsed. It collapsed because Germanic groups attacked Rome, the military weakened, the size of the country, production of food, and taxes became to high for citizens. Germanic barbaric groups called Visigoth, Huns, and Slavs caused The Roman Empire. The Germanic groups invaded the western side of Rome. The Roman empire had finally collapsed 476
The number of slaves in Rome grew at a very rapid rate. In 225 B.C. There were an estimated 600,000 slaves in Roman society and within 200 years the number went up to an estimated two million slaves (Burks 9); the proportion of slaves grew from an estimated 15% to 35% of the population (Ibid.). To provide for Rome 's hunger of slaves, the Roman government relied on an ever-consistent income of available slaves. The government 's reliance on slavery cannot be overstated since the slaves were needed to work a majority of jobs in the empire. All of the Roman soldiers lived civilian lives away from battle but they could be called away at a moment’s notice, which left hundreds of jobs stripped of workers. Since the soldier/citizens could be
An individual on average would fight about three times a year, and for the rest of the time travel with the troop. The troops swore an oath to their master, and traveled from city to city looking for work (Roman Gladiator). The social class of the Gladiators was rather ironic in itself. On one hand they were considered slaves, that's the lowest class in a social structure, but on the other hand, some gained popularity and were looked upon as great warriors and heroes. Some rose to celebrity status in a short time as in the movie when Maximus became a hero to the public eye, worthy of praise of greater importance than even the king himself. In the movie this was a direct result in the downfall of Commodus, but this isn't factual, as Maximus is a fictional character. It just demonstrates the influence the Gladiators had on the public eye, he was the Rockstar of the Roman Empire'.

The documentary begins with Verus being brought to Rome to work as a slave, his gladiator training, and the day he gained his freedom inside the colosseum. The documentary not only gives the personal story of gladiator within Rome, it also provides a social and political glimpse within a pivotal time of growth and power for the Roman Empire. The documentary mainly uses reenactments with a narrator providing information throughout Verus’ story.
Most of the gladiators were criminals or prisoners of war that were forced to fight in the arena. Although they were considered slaves, they surprisingly had a better standard of living than most lower class Romans. Because they were financial investments, they had access to doctors and medicine, better food, and exercise. As the gladiator became more and more popular, he would attract greater crowds, making him more valuable, which led to getting him a better lifestyle. For this reason, some free citizens, aristocrats, and even emperors would join in hoping to increase their own wealth. Even slaves would train and fight hard because they could purchase their freedom once they accumulated enough wealth.
Gladiators were a huge part of the Roman society and a large part of Roman culture. The people of Rome loved gladiator battles. The Roman coliseum was built in order to fit the standards of a bloody, brutal battle while also being able to keep thousands of Roman citizens comfortable and entertained.

Throughout the film, gladiatorial games are shown to be one of the most important parts of the Roman society. Gladiatorial games and fights followed a strict procedure and ceremony. They arrived at the Colosseum through an underground tunnel. From there, they were able to access to the arena through a pair of gates reserved to them only. Additionally, the gladiators often marched in groups, with their distinctive uniform and equipment. This is displayed accurately when Maximus enters the arena through a pair of gates and works with a team of other gladiators with similar outfits. However, they did not wear fantasy helmets and bands wrapped around the lower arms and their armors are not always closely historically accurate. Moreover, Roman people loved to watch people battle to death and bloodthirsty violence as a form of entertainment. Spectators in the film cheered and chanted wildly in the Colosseum when their favorite, Maximus was battling with

As the lowest tier of the Roman hierachy they were by defnition without human rights. As Aristotle wrote, slaves were considered; ‘a slave is a live article of propert.y’ (Aristotle, Politics, Section 1253b. 4) Providing usually unpaid labour and considered the property and under complete control of their master, slaves were an integral part of Ancient Rome’s economy and way of life. Gladiators and Charioteers in Ancient Rome are brought up and trained in different ways. The gladiators, for example, could either be prisoners of war, criminals, or free men . However, “The taint of becoming a gladiator essentially took away one’s free status, even from those who entered the profession voluntarily. One could say that all gladiators were slaves” (Futrell 125). Being as everyone is essentially a slave, free men becoming gladiators would have to sign an agreement giving away their rights to choose. This wasn’t something that you would see happen in the realm of chariot racing. Although, both were still considered infamis essentially meaning they did not enjoy the rights of citizens.
According to urban legend, Ancient Rome, once an empire with unequivocal power, was founded by the brothers Romulus and Remus. This urban legend claims that in an argument over where the city would be located Romulus killed Remus and named the city after himself. This is the myth behind the beginning of the Roman Empire. In the beginning, Rome, originally a small town on the banks of the Tiber river, grew from early on trade. The location of the city on the Tiber river provided merchants with an easily navigable way to which they could traffic their goods.
Roman mythology states that twin brothers, Romulus and Remus, who were said to have been raised by wolves, founded Rome (History Learning Site)3. This civilization was located along the Mediterranean Sea, in current day Italy. Throughout its history, Rome underwent many forms of government, including a republic, aristocracy, direct democracy, and monarchy. Machiavelli described the Roman society as a mix of aristocratic and democratic governments (Machiavelli on The Founders Constitution; vol 1, chapter 11)4. Since this essay
