The role of a School Psychologist is vital to our education system. A School Psychologist has the privilege of working closely with teachers, paraprofessionals, parents, and most importantly, children in order to ensure their educational needs are being fully met. While some schools might primarily focus on academics, development on the whole child is so much more than that. I find the role of a school psychologist one that advocates for the success of a child, including their social and emotional development, even when no one else does. For that reason, I have gained interest in the field of school psychology and aspire to become an advocate for children. I have been fortunate enough to work with children of various ages, backgrounds, and cultures since I was 16. It's important that the child is placed as the priority when it comes to deciding what is best. And by being able to engage parents in their child's education, as well as other professionals, the child will know and understand that their best interest is in mind. With the guidance and education provided by the School Psychology faculty at Cleveland State University, I will work towards changing the narrative for many children experiencing related stories as the young boy from the child care center. In addition, I believe the faculty members will encourage me to expand my area of interest by introducing me to assorted topics within School Psychology such as bibliotherapy, multi-tiered systems of support, school-based interventions, and much more. Most importantly, I believe the School Psychology program at Cleveland State University will encourage me to pursue my career goals within the field of School
