On September 1, the Senate Bill 4 (SB4), signed by Governor Abbott, went into full effect. This Senate Bill, to sum things up, the ban of sanctuary cities in Texas. A sanctuary city can vary its definition from place to place, but generally, it is a city that limit their cooperation with immigration enforcement. However, with the SB4, now it lets a police officer ask about a person’s immigration status while they/re being detained instead of when they’re arrested. Many arguments have occurred during the past months about these sanctuary cities and whether it is right to keep, or to ban. I believe that Governor Abbott had every right to sign that bill. The SB4 bill was very necessary.

Somehow, it encourages a better relationship between the undocumented immigrants and law enforcement. 70% of undocumented immigrants and 44% of Latinos, not living in sanctuary cities, are less likely to report if they were the victim of crime and 45% of Latinos are less likely report crimes or voluntarily offer information about a crime. This is because undocumented immigrants and Latinos fear police officers would ask about their immigration status. Though, these undocumented immigrants do not need sanctuary cities to cooperate with law enforcement. There is already an existing law in place called a U visa. This U visa is set aside for victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful to law enforcement or government officials in the investigation or prosecution of criminal activity. It protects them and their family sanctuary from deportation. Evidently, these undocumented immigrants can still keep their community safe by interacting with law enforcement without living in a sanctuary city, all it takes is a U
