In 2008 the popular MTV series 16 and Pregnant aired which followed young girls who got pregnant during high-school. The show followed teens throughout their pregnancy and into the first week or so of having the child. The show was successful in a sense that teen pregnancies dropped and continue to drop, however this show created a societal message that glorifies teen pregnancy through its sequel Teen Mom. Throughout this essay I will show how the series fails to show the negative impacts teen pregnancies have on their family system, the UA research in Missouri on this matter, the general view of teen pregnancy and my recommendation for how to silence the true societal message the show gives in hopes that the MTV producers will take my recommendation

When it comes to the topic of do TV shows like “16 and Pregnant” and “Teen Mom” promote or discourage teenage pregnancy, most of us will readily agree that it in fact does promote teenage pregnancy. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how does this promote teenage pregnancy. Whereas some are convinced that it promotes teenage pregnancy through the fame some of the young couples have achieved, others maintain that it in fact discourages teenage pregnancy by showing the struggles and reality of having a child at such a young age. I agree that the show “16 and Pregnant” promotes teenage pregnancy because a new Indiana University research study confirms it.

Since its peak in 1990, teen pregnancy has declined significantly, but is still held as the center for much controversy, especially with recent reality television shows that many claim are “glorifying” teenage pregnancy (The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, 2014; Henson, 2011). Although numbers of pregnant teens are down, certain areas continue to struggle with this issue, and are seeking new ways to get the message across. This case study focuses on a series of print and transportation advertisements that were distributed in Milwaukee and Chicago from approximately 2009 through 2013 (Murray, 2013). The following study also showcases the stigmas surrounding the ads and links relevant coursework from chapters two, three, and four via the campaign’s choice of tactics.

A few weeks ago, I was at a store when I came across a very young girl. She must have been no older than seventeen, but was so obviously pregnant. This did not surprise me since this is something common here in the Imperial Valley; we have such a high rate of teen pregnancy. What really caught my attention was that she was not alone; she had in her cart a toddler that kept referring her to mom. All I could think of was that such a young girl should not be concerned with raising a child, especially not two. Most young girls should be spending their teen years hanging out with their friends, going to parties, and enjoying school, but getting pregnant so young cuts out all your years of fun and freedom. The reality of the problem is that every year, teenage pregnancy, in the Imperial Valley, is increasing at an alarming rate. The Imperial Valley Press states that the “Imperial County has the fourth-highest teen pregnancy rate among 58 counties in the state” (Ruth 6). “Officials credit these high rates to a lack of sexual education that teaches both abstinence and protection and access to reproductive health care in the county” (Ruth 6). That brings the question to what the community should be doing to decrease these rates and help prevent teen pregnancy. Nothing is scarier than the thought of becoming a parent at a young age. Sadly this is a problem that has become common all over the world. Today it is easy to find someone who has experienced teen pregnancy themselves or knows someone who has. So now the question is how do we solve this problem? Why is it so common?

It is hypothesized that there is a direct correlation between low socioeconomic status and teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy, for the purpose of this paper, is defined as a teenage girl between the ages of 13-19 who are currently pregnant (UNICEF). Low socioeconomic status is defined as families living at or below the poverty threshold. The independent variable for this study is teenage pregnancy and the dependent variable is low socioeconomic status.

Many teen’s in America get the education they need about sex, but they are not aware of the consequences of having a child at an early age. Teen pregnancy is a very controversial social issue and the vast majority of Americans consider the outrageous rate of teen pregnancies a severe issue, certainly a problematic occurrence that is believed to be a moral decline in our country. Teenagers are physiologically capable of reproducing but not emotionally or financially prepared to be parents at such a tender age. Through various research studies a plethora of determinants has pin pointed teens unprecedented pregnancies. One cause of this problem is the apparent indication of social separation or disadvantage. Within this issue you would find poverty, single parent households, educational disadvantages on the parents behalf, a lack family/parental support, and unemployment. A child’s educational performance, inappropriate sexual acts, and inferior apprehensions about their futures play a vital role in teen pregnancies as well. Amongst the listed disadvantages the three that take precedent are lacks of family communication, sexual abuse, and poverty. Furthermore, teen mothers do not fit the ideal ideology of the normative scheduling of motherhood, therefore, ultimately resulting in negative consequences for them and society. What needs to be understood is, as to why the numbers of teens are becoming parents at such a vernal age.
