This means that my setting does comply to the National Curriculum but does adapt to the levels of ability of the current pupils. Even though we are unsure of the complete level of understanding of the pupils we, as a setting, do always try to promote equality and diversity within our resources and work activities, this means out pupils will see that all children, young people and adults are equal and all have the same rights regardless of age, gender, and ability.
1.3-
The benefits of promoting and valuing cultural diversity within a school setting is extremely important as children and young people will learn to understand all the different cultures and respect them. Learning about different cultures and religions helps a young mind broaden and see that no matter what culture, race or ethnicity another person is they still have equal rights and opportunities and can achieve the same goals as each other. For example, many people see all Indian/Pakistani adults as doctors, this is a common form of stereotyping and if an English child is lead to believe that this is only the case then they may not want to follow that career path due to feeling that they are not allowed. Within my setting we promote cultural diversity within our resources, this means that when we show our pupils books or home-made resources to help assist them with their learning we always try to ensure that all ethnic backgrounds and abilities are shown
Key legislations and codes of practice relating to diversity, equality, inclusion and discrimination in adult social care settings are:
This short quiz really helped to challenge my awareness on how ignorant I was on my knowledge concerning cultural diversity. To flash forward a bit to as a future educator, I feel by building my own recognition of diversity and variety of perspectives, I, as a participant in the education field will better understand how to maximize achievement and construct a more equitable educational classroom for my pupils. One example that came to my mind as I was writing this discussion is a this particular scenario as I am frequently asked about my
I believe that adolescents would benefit from learning about different cultures. Since we live in America, there are a wide variety of cultures and ethnicities that are in each school. I think that teachers should teach their students about different cultures. This will give students a better understanding of where other children come from and their beliefs. This will allow students to become better educated about their peers and hopefully be more understanding of their differences. Even schools that do not have a wide range of diversity, should still learn about other cultures
Dominic might be feeling excluded, lonely, confused and have low self esteem as he could feel that the children he sees attending the school have a higher status in society as they are allowed to attend the school. He is old enough to have probably attended school in his home country before moving to Britain and may be missing it and may make him feel anger towards the country/system he has moved to. He will be
While the children are learning different aspects of different cultures this is the first step to help the children promote an understanding of cultural diversity which will help stop stereotyping and hopefully reduce prejudice and discrimination.
My parents came to the United States because they endured to have better opportunities and raise their children with a great education system. Cultural Diversity is very substantial in my everyday life because I eat Indian food every day, wear Indian clothes and is encompassed by Indian culture in my house, even though I am in America. My parents have showered me with discipline and have always given me lessons on life values and to make the right decisions. Ethnicity has consistently been a great factor in representing me because people and students have always seen me as an Indian. I have always embraced my ethnicity and never allowed anyone to bring me down. In Carlsbad, I am absolutely a minority, but that makes me have higher standards, to be the best I can so that I can achieve extraordinary goals that I know I can attain. I also have friends that obtain different cultures like Chinese, Hispanic, and German. From experiencing and learning about diverse cultures from my friends, Diversity has opened my mind to the improvement that our society can compose. Cultural diversity helps people bring unique gifts out of their shell and it gives me the opportunity to develop creative ideas into plans and thoughts, due to being exposed to different cultures. The ability to communicate and understand distinctive cultures is very valuable, and it helps people improve their social skills. From college to the workplace, cultural diversity is present and it will bring great interactions with people and it also will help you relate with
This is an essential exercise for any school striving to be inclusive. Ainscow (2007:3) argues that the biggest challenge facing the education system, is the development of practices that will reach out to learners failed by existing arrangements. It is my belief that the most effective way of tackling this matter is through this collaborative way of working. This enables practitioners to challenge and redefine entrenched views of ‘difference’ that can have a negative impact on certain types of learners and find new ways of moving forward.
A diverse classroom provides many advantages such as being exposed to different experiences/perspectives, which helps develop high order critical thinking skills and promotes personal growth. These factors can help students excel in the future, and help bring the future generation unite.Multicultural education is broadly defined, takes many forms and has an impact on every aspect of the school’s operation including: staffing, curriculum, testing, disciplinary policies, students, parents, and community involvement. They will make the society a better place to learn, work and live
“Researchers have documented that students’ exposure to other students who are different from themselves and the novel ideas and challenges that such exposure brings leads to improved cognitive skills, including critical thinking and problem solving”(Wells, Fox, Cordoba-Cobo). In other words, it makes people smarter. The range of benefits is not limited to when the students are in school. It can also have a great impact on their adulthood. “Ninety-six percent of major employers, Wells, Fox, and Cordova-Cobo note, say it is ‘important’ that employees be ‘comfortable working with colleagues, customers, and/or clients from diverse cultural backgrounds’”(Wells, Fox, Cordoba-Cobo). There really is no harm in making American schools more diverse and more accepting of non-white ethnic groups. This will help students navigate through society when they are older as America has become increasingly diverse. Schools in the U.S should be teaching ALL students to get along and show them that they are offered the same
The teachers should have the ability to teach diversity in their class lessons, at least once. In history, they can talk about the wars outside of America to show that back then and still now, people with different diversity doesn't always agree on everything. In language arts they can talk about the multiple heroic people who stood up for their own beliefs and cultural rights and why it's important to them. These lessons can encourage students to recognize and acknowledge students to treat others equally. In “Making the Future Better, Together.” By Eboo Patel on lines 40 to 42, it states that “...people from the four corners of the earth could do remarkable things together, even build a nation, and show humanity that we are better together.” That means we can all come together as one to show that we can all unite as a nation. We proved that by coming and putting all the creative and different cultures and languages together in one school and
Diversity may have its challenges but many fail to see the benefits that come along with it. The knowledge and experience that comes along with diversity is priceless in this lifetime. Exposing oneself to culture can be a life changing experience that enriches someone’s life like a college course cannot. Another advantage to encountering diversity in school or the workplace would be that it can open many more doors to showing kindness to someone who comes along a person’s life journey. In my experience, many people avoid people who speak another language or act in a way that is different from their own. Who knows what opportunities can arise when a person becomes a little bit more open minded to different cultures and traditions. When
As a matter of fact, a multicultural classroom will help children accept and respect that there are other kids and people who are not the same as them and are from a different place. This way, a multicultural classroom would mold a child to thinking that they are in a safe and accepting environment that will lead to success in the future. If only one culture is focused, learned, and talked about in a classroom, it will result in children believing that this specific culture is superior to the others. However, if a multicultural education were to be authorized, it would enable and acknowledge all cultures. Children would be able to note that each culture has its own strengths and weaknesses that makes it equal to any other cultures. It would encourage understanding and tolerance between the diverse groups, which would allow students to relate to one another in class.
First of all, culturally diverse classes bring educational benefits. Students who participate in group meetings, discussions let alone socialise with minorities were highly likely to have increased level of cognitive skills and education itself. When you are exposed to different dimensions of diversity, you encounter people with different personality, behaviours and mentality which assists you to understand yourself better. Due to this diversity, one would be able to understand which aspects he is partial to and may possibly apply that to himself. Moreover,
The United States population is growing from the diversity of cultures and the future depends on jobs such as doctors and nurses to be filled with diverse candidates to meet the demand (HRSA). There is also big need for teachers who are culturally competent or can instruct students from all cultures so that all students will succeed. This begs the question to what is culture and how it affects learning. According to NEA, culture is the defining notion of who a person is and how they fit into society. There are so many aspects to culture but that should not hinder a teacher from trying to understand what makes a student who they are. For teachers, there is a constant learning to “become culturally competent over time”(NEA). What better to learn from peers who are more culturally diverse than yourself. In the studies from Luquis, Perez and Young, there is a demand for faculty to be more diverse. I believe that more diversity would greater help students because I could ask for advice from another faculty member about a student with the same or similar culture about how to help them succeed in class.
I believe students should understand and appreciate cultural differences in their own country and throughout the world. By giving students the opportunity of being exposed to different cultural traditions and values is helping prepare the students for citizenship in a multicultural democracy. When a student attends a school that has a diverse population this allows for the child to develop a greater understanding of the perspectives of children form different cultural background. Cultural diversity enhances the school experience by giving students the opportunity to value other students lives and identities in a variety of ways. By allowing the students to explore culture, this lets them know how much they may have in common and how others may see the world very differently compared to their classroom. This can also teach students how to understand culture and help establish relationships with people from cultures that are different than their own.
