What learning experiences can you design for yourself that will help you make the transition from student to professional? The text states “as you move from the role of student to professional, evaluate yourself honestly in terms of where you are on the continuum between the two. Push yourself to leave a passive and partial student role behind, choosing whatever you can to assume the roles and responsibilities of a professional. Do not wait until you are in your first social work position to make this transition. A social worker has the responsibility to monitor, evaluate, and improve services to clients because it is part of the standards set forth in the NASW Code of Ethics and part of evidence-based practice. In addition, a social worker has ethical responsibilities to clients, to colleagues, in practice settings, to the social work profession and as professionals, and ethical responsibilities to the broader society. Social workers’ primary responsibility is to promote the well-being of clients. In general, clients’ interests are primary. However, social workers’ responsibility to the larger society or specific legal obligations may on limited occasions supersede the loyalty owed clients, and clients should be so advised.
