Mary White Rowlandson was a colonial American who was held captive by Algonkian Indians during King Philip's War. She was born in 1637 in Somerset, England. Her parents brought her along with her nine siblings to the colonies when she was young. Her parents were John and Joan White and she married Reverend Joseph Rowlandson in 1656. Their first child, Mary, died after her third birthday and they had three other children named Joseph, Mary, and Sarah.

When Jane was born the doctors thought that she was dead and then proceeded to shoved her in a night stand drawer while they saved her mother's life.When the doctors opened the nightstand drawer they discovered Jane Herbert Wilkinson alive and well. Jane was the tenth child in her family.Sadly,Jane’s father died when jane was only one years old .Jane later became an orphan at the age of fourteen. After jane's mom died she moved in with her aunt .Jane’s family was very wealthy, so wealthy that Jane got her own slave named Kian , they were really good friends and when Jane was sixteen she was on her way to school and Kian told her about a very handsome man that was a doctor and persuaded her to skip school and meet him ,she then proceeded to introduced her to James long ,her future husband. Jane later got married to James long in may of 1815 and had her first child when she was only eighteen years old .In September of 1821 jane was expecting her second child and stayed behind at a post while james,her husband left ,she vowed to not leave till he returned but , he never did. She had her child in a very harsh winter,on the Bolivar peninsula in december of 1821. Jane and her slave,Kian fought starvation for over two weeks.She claimed to be the first english-speaking woman to give birth in Texas but, we know now that she wasn't.Soon after she found out that she was a widow in 1822 at the age of twenty four .

In Delta, Louisiana Sarah Breedlove was born to parents Minerva and Owen Breedlove on December 23, 1867. Sarah was the first unrestricted child to her recently freed (from slavery) parents. Sarah’s parents worked on a cotton field, when Sarah was old enough she worked with them. Although Sarah had a lot of work she managed to have fun with other children. They went to fish fries where people sang and danced, in addition they went to church on Sundays with their families. When Sarah was about 5 years old her mother unexpectedly died and less than 2 years later her father died. Sarah went to live with her sister, Louvenia and her husband, who was very cruel to Sarah. In 1878 the 3 moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi because of the yellow fever outburst.

The majority of published writers were men and the portrayal of women in literature was unsurprisingly one-sided. In the ancient world literacy was severely limited, and the majority of those who could write were male. Women in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries were challenged with expressing themselves in a patriarchal society which refused to grant worth to women's views. Cultural and political events during these centuries increased attention to women's issues such as education reform, and by the end of the eighteenth century, women were increasingly able to speak out against injustices.

Rachel Stallard is quite possibly one of the most dedicated teachers I have ever had at KC. Her love for journalism and her students is evident and attests that teachers can truly have a tremendous amount of influence on their students. To say I've enjoyed ever minute of this class would be an understatement and quite frankly it was the class I looked forward to the most throughout the semester. Her way of teaching is unique and the class is never boring. It will always be one the classes I look back on fondly during my time at KC.
