The overall course of English 102 with Professor Lyn has impacted my writing and me as an individual. Not only did the course help me improve my writing, but it helped me think of the ideas and norms that we ascribe to in the world as more complex. This portfolio shows how some of the learning objectives of English 102 reflects my growth as a writer and thinker. The papers that are included in this portfolio demonstrate my mastery of the learning objectives of this course. There are first drafts to show where I began in my writing process and final drafts to demonstrate my understanding of what was wrong in my first submissions. My ability to edit and recognize errors in my paper shows my improvement of writing. The different types of writing and audiences the papers are intended for impacted my approach of writing these papers.
One of the papers included in this portfolio is the essay on Perfect Peace. The type of writing for this essay was argumentative. The intended audience are those who read the book and could not understand the complexities that child abuse can cause to one psychologically. I demonstrate my mastery of the learning objectives of English 102 in this paper by thinking outside of the “box”. The “box” is the prison that society puts us into by encouraging that the patriarchal norms are correct and the only way to live. I thought outside of the prison by not thinking that Emma Jean is simply wrong for what she did and that she’s not justifiable. I
Over the past year I had a chance to develop a deeper understanding of what it takes to develop successful paper. Taking English 1010 was a great experience because it prepares students on becoming better writers through college life. Even though this is my second year in college I was unable to take English 1010 the first year, but taking this class truly show me what college professors are looking for when we are ask to write a successful paper. College professors expect every student to be able to evaluate each topic and be descriptive in their essay.
Like transforming from a caterpillar to a butterfly, my writing style transformed from something mediocre to something quite exceptional. In high school, even when I took advanced placement English and Literature courses, I was never good at writing. My writing would lack structure, reasoning, syntax, and a well-defined thesis statement. My inadequate grades on writing assignments lowered my self-esteem, so I assumed I would never enjoy writing papers because I believed I could never improve. However, since attending a university my writing style has improved far beyond my expectation. My EN 101 course enhanced my understanding of the different ways I could approach my writing. Also, it enhanced my comprehension of outlines to complete assignments. Investing quality time into my writing made a substantial difference because I became a stronger writer. Through the late nights, constant revisions, and agonizing head traumas, I learned that my writing is truly spectacular whenever I incorporate well-defined thesis statements, provide sufficient supporting evidence, and maintain a clear focus in my assignments.
As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.
Throughout the course of English 16, I have improved my writing. The worksheets and notes provided helps me become a better writer than I was when I first stepped into the classroom. Revising my paper after the second draft or ‘final copy’ helped me better under the process and time that must be in to make a perfect paper. In the course, there were four assignments, a research paper, a research proposal, diagnostic essay and a essay about appearance.
Proficient writing is an essential skill in all aspects of academic and professional achievement. English 101, Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric, provided the framework to good writing, teaching me composition and rhetoric fundamentals, polishing up my grammar and style, and expressing a clear message. English 102, Composition, Rhetoric, and Research, continued to build on the skills I learned in English 101, focusing on the subject matter research process and employing various rhetorical and literary devices to better express a clear message to the reader. The course also improved my critical thinking capacity, allowing me to culturally evaluate my target audience, present logically flowing arguments using appropriate language and structure, and critically reviewing my writing projects for content and expression. Every writer inherently knows there’s always room to improve and I hold fast to this mindset in all academic, professional, and personal writing projects. English 102 has both challenged and inspired me to grow into a much better writer than before I began the class, providing the necessary skills to be not just a good writer, but a great writer.
A central part of Rhetoric and Composition classes is being able to understand an apply rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking and reading, the process of creating a paper, and being able to understand source formatting. Throughout this course, I’ve written new types of papers, expanded on my analytical abilities, and have gained valuable information on how to improve on papers that I’ve written in the past. My argumentation and organization have improved greatly by in-class workshops and critical, but well deserved, teacher comments. These skills are essential in writing I’ve learned and improved on many of the goals listed in the syllabus this semester, which will be necessary for my future schooling.
My last class was not a good writing experience; therefore I was hesitant to fully embrace this session’s writing course. Because I do not believe in expectations, my goals were based on previous writing experiences. This helped to support what writing confidence I had left to give this course a chance to be different. In English106, my desire was to improve my writing skills, find weaknesses in my writing, and be a better writer at the end of the course.
During this semester of English 112, I have learned a lot about different research techniques as well as different writing strategies. Although, I feel that I have grown as a writer this growth did not lack growing pains. This course differed greatly from the English 111 and 113 courses that I have taken in previous semesters. It proved to be one of the most challenging English classes that I have taken so far in my academic career. There were many elements of the pre-writing process introduced during the past sixteen weeks, such as writing a preliminary draft and annotated bibliography, that I have never been exposed to before. The critical reading, critical thinking, and critical writing process in this course definitely stretched me as a writer and student. There were three writing styles practiced during this course along with three different genres. The first paper written was in the MLA (Modern Language Association) writing style coupled with the humanities genre, the second was written in the APA (American Psychological Association) writing style coupled with the social science genre, and the third paper written was in the CSE (Council of Science Editors) writing style which was coupled with the sciences genre. These different genres gave great insight as well as a different perspective to my chosen topic, pregnancy. Although, I feel I have a better knowledge of these different types of writing styles and critical writing procedures, I still have room for growth as I
The coursework exposed me to new authors and styles of literature, and acted to shape my writing style. Writing numerous research papers and critical analyses has strengthened my cognitive abilities. Over the course of the last four months, I have developed numerous writing skills each week from our classes daily Khan Academy lessons, and I have learned new, strong verbs to incorporate into my english papers. In this reflective essay I will explain my strengths and weaknesses as an english writer, and give textual backup to prove how I have grown.
In this letter, I will be discussing what I have learned throughout this quarter and how the Stretch Writing course helped me become a better writer by learning how to strengthen my writing. Students in the Stretch Composition of ENG 108 and ENG 109 are supposed to accomplish six Student Learning Outcomes and I believe that I have accomplished every SLO through my writing assignments. The program has been beneficial to me since I was given more time to read, write, revise and to put together the course portfolio. In this electronic portfolio, you will find three different essays that were assigned during the Stretch Composition of ENG 108 and ENG 109. The first essay that I submitted for my English 108 course at the California State Polytechnic

I have come a long way as a writer. I did not grow up learning English. Which left me not knowing how to properly write even a single sentence. I knew nothing about proper sentence structure nor what word to use. Over the years I have tried my best to practice and learn the different rules in writing. This portfolio serves as the evidence of my journey as a writer. This portfolio includes tools that I have acquired all throughout the course which I will be using all throughout my writing career. Each of the materials in this folder show how I broke the chains of unhappiness in writing, and feel the freedom to write what I believe in. Throughout my journey I had made numerous mistakes. I took these mistakes and learned from them. Development in writing reflects a continuous process where I will make numerous mistakes and learn from them to better myself as a writer.
Throughout my academic career, I have always been aware of that writing is one of my greatest weaknesses. But, this semester English 120 class has helped me gain more knowledge and acquire skills that would improve my writing significantly over the course. I have learned different techniques such as how to annotated lengthy papers, how to cite sources in MLA format. I can carry over all tools I have learned in this course and re-purpose them for intensive writing classes I take in the future.
