When we break down the color white, the main quality it represents is purity. The color white was used everywhere in the book, but there was a little twist to it. It wasn't always what it seemed, just like the American Dream. “They were both in white, and their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown in after a short flight around the house,”(8). This quote has the character Daisy in it. When we heard Daisy we think of the flower. So delicate and innocent and full of purity, like the white petals, but once you reach the yellow middle, all she cares about is her picture perfect image. Daisy isn't what she seems “Fitzgerald carefully builds Daisy's character with associations of light, purity, and innocence, when all's said and done, she is the opposite from what she presents herself to be,”(Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). Once we get to know Daisy better and better, we start to realize that she is in fact the opposite. Daisy craves for people to look at her the way they look at Gatsby and think to themselves, “wow she has it all”. Daisy goes to extreme limits to make her life look as perfect as possible, even if she is completely miserable, she will keep hiding her sadness and try and live her fake life. The color white represents the American Dream because even though this idea of a perfect life is so desirable, no one really fully accomplished the goal, just like how the color white was used as innocence, when broken down, we see that it symbolizes the exact

White is one of the clearest examples of deceiver in the novel because of its role in covering up and blurring the truth. Tom also displays the color white, not through clothes, but through his behavior. Tom is a raging racists clearly shown when he says, “if we don’t look out for the white races we will be utterly submerged”(P.13). Tom associates the color white with superiority and dominance not only in regards to race, but also in regards to money. His pride and privileged as a rich white man blinds him from reality and progression in America. He does not accept the possibility for anyone other than people like him to be successful and dominant in America.
What does the color green make you think of? Do you think of beautiful forests home to unique animals and intricate ecosystems? Do you think of fresh ripe kiwi in the summer? Do you think of broccoli ,which takes the cake as the most hated vegetable by children under 8? A lot of times people see colors very basically and don’t think about the connotation or symbolism behind them Fitzgerald is the contrary. It is later found out that the symbol of white very much plays into the ironic theme of illusion versus reality. The characters in the novel are not the only ones dumbfounded at the confusion of life; things are not in the norm anymore, and Fitzgerald's new use of the color white
In the past the American Dream was an inspiration to many, young and old. To live out the American Dream was what once was on the minds of many Americans. In The Great Gatsby, the American Dream was presented as a corrupted version of what used to be a pure and honest ideal way to live. The idea that the American Dream was about the wealth and the possessions one had been ingrained, somehow, into the minds of Americans during the 1920’s.
