Selecting the Occupation The occupation that I would be discussing is Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologist. Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologist analyze chemical fluids for treatment or diagnosis. I chose this career because I became interested about it after a lab clinical supervisor talked about her duties and responsibilities during class.

Choosing a career you would like to pursue for the rest of your life can be quite the hassle. You have to consider your strengths and your weaknesses along with the changing economy. My first attempt at a career was in the military, which ended with a medical discharge after a knee injury. After a few different jobs, I felt I finally had a career when I found employment as an assembler with Oshkosh Truck. Unfortunately, in June 2014, I was laid off. It was at this time, I decided to return to college. I have always enjoyed technology and science, so I enrolled at a technical college in Fall ’14; completing general coursework, while figuring out which program would be the best fit for me. Then in March ’15 I realized that I wanted some focus in healthcare during a service-learning experience in Jamaica. I will now be starting the Medical Laboratory Technician program in Fall ’16. The career that I researched was forensic pathology. The job of a pathologist is to determine a person’s cause of death by examining tissues and fluids from the body. A forensic pathologist does this as well, but they are trained to examine people who died unexpectedly or violently and to recognize other things that a regular pathologist might not, such as recognizing something as intentional rather than accidental. They have to determine who the person is, the time of death, the manner of death, and if it was accidental, the instruments which caused the death.
The career that I have set my heart on is a career in the field of Forensic Drug Analysis. I want to become a forensic laboratory technician. A forensic drug laboratory technician is a lab technician that gathers evidence from crime scenes and analyzes any and all data that is retrieved from said evidence. My desire for this job began back when I was 13 and visited a laboratory, then my desire resurfaced again this past summer when my sister’s brother-in-law took me to his work and showed me exactly what he does. The purpose of this report is to identify a long and a short term career objective in my desired field and then develop an action plan. I have chosen Medical Laboratory Science as my desired career field with Medical Laboratory Technologist as my desired position title. I have estimated a timeline of 6 to 8 years in order to be successful.
The career field I am interested in pursuing is the medical field. The field that I am most interested in pursuing specifically in the medical is a surgeon or physical therapist.
I believe that a stakeholder that we wouldn’t think of as much in the US healthcare system is laboratory technicians. Without them, hospitals would run chaos. Phlebotomist use record keeping and they also pay attention to detail which are extremely important in this field. Phlebotomist will often use computers to input all the necessary data about each patient. Preparing samples for laboratory analysis and storing them appropriately are included in the responsibilities of the phlebotomist. If doctors and nurses don’t get those analysis from the phlebotomist, how are they supposed to act when it comes to the care of the patient, if they don’t have a start point? Patient management, progress and decisions about treatment are based on the results
Looking into medical careers that interested me, there were many jobs that involve blood or needles and I am the person that does not like either of those. Taking advanced placement chemistry, I found the classes challenging, enjoyable, and I fell in love with science, especially chemistry. After extensive research, I decided to major in pharmacy, which I found to be a flexible degree. Not only is it flexible, it will allow me to help others because it offers careers in pharmaceutical companies to develop drugs. My main career objective is to be able to help others in a productive career that I enjoy.
After discovering my passion for science and math, I pursue a career in Clinical Laboratory Science with enthusiasm. My desire to study this subject originates from the exciting and rapidly-moving subject area that is highly relevant to major issues facing society today. Clinical Laboratory Scientists play a crucial role in the healthcare field; in detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease in patients. My goal is to be involved in the latest advances in medical research and to constantly be expanding my knowledge about my field. Difference in the amount of education and experience separates Medical Technologists from Medical Laboratory Technicians.
I look forward to the analytical aspect of the job. Maintaining the integrity of the specimen would be part of the everyday task, which is definitely a manageable task. I have read that medical technologists work in a fast paced environment and that accuracy is very important. I understand that a mistake could lead to an inaccurate diagnosis. I work well in fast paced environments and would be very careful to keep myself focused. Another important requirement is patient confidentiality, which is something I understand and would be able to do. This is my main perception of what a Medical Technologist does. Further requirements that I did not list, would be adaptable. I do not mind hard work as long as there is advancement.
