The synthesis of alum was carried out adequately as evidenced by the correct changes in the appearances of the mixtures and compounds in various stages of the synthesis process as well as the appearance of the synthesized alum (Table I). Although the weight of the alum placed in both crucibles was similar, the weight of KAl(SO4)2 in the crucibles after heating was unequal relative to the weight of the alum (Table II). A plausible cause for such disparity could be the loss of alum due to the spattering of contents observed during the initial phase of heating. The calculations used to determine the waters of hydration had a limitation because all the difference between the weight of alum and KAl(SO4)2 could only be attributed to the water lost

The second part of this experiment involved measuring out 0.3 grams of the hydrated salt and then finding the mass of the fired crucible, the lid, and the hydrated salt. The value for this measurement was 45.691g for Trial 1 and 48.057g for Trial 2. The hydrated salt was then heated for 10 minutes using a bunsen burner causing water to be released and therefore the mass of the salt to decrease. After being heated for 10 minute the mass of crucible, lid, and the anhydrous salt were 45.620g and 47.945g, for Trial 1 and Trial 2 respectively. The mass of for Trial 1 decreased by 0.071 g and the mass for Trial 2 decreased by 0.112g after being heated for 10 minutes. After making the first mass measurements the crucicle was heated again for 2 minutes to reassure that all the water molecules were removed. The second mass measurement for both trials decreased from the first mass measurement showing that some water
The debate between plastic or paper bags is one that continues to plague us today. There are many reasons communities, including Nampa, should limit the use of plastic but not completely get rid of them all at once. Communities should limit the use of plastic bags because completely getting rid of them at one time may lead to more problems.
The two essays that I choose for the synthesis essay are Parkinson’s Alley by Joy Horowitz and The Environmental Issue from Hell: Global Warming Is the Great Moral Crisis of Our Time by Bill Mckibben. Parkinson’s Alley is about residents in California’s Central Valley town of Visalia who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. This part of California has the highest number of people diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease. The pesticides that are used in the surrounding farms seeps into the water that the residents use every day, causing them to get the disease. The Environmental Issue from Hell: Global Warming Is the Great Moral Crisis of Our Time is about how global warming is a moral crisis that, if not combated

To begin Lab 7 of Chem 115, a clean and dry porcelain crucible and its cover were obtained. Next, an iron ring was attached to a ring stand. A clay triangle was placed on top to the ring and a Bunsen burner was placed under the ring. Following the setup for the experiment, the crucible and its cover were placed on the clay triangle and were heated for about five minutes. After, the burner was turned off and the crucible and cover were left to cool to room temperature. Once the crucible and its cover had reached room temperature, tongs were used to move them to a wire gauze. Using the wire guaze, the crucible and its cover were transported to an analytical scale to weigh and record the mass of it. Next, a strip of magnesium was obtained and

The purpose of this lab was to explore the characteristics of hydrates. Hydrates are solid ionic compounds that contain water that is chemically bound to the crystal. In doing this lab, the percentage of water contained in various hydrates, if dehydration is a reversible or irreversible change, and the mathematical relationship between starting mass and mass lost. As there is no simple way to predict the amount of water molecules in a hydrated compound, it must be determined by experimenting. This experiment involves heating said hydrates so the water molecules evaporated from the solid compound. In the different
After putting the CH2Cl2 to a beaker containing the drying agent anhydrous sodium sulfate, a sticky white solid was recovered.
Introduction: The purpose of this lab was to find the relative solubilities of some salts of the Alkaline Earths and use that information to find the order which they appear in the periodic table; also use that information to efficiently find an unknown alkaline earth halide. Also to find the relative oxidizing powers of the Halogens given and using that information finding the order of the Halogens in the periodic table; also use that information to efficiently find an unknown Halogen.
The objectives of this laboratory are: a) To experimentally determine the mass percent of oxygen in the compound potassium chlorate (KClO3) via the thermal decomposition of a sample of potassium chlorate. b) To qualitatively demonstrate that the residue resulting from the decomposition of potassium chlorate is potassium chloride.
MET receptor tyrosine kinase with its ligand can promote cell survival, proliferation, and invasion. The activation of MET signaling is a common hallmark of various human cancer types, and thus, inhibition of MET signaling is an promising therapeutic opportunity for the treatment of cancer.
An unknown material can be determined by using simple chemical tests and separations which is called as inorganic qualitative analysis. The separation of cations depends on the difference in their propensity to form precipitates. Separation scheme is used to classify cation into five groups on the basis of their physical and chemical behavior opposed to some reagents. Classification is based on whether there is formation of precipitates or not when metal cations react with the reagent. The five groups of cations and the characteristics of these groups are as follows:
The most popular type of smoke alarm is an ionization chamber smoke alarm. These contain 0.28 micrograms of the radioactive isotope americium 241, in the form of americium dioxide. Americium is a synthetic element, so it must be produced in a nuclear reactor. Americium is made from plutonium 241, yet this needs to also be made in a nuclear reactor. Uranium 238 in a nuclear reactor it is hit with a neutron, which makes uranium 239. Uranium 239 has a half-life of 23.5 minutes, the uranium goes through beta decay becomes neptunium 239. This neptunium will then form plutonium 239 via beta decay over two days, this is then bombarded with two neutrons to become plutonium 241. Plutonium 241 has a half-life of
MgSO4 ● 7H2O was obtained by my laboratory instructor. The support ring was attached to the ring stand. The pipe-stem triangle was put on the ring. A dry porcelain crucible was placed on the triangle. A ceramic-centered wire gauze was put next to the support stand. The crucible was heated for 5 minutes with the Bunsen burner flame. After extinguish the burner flame, the hot crucible was placed on the wire gauze from the triangle by using the tongs to cool for accurately determining the mass of an object. The mass of the cooled down crucible was measured. Hydrate was added to the crucible on the balance until the total mass was about 2.2g compared to the crucible alone. Total mass of crucible and the hydrate was recorded. The crucible with the
