Social media has evolved and adapted to become a huge part of our personal and professional lives. In today's standard in Canada, almost everyone has some form of social media, whether it's the standard e-mail or the popular, Facebook, YouTube or Twitter. The phenomenon of social media began in the 1970s with the first e-mail. E-mail enabled people to send detailed messages back and forth, rather than using the traditional snail mail. Every year, "over 25 percent of adolescents and teens [are] bullied repeatedly through their cell phones or the Internet." (cyber bullying stats) and "Cyber-bullying [is] becoming more and more rampant in school and after school among teens and children." (Bullying stats). Social media can be a great thing that can open doors to new opportunities and discoveries, however, when used incorrectly, the digital footprint left behind may greatly affect future opportunities. To prevent a negative digital footprint, children and teens must be educated about internet uses. Social media has become a huge part of our lives and the younger generation is becoming more involved with this new technology. However, the use of social media has been a great debate in classroom settings. School districts have been conflicted with the two options: to teach along and incorporate social media into the classroom or to restrict the use of social media during school hours. In Christine Weiser's article, she discusses the school districts that decided against the use of these social media platforms. Through various interview excerpts, she reveals why educators dislike social media usage in the classroom environments with the main concern "that [they are] creating an avenue for increased bullying". There is also the concerns "about protecting student
Hannah Hudson in her article “10 Surprising Ways to Use Instagram in the Classroom” shows ways to integrate social media into the classroom, “Record Steps in a Science Experiment-Watch as a plant unfurls or a chemical compound slowly changes colors—and preserve the experiment on Instagram.”(Hudson) This allows students to catch up easily when they miss a class. Although social media is a dangerous place for students and it can be scary to let them use it, schools can set rules and limitations to protect the students. Schools can also monitor what students use on their phone. Also, schools can restrict unwanted sites from students. If schools that were to allow students to use social media on their WiFi they could require a class or assembly so they can learn how to stay safe on social

The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon the use of social media by educators, parents and community members to seek change in their school systems. Social media has become the nucleus of communication amongst the youth as well as the rest of society. MCAS (Montclair Cares About Schools) is a Facebook page that was created in order to speak out about the changes taking place in the Montclair, NJ schools. Jasmine Paton states that social media is a distraction for students in school that causes them to do badly in their education. Students log into their social media on their smartphone any chance they get in class. They pay more attention to their phones than their teacher in class. Students in middle school through high school spend about 8 hours using social media. Theirs some schools that has banned Facebook and Twitter from their library computers.
I disagree with blocking social media. There are many ways for students to go around the block. There are apps, data, and many more things you can get. I think as long as students are respectful of their teachers. In this paper i'm going to argue about why I think social media shouldn't be blocked.

One topic that has received much needed attention as social media has boomed over the years appears to be cyberbullying. Bullying in schools has always been a problem, but since the early 2000s, it was not considered an extremely serious issue. However, that began to change as social media applications like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat became such a huge part of the teenage life. Bullying slowly began to transform into cyberbullying with the growth of all of these forms of social media. Cyberbullying has garnered much national attention in the media and among schools and parents that it has left many to ask how far school officials should go in addressing and preventing cyberbullying amongst students. Despite the fact that cyberbullying is mostly made off school grounds and digitally, school officials should have the right to intervene because it affects the student emotionally, mentally, and physically.
Does social media really help students in school? Does it help with a student’s ability to learn? When a student is on social media in school, are they just being distracted? Social networking has become a very widespread thing to do, but since teachers are allowing it in school, students seem to be more distracted. Although social networking in school may make students more interactive with others, teachers should not allow it in school because it distracts students from classwork, gives students anxiety, and social media is filled with inappropriate pictures and language that could get students into trouble.
Social media is frequently looked at as the ultimate driver of communications. Because of this, social media technology, there has been a change in how educators are teaching their students. “A growing number of schools and teachers are utilizing social media in the classroom to further engage students in the learning process. Social media is a tool that teachers can use to make their classroom more engaging,
social media is an online medium with its users can easily participate, share and create content including blogs, social networks, wikis, forums and virtual worlds. online media also use web-based technology that turns communication into interactive dialogue, and makes it easier for people to communicate with people who are far away.
Social media is a form of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other contents.
Social media should be used in schools for students and teachers benefits. Social media can have a positive impact on students if used correctly. Letting students have access to social media can give them the chance to share and express their ideas with one another. Not only can students utilize social media, but teachers can as well. Teachers can use sites of their choice in their classroom, allowing them to get connected with students. One of the main fears that school organizations have is students encountering the dangers of social media, however, they are inevitably going to encounter it at some point. Students need to be taught responsibility and proper social media etiquette. Besides the potential dangers students can encounter, students themselves can be a potential danger. However, even if schools ban social media, bullies will find other ways to harass fellow students on the internet. Banning social media is not guaranteed to end cyberbullying. Social media, as a whole, is doing more good than bad for students, therefore, it should not be banned in schools.
Some school districts currently block all social media from school computers and other devices logged onto their wifi. There is an ongoing debate about whether or not all schools should block social media. Both sides have a list of why their side is right. Those against it call social media a distraction and a waste of time. They bring up, in their debate, cases of cyberbullying and points on how social media discourages face-to-face communication. They state the dangers that social media causes such as strangers and pedophiles. In the end, these people just want to protect their children from those risks. However, schools should allow social media in schools because without it high social media users begin to develop depression and anxiety, schools would be able to engage school communities through social media, and schools could use it for school work. Social media has many good uses, and there is no reason for it to be blocked and trying to ban social media will not work. There are many pros to allowing social media in schools and failing to integrate it causes a disservice to the children, teens, and to practically everyone. Social media is here to stay so everyone might as well adapt and learn from it (Nicholls).
