Carl Plantinga says that in Hollywood films “the convention of the happy ending makes it likely that empathy will bring the rewards of a favor-able outcome for the protagonists; thus our emotional investment will likely yield psychologically pleasing results”. It is true that if you create a story with likeable characters and a pleasing outcome, you are more likely to create a more enjoyable experience based on the emotional attachments an audience may or may not have. If the phrase is not self-explanatory already, the ‘happy ending’ must require that either a film’s characters, the audience or both are left ‘happy’ by the conclusion. Characters’ happiness and audiences’ happiness are completely different in this case, even if they overlap in occurrence. A question that the author raises in this chapter is, “do ‘happy endings’ occur when a film leaves its protagonist in a state of happiness?” In my opinion, I agree with James

Most scholars refer to as a male and female coming together in a romantic happy ending as a closed narrative. This is not to say that some of the greatest known films in cinema have narrative that end in such a manor. It is however easy to see an initial conflict evolve into a romance, thus disregarding the main conflict in general. We see this in the film Baby Driver (2017) by Edgar Wright. We are presented with such an intriguing conflict that falls behind the ‘happy ending’ trope. Such choices can make a story feel forced, unnatural or even lengthy in run-time. I do feel that it is true that our own familiarity with the final couple likely ensures that it is part of the rhetoric to an ending. In her short story “Happy Endings”, Margaret Atwood uses different literary techniques that can alter the interpretation of the story’s theme. The story starts off with a generic “fairy tale” ending in which a husband and a wife live a happy life together and eventually die. However, as the story progresses, Atwood’s style and tone makes the alternate scenarios of John and Mary give off a sense of uncertainty of what main ideas she is trying to convey. The Golden Age of Hollywood was a time when Hollywood hit its peak successfully and economically, starting with the late 1920s, and met its decline due to corruption in the late 1950s. One would ask the question: “Where did the name Hollywood come from?” The name came from Harvey Henderson Wilcox and his wife, Daeida, who were owners of a small ranch west of Los Angeles. According to u-s-history.com, “Daeida, who, while on a train trip east met a woman that described her country home in Ohio, that had been named for the Dutch settlement of Hollywood. Liking the name, Daeida christened their ranch 'Hollywood,' upon her return.” (History of Hollywood, California) Movies during this time period became a vital form of entertainment for all Americans during this time period. By the 1910s, Hollywood was combined into its neighboring city Los Angeles, and many motion-picture studios began to open. Moviemakers rushed to Hollywood, and competition started to become widespread between directors and producers. By 1910, the first motion picture was made in Hollywood, titled In Old California, and soon enough, Los Angeles became second to New York in producing films also because of it’s quintessential weather for movies to be made in all year long during this time. His life is changed drastically upon being convicted and being sent to prison. He is sent to prison to serve a life term. Over the 20-years in prison, Andy retains optimism and eventually earns the respect of his fellow inmates. He becomes friends with Red, and they both comfort and empathize with each other while in prison. The story has a strong message of hope, spirit, determination, courage, and desire.
How does one define happiness? For many people, this question makes people think what exactly it means to “be happy.” Many philosophers have different views on the definition of “happiness,” but one that strikes several scholars is Aristotle’s view on happiness. Aristotle believes that happiness is an activity of the soul in accordance with perfect virtue. This stems to another question, what is virtue? There are two types of virtues; intellectual and moral. Intellectual virtues engage in your mental capacity and moral virtues are the balance or imbalance of the morality of a moral decision. To achieve perfect virtue, moral virtue needs to have a balance, in which a feeling of emotion is rationale, with not too much or too little of that emotion (Aristotle, 11). Aristotle’s view of moral virtue is evident in several novels and films, but more noticeable in the classic film The Wizard of Oz. In the film, The Wizard of Oz, many characters experience feelings of emotion where they have too much, too little, and balanced feeling of emotion. All in all, several characters in the film The Wizard of Oz apply different feelings of an emotion, such as confidence, compassion, and courage throughout the story, resulting in showing Aristotle’s view of moral virtue as a plausible theory of a path to happiness.
Happy Endings is an oddly structured, metafictional story; a series of possible scenarios all leading the characters to the same ending. Atwood uses humour and practical wisdom to critique both romantic fiction and contemporary society, and to make the point that it is not the end that is important, it is the journey that truly matters in both life and writing.
I have also noticed the exact opposite pattern with people who watch feel good movies. It gives them motivation to strive for a life such as the ones they have seen, a goal perhaps. Indeed, the feel good movies may be oppressive in a sense people strive for unrealistic living, something that may not ever happen, but it is always comparatively better to strive for something and never reach it, than to never strive at all. That is why I love feel good movies.
In the story “Happy Endings” the author Margaret Atwood gives 6 scenarios in alphabetical order from A to F of how a couples life could play out over the span of their lives. In these six scenarios Atwood uses satire to emphasize how interchangeable and simple each couples life is. In this story Atwood uses character, style, and point of view to chastise the desire for the everyday common life and the concern for only the “whats” in life and not “how or why”.
Although the perfect ending seems stereotypical, it goes along with the story well and I would not want it any other way. People watch romantic comedies
