Action Essay: Social Media’s Influence on Television Social media is the use of websites or applications that enable users to create or share content. The influence of social media has grown in the past decade to the extent that some people consider it a source of reliable information. It is taken from what they heard and shared between family, friends, and strangers. The information that is posted on social networks are not checked and instead are taken as fact and then are given to someone else as news. This cycle continues until the truth is no longer known unless accessed by the news. With a vast access to so many different ways to get information. The challenge is, can it be trusted? In 2009, after the death of music composer, Maurice Jarre, twenty-two-year-old Shane Fitzgerald from Dublin University conducted an experiment to see how social networks uphold the accuracy of their information. In his attempt to determine this, he created a fake quote and posted it under Wikipedia as something said by the famous composer. Months passed and many people believed this was a real quote until the college student came forward. In an interview after this event Fitzgerald stated, “once anything is printed enough times in the media without challenge, it becomes fact." The characteristics of those that get most of their information from social networks are more inclined to be fast pace and accept what they see as truth. They do not search to see how accurate or reliable the information is as long as everyone else uses it. Social media by itself is not a threat, for it was created for the purpose of entertainment, like television. Although television also holds the important job of conveying information using the news. In our current times, social media is the new method of obtaining information quickly about events. Even though when most people search social media rather than actual news companies, they do not realize how unreliable it truly is. Twitter especially is credited with playing a role as a source of credible information. It has evolved far beyond its origin of being a simple way to keep in contact with friends. In a recent study done by ING, it was shown that one-third of journalists said social media posts are not a reliable source of information. When news of recent events is given on Twitter, it is called into question because it is unable to be determined how true it is. As stated by Johnson and Kaye we must rely on “the credibility of its user.” This proves that social networks are not credible sources at all and Twitter is a social network so how can it be trusted? Even knowing this, we still consider consumer opinion to be more reliable than a statement by an organization. If social media continues to do the job of the news not only will television be affected because of the lack of viewers, but we the people will no longer know what is actuality or lies.
