Even with the negative connotations getting a degree is worth it
In today 's generation a college education seems more like a choice than a requirement. From the time we enter elementary school we are being prepared for college. In this society Education happens to raise a lot of questions, for instances; “are people going to college to gain knowledge or for a good paying job?”, “with today 's technology is a degree essential to ones life?” and “ is school meant for everyone?” Education has a lot of connotations behind it which causes debates. The American society and students should be for college degrees because it expands academic knowledge, global exposure, and career preparation. The first reason is college is a place where people should go to gain knowledge, not just to focus on getting a better paying job. Higher education helps people gain academic knowledge in various subjects, it also opens up the mind to view material in a critical and philosophical way. It is an investment that can pay off in the future. As stated in is college worth it by Adam Michelle, “According to the survey, adults with a college degree estimated, on average, that they earn $20,000 a year more because of having achieved a degree. The same held true for adults with only a high school diploma, who believed, on average, that they earn $20,000 a year less. This matched up with 2010 Census Bureau data, which showed that the earnings difference between a high school graduate and a college
Attending college or pursuing a higher education is worth it because a degree ensures a stable, well paying job and provides a better quality of life. In Document A, “Earning and Unemployment Rates Based on Educational Attainment, 2015” compiled by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, a higher educational degree, such as a Doctorate or Professional degree, corresponded to a lower unemployment rate with a higher pay, while little to no educational degree corresponded to a higher unemployment rate with a lower pay. This means people who received a college degree had a better chance of finding and retaining a well-paying job because they are typically skilled in one profession that cannot easily be replaced, such as a doctor or engineer.
College graduates tend to make more money than high school graduates. According to the Economic Policy Institute, “College graduates, on average, earned 56% more than high school grads in 2015” (Pay Gap Between…). Although, this stat might not be for everyone it is for the majority of people. Jobs tend to pay higher if the person has a college degree than if one did not. To be successful people might have to spend money to make money. If someone spends thousands for college for 4 plus years, but in return they are making 56% more money than a high school graduate in the long run it will be worth it. They will have a lot of debt and student loans to pay, but once they pay it off they will start catching up to high school graduate in profit quickly. Many jobs would rather have someone with a college degree than one with just a high school diploma. The stats prove that people tend to make more later on than someone who goes straight into the workforce.
In Life today a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather it is a necessity. We are raised to believe that a person needs higher education in order to succeed in life. There is a saying, “if you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” You may ask is college necessary? There are people out in the real world that have never set a foot on a college campus before and they are doing better than others that have their master’s degree. There are many views from both sides that have a good argument.
The first reason to go to college is you will earn more money. My first piece of evidence is going to college and getting a diploma is worth it, it can get you a better job and makes you look good. My second piece of evidence is others accept jobs for which they feel overqualified. Student debt, meanwhile, has topped $1 trillion. It's enough to create a wave of questions about whether
For the graduating high school senior each year there can be tough choices made about when and where to start college. Some have to decide if continuing their education even makes financial sense. There are many obstacles that a graduating senior must consider when making these decisions. Probably, the most difficult decision is where the funding for the continuing education will be coming from. For some, it does not make financial sense to even continue on with their education. Others face even more uncertain decisions about when to apply to a college and which college to attend. Once the decision to attend has been made, there are varying degrees of completion among the students who decide to attend. Student success depends on their support structure which can consist of family and friends to other outside resources. One can see that this time period, in a high school senior’s life, can be a perplexing and anxiety producing time.
Every year millions of students make the choice to attend college to further their education and obtain a degree. Many of these students have their own purpose for coming to college, most would assume they come to college to get a degree in order to get a job. Some go to college for other reasons, or a combination of reasons. One’s purpose should only be defined by the individual themselves and shouldn’t be assigned to them. This goes the same for making the decision to go to college, one should choose whether they want to attend college. When I made the choice to go to college, I had a plenty of reasons why I should go, but didn’t have many reasons to not go. The one reason I had that would have changed my decision is most likely a concern for most, the cost of attending college. I looked past that and decided to come to college, and I like many thought my purpose was to go to college just to get a degree. After the first moth of college I learned that I have multiple purposes.
The question here is, is college worth it? Many people question this especially high school students who are about to graduate. This debate is still taking place today. The common misunderstood saying is, if you have a degree you will then have a good job. But this is not the case because in today’s society there are so many people with degrees who still cannot find a job. The rate of unemployment is increasing rapidly on a yearly basis. High school students see it this way, if I can’t find a job with a degree then it’s not worth the time, and from there on they quit after high school. On the other side of the debate college education is no longer an option or a privilege, but rather it has become a necessity. The rate of students going to college is increasing every year plus the number of colleges being build is also increasing. In my believe college provides me with higher education that will help me in the future whether it’s with a job or an experience. College education means everything to me and my family because my parents left their home country and immigrated to the United States in order for me and my siblings to have a higher and better education. For me there are numerous reasons why college education is worthwhile, while other people might clearly disagree. About “80% of college graduates say yes college degree is worth it” (debate website). You do not need a college degree to become successful, there are many different paths to take. This study will
A College degree doesn’t only require hard work, but also a lot of money which can lead to conflict. Students might get discouraged to continue with their education because of how much it costs. Having a college education provides the benefits of better job opportunities, higher salaries, and improves
The second reason that college is worth it, is better opportunities. Such as better career’s and job security. As the education corner also notes that “Earning a college degree is the most common pathway to a better career.”. While most students do not know what they want to do when they enter college it provides them with a wide range of skills. As the education corner says “college trains you to think analytically, understand complex subjects and communicate your own critical ideas about them. It also instills crucial skills like organization, self-discipline and the ability to complete tasks from start to finish. In other words, college helps mold you into a more professional individual.”. And while college can sometimes backfire like Peter Cappelli warns of. But even if you don’t end up in your disarered field you will be better prepared for any job field you enter into. While specaliton could potentially hurt graduates after college it can help them just as much. If graduates pick the right field to specialize in they will have no problem to find a job. And even if graduates can not find a job in their specialized field they will still have an advanced skill set as menationed above. Job security is also one of those better opportunities and will provide a better family life. As during the last large recession our country faced college graduates fared much better than most. As the “unemployment rate for
Society has established in our minds that it is extremely important for us to go to college if we want to succeed in life. School as we know is not for everybody. Some of the most successful people in this world did not go to college including George Washington who is one of our founding fathers. People feel that college is the only way in which they can reach their dreams which is not true. With hard work and dedication you can go as far as you want in life. In college you learn what they give you to learn. Many of us just go to college because “it’s the right thing to do”. It gives you a title and nothing more. You can learn what you are doing at college with a simple click of a button at home. The Times had reported last spring that about fifty five percent of college graduates are working in jobs that need a college degree. (thechoice) These young college graduates are not developing
Going to college comes with many benefits. However, you only gain them if you graduate. “The data make it clear that getting a college education is still a good idea – college graduates earn more, and are more likely to have a job in the first place – and is especially important for some Americans” (Rotherham). As Rotherham stated, data shows college is the right choice if you wish to have it easier as an adult getting a job and a higher salary than high school graduates. Although, some think college isn’t worth it because they think it’s like high school, except you have to pay for it. “You might think college is just high school continued, but it’s not. College opens doors for you… It can change and shape you in ways you can’t imagine” (bigfuture). College gives you many opportunities high school can’t. That is a reason why many students choose to go.
In today's society, college is not an uncommon thing to talk about. Anybody can attend college now, which is an improvement for the masses considering that a century ago only the rich and privileged could attend. We should not undermine a higher education due to the benefits it reaps for an individual and the world, however, we often do. Some are skeptical of the idea of a higher education. finances, stress, and absence of living life are their most common arguments, but many fail to realise those extra years in education will pay off in the long run. College not only improves paychecks, it improves the understanding of our world and expands our knowledge to progress forward.
Education is an important factor to a living a successful life. All over the world, people are judged based on how educated they are. Being educated is the only way of proving one’s value. In the article written by Scott Carlson titled “” Carlson discusses the necessity of college education in the United States. He argues that for some people college is a waste of time and resources. Instead of trying to compete in a standardized system, some students should just focus more on learning. I do not agree with this article because college educated students are far more successful than so called “drop outs.” Colleges nowadays are extremely helpful and necessary to people because it helps them find jobs, do well economically,
In today’s society, it is very important to have a college education. Employers are hiring more employees that have a level of higher education; this makes it very difficult for people who only have a basic high school diploma to get a good paying job. If students work hard through college and get a degree, it will pay off big time in the long run. Without one, a student will b stuck working minimum wage jobs. A college degree will help students better compete for a specific job, higher pay, and opportunities that may never have come about without higher education
As I began my research to answer the question, I noticed something that stood out to me. There are many more articles that say college is well worth it, than articles that say otherwise. I began with an article by Liz Weston of TIME. She provided statements and research on both side but ultimately swayed towards saying that a bachelors degree is worth more than a high school diploma. She situated the article based on “The reduced conviction among recent graduates is hardly surprising. Those grads emerged with more debt and poorer employment prospects due to a struggling economy. As the debt gets paid off and their earnings rise, they may have a change of heart”. My parents told me growing up that they took college for granted when they graduated, but as they got older they realized the importance. My father told me recently that the company he works for tends to not hire people without college degrees because some of the requirements for promotions to higher positions require a bachelors or even a masters in
