The events that unfolded in Edgar Allen Poe’s, “The black Cat,” are all due to one person, the narrator. It is because of his Mental state, being an alcoholic, and being abusive to his wife and pets that the fault lies heavily on the narrator. What this paper will entail is all three of the reasons why it is the narrator's fault for what happens in the story and it will come to a conclusion based off the findings in the story.

One of the reasons that the narrator is responsible for his own actions is because he is an alcoholic. Because he relies so heavily on alcohol to make it through the day, he is not of sound mind and therefore his judgment is off. This can …show more content…

If he was not eventually stopped there would be no telling what he could do. Due to the day in age he was sentenced to death. However he should have received help and been admitted to a mental facility so he could be treated as a patient and hopefully one day recover from his illness. For this reason he is responsible for the actions that took place however, his actions were not entirely his fault. The final reason why the narrator is responsible for his own actions is because he is abusive to his wife and pets. The events that unfolded such as him physically abusing his wife and carving out his cat's eye support this and because of these actions this sets up the events that happen later in the story. Because of his abusive nature this causes his wife and pet cat to be driven away from him and who knows maybe if he had not abused his cat then he would not have got made at its absence and carved his eye out. For this reason it is apparent that the fault in the story lies heavily on the narrator and if he had not been abusive then certain things in the story would not have happened.

To conclude this argument it is very clear that the actions that took place in, “The black cat,” are the narrators fault. It is on account of him being an alcoholic, being in a poor mental state, and being abusive to his wife and pets that the fault lies in the
