Sectionalism Civil War

Among the economies of the north and south arose many conflicts that led to the tension of the Civil War in 1861. In the 1800s, slavery was a major sectional issue. Northerners were strongly opposed to slavery unlike the south's belief that slavery was economically beneficial.

Sectionalism was ultimately the main cause of the civil war. Sectionalism is occurs when an individual identifies with a geographic section of the United States based on their culture, social, economical, and political interests of that section. Sectionalism eventually caused the division of the nation, and created parts of the nation, which were the Union and the Confederation. As the tensions progressed, the government strived to unite the divided nation by establishing different legislation to satisfy each section; however, multiple historical events, such as the Election of Abraham Lincoln, the passing of the Kansas Nebraska Act, etc, interrupted the balancing act within the divided nation. The tensions between these sections eventually built up and caused the Civil War to occur. The Civil War was caused by the various economical differences within the nation, the conflict between the legality of slavery, and the political disputes in Congress over issues during that time.

Approximately 180,000 Negros served in the Union during the Civil War. The Negro Soldier was overall a good one. One example was at the Assault on Fort Wagner, South Carolina. The 54th Massachusetts Colored troops led the assault and scaled the fort’s parapet and were only driven back after brutal hand-to-hand fighting. The Negro faced some discrimination in the Union Army in areas such as pay. It wasn’t until June 15th, 1864 that the Congress granted equal pay to Negro troops. Several Negro soldiers earned the Medal of Honor. The North attitude towards Negro troops was mainly positive, while the South did not want Negros to serve in the Confederate Army. It wasn’t until the Confederates were running low on men did they allow Negros to serve. The Negros serving in the North felt it as their duty to serve and support the cause for their own freedom.

The Civil War happened due to the many differences between the North and the South. For example economic, social, cultural and political differences. These all helped lead America to a Civil War. But to an extent, the most important cause was the fact there were many disagreements with states' rights versus federal rights.

While the North was more industrial, the South was more rural. Slavery was a much more common practice in the South. This situation quickly escalated into a civil war between the North and the South.

There were some major differences between the northern and the southern states that led to the Civil War. Social, economic, and political compositions contrasted significantly between the two territories. You might say they were absolute polar opposites. War was inevitable.

Broadly speaking, the Civil War arose because of the fact that northerners and southerners became divided over various political, economic and social issues during the early nineteenth century. This phenomenon, known as “sectionalism,” came about mainly because of the differences in the economic structures of the north and the south. As Klein says in this regard, the conflict between the two sections of the country were increased “as the northern states moved increasingly into commerce and manufacturing while the southern states expanded their agricultural economy into a plantation system based on slave labor” (36). Because of the differences in these two economic systems, northerners generally took one side on important political issues while southerners generally took the opposing side, creating animosity between the two. This sectionalism that eventually led to full-on secession and the Civil War between the north and south quickly escalated due to many issues, including economics and politics, but much of the divide lied on the issue of slavery.

The North and the South had many differences such as different American Dreams that could have been the cause of the Civil War. The North was more based on a industrial lifestyle meaning they had factorises and more machinery. Unlike the North the South was build around an agricultural lifestyle which meant they farmed for a living. The American Dream for the North and South differed. People of the North wanted to grow up and be successful wealthy businessman. The Southerners wanted to grow up and own slaves and large lands in which they use for farming. These two opposing ideals formed different American Dreams for both sides which lead to the Civil war of April 12, 1861.

The Civil War was caused by regional differences due to the revolutions and the change in the economy, which had different effects on both the North and South. These differences ultimately led to the South diverging from the North and creating a civil war.

The American Civil War was fought over cultural differences between the South and the North, namely slavery. The differences between the South and the North had an impact on the actual war as well. The North had more resources to commit towards the war, the North had better political leaders during the war, and the South had an easier military strategy to carry out.

The North and South were involved in the Civil War and both developed different strategies. Each military had goals and problems. The cause of the Civil War had many factors, but economic advantages and disadvantages differences definitely played a fact in the war. The South had a few more disadvantages than the North, and what happened after the Civil War.

Sectionalism, in it’s earliest American state was found in the early 1800’s. Tensions were high during this time, with Slavery becoming a much more Sectional issue. The South claimed Slavery a Necessary Evil, and that without it, the South’s economy would collapse. Many in the South believed it was a positive thing, providing slaves with shelter, food, and many cases, religion. On the opposite side, many northerners called for Abolition, or, the end of slavery (“Course Notes, Sectionalism and Slavery”).

The Differences between the North and the South became more and more apparent from 1776, the birth of the American nation, through 1860, the start of the Civil War. It seems that the main differences stemmed from different types of economies in the North and the South. These economic differences then spilled over into conflicting social values and political beliefs. Together, all these differences combined to contribute to the outbreak of the Civil War.
