What has four walls, robots, computers, and a bunch of kids having fun? That’s right, a STEM classroom! Science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM for short, is a thing of the future. There are many reasons why STEM classes should be taught in high school, especially as an option for those who want to pursue STEM related jobs in the future. It also helps people think creatively and help them have critical thinking. STEM is going to be around our whole life, so why not have a class that teaches it. People who want to undertake a STEM job in the future may not have the classes in high school that they want to take. If we had STEM classes they would be able to continue their education in that subject. Take me as an example, I want to have a job as a coder, but my high school doesn’t offer any classes in that subject. It doesn’t have to be a required class, it could be an elective for those who want to take this class. Some people, however, may say that hiring teachers for the job may be too costly. We put a lot of money into our sports each year, don’t you think that we could take a little piece of that and put it into STEM? Creative thinking and critical thinking are good skills to have, and those that you can carry with you forever. For example, problem solving skills help you come up with creative and innovative ways to solve problems. This skill is going to be useful your whole life, whether you break your mom’s favorite vase and need to fix it to if you have limited food in your fridge and need to figure out what to make. Another skill you can gain is creative thinking. This helps you come up with new ways to do things. In contrast, people have stated that you can gain these skills in other ways. Being involved in electives helps students with their grades and new friends. Schools should offer school electives to students because it can help students develop their interest, give them more opportunities and will raise their grades.

I feel that although STEM is working well in school systems so far, I also think that schools are pushing STEM too heavy. 10 years ago, the arts were a bigger deal in schools. More kids were involved in band, choir, and even musicals. Now a day I think that kids think they are too “cool” to be involved in the arts because they feel that they will get made fun of or they won’t have as many friends. I believe that the arts can help students stimulate brain activity and help children do better in school. The arts can be more than just music, it is also just art itself which helps promote creativity.
The main courses that we are taught throughout elementary and high school are English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. While those subjects are important, not everyone will use those studies throughout their lifetime, whereas if they taught subjects like balancing a checkbook, how to fill out job applications and write a resume, how to do an interview, first aid, and so many other skills, everyone would carry that with them and find that information useful after they get out of high school.
According to Joey Rider-Bertrand education is seeing a strange side due to technology and engineering. Teachers are struggling to keep up to date on all the new activities involving technology and engineering. Rider-Bertrand states that class sizes have increase while funding has decreased. All students have expectations to achieve proficiency on state tests and meet graduation requirements. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. According to Rider-Bertrand, education is more focused on technology and engineering in the STEM program.
STEM or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math was started last year in this school. In STEM you get to learn about all these topics by testing experiments and researching. STEM helps everyone learn for the future and helps them become innovators, leaders, educators, and researchers.
There should be an average STEM education taught in school, but other classes that can help students, such as social skills, business skills, credit, and personal finance. More specifically, there needs to be classes that will prepare students for their future outside of school. Also, elementary, middle, and high school buildings should be kept together. The older students could serve as a role model to the younger students, encouraging them to continue being, or to be persistent in school.
STEM integration within America’s schools is a necessary requirement to adequately prepare students to compete in our future society. Although growth in STEM related jobs is quite apparent, knowledge of STEM capacities is necessary to function in the 21st century.
I agree that the arts are important but it would’ve been better for students to learn the STEM fields. However, nothing has proven that including liberal arts would increase or decrease the results of the STEM disciplines. In saying this I think if you have some liberal arts along with STEM it would improve their knowledge even more.
Typically when you ask very young children what they want to be when they grow up, you usually get the same five answers; like pop star, scientist, vet, doctor, or astronaut. These are popular answers because it’s what young kids believe is success, but what children aren’t taught at a young age is the struggles and difficulty of getting to that point of success. The concepts of critical thinking and creative thinking are both gaining increasing importance in the world today. Critical thinking allows people to understand difficult concepts in a manner that is clearer and more defined. They can more readily understand those concepts if they employ critical thinking. In all portions of everyday life, a person is expected to make independent judgments. Those judgments are based on experience and knowledge. Without the ability to think critically, every situation that a person comes across would have to be considered in isolation from all other situations. When a person encounters a problem that is a new one, he or she may be able to use critical thinking to solve those problems.
