Sometimes they emerge a new, mature, and dedicated person or it could crush someone mentally and spiritually due to their experiences within the organization. Every fraternity and sorority is different. Contrary to popular belief hazing has not come to an end, and it is still implemented in hundreds of schools. There are different ways of hazing, which I think different cultures handle differently. Sororities haze by mentally and verbally abusing their pledges. I have friends that have been through the process and they have called me crying with stories about the degrading things that their “big sisters” said to them. I do know that in sororities they make a point of telling their pledges that they will tear them down to build them back up. The tearing down part consist of bullying and breaking the pledge down mentally, making her feel worthless, and then slowly they build them back up with compliments and sisterhood; so that the pledge realizes that she is a new woman due to her sorority and her sisters which is where the lifetime bonds come in at. Fraternities are built upon masculinity. It is a man’s game, and it is quite ignorant. Who can sleep with the most girls? Who can drink the most beers? Who can do the most push-ups? In addition, who can withstand the torture and abuse that it takes to be apart of the brotherhood? As I mentioned earlier, I believe that different cultures express their masculinity in different ways. Black men in the black community have no wriggle
Millicent is an average girl who no one really notices, when one day, a sorority group decides to allow her to join, but she must past their initiation test first. At first, Millicent is ecstatic, and proud that she can finally be a part of society, but slowing, and in the beginning
At the start of the new school year, Millicent Arnold, a typical teenage girl, receives an invitation to join the elite and exclusive girls’ sorority at Lansing High School. Before she becomes an official member however, Millicent must demonstrate she is fit to join the sorority by finishing the initiation process: a series of ridiculous and rigorous tasks that pushes her to her limits. During a mission, Millicent discovers the nasty truth and reality of the “prefect” sorority at her high school, and ultimately decides that being herself is most important and rejects entering the sorority altogether.
Many women admit that they in fact feel safer on their own turf because they are familiar with the house, they also have the say with what happens and can have more control. While many Sorority women feel perfectly safe going to parties in Fraternity homes, there are many that do not and many that would just like the option to host a party or have over male friends. She goes onto to concluding that Fraternities and institutions are not to blame but that it comes from the national chapters, that “Panhellenic must reframe these obsolete double standards to convey that Sorority women can, and should, act as independent community
Now, the universities’ and colleges of America are trying to clean up the act of sororities and fraternities’. But is coding really you going to help? By putting males and females causes real problem. Fraternities and sororities should not be coed is because it will not reduce the negative behaviors, but insure it and it will affect the colleges and universities in the long run.
To some fraternity and sorority chapters hazing may be a way of group bonding and teaching respect, it is not indispensable. Hazing has been going on for quite amount of time, and banning organization who haze will make other chapters want to inflict pain and humiliation to their own pledges. Not only does is lead to a physical and mental breakdown path, but it also weakens the students and strips them of their power. Studies have shown that there are in fact fraternity and sorority chapters who believe that hazing is unnecessary, degrading and view it as juvenile, do not haze their members and perform true Greek rituals. Those chapters reported to become popular on campuses and did not see a loss in member loyalty and respect (Lowery). Fraternity
“You quickly become what you surround yourself with.” This concept was a constant reminder my mother gave me when I moved off to college. As a senior, I find this advice to hold very true when I reflect on the organizations that I have been a part of. My sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, has had the biggest influence on not only my character, but my language as well. What first seemed like jargon has now become primary language. From learning new meanings for everyday vocabulary to different intonational patterns, my language has adapted to the environment that I have surrounded myself with for the past three years.
A continuation of blind adherence to tradition can be found in many college and university rituals. The longstanding tradition of pledging in a fraternity often involves activities that result in injuries and deaths. There are many
Greek organizations often play a role of boosting a college’s enrollment numbers, however roughly fifty-nine percent of greek organization members participate in illegal activities such as underage drinking (Caudill, BD et al 147). Another illegal activity that thirty-five percent of greek organization members participate in is the illicit use of psychostimulants (e.g. Adderall, Dexedrine and Ritalin) (Underhill & Langdon 8). A majority of the illegal activities participated in usually occur when potential members undergo hazing, a process that most greek organizations have adopted. All of the above activities have led to addiction, injuries, jail time and even death which are why fraternities and sororities should not come to the College of Coastal Georgia.
Greek Life, or the presence of fraternities and sororities, exists in many colleges and universities. According to Michael Grandillo in an Encyclopedia article, “there are more than 5,500 chapters on 800 campuses throughout the United States and Canada.” Although Greek Life is so common, participation in such organizations can be a controversial topic, particularly when critics suggest that hazing can be detrimental to students' health and college careers. For those who do not know much about Greek Life, or the process that one goes through to become affiliated with this system, there is first a week called “rush week,” where fraternities and sororities host parties in attempt to cajole students into joining their organizations. If members
The article that I have selected is about hazing and how it is heavily associated with greek fraternity and sororitys across the U.S. Hazing is the act of ‘‘any activity expected of someone that joins a group and has the potential to humiliates, degrades, abuses, comprise safety, or inflicts pain until its victims’’(Richardson, Wang, &Hill, 2012). Hazing as a form of initation into these fratertinities and sorriorites and the behavior is highly anticpitate and welcomed as for many it is look at as a form of handed down tradition. Which brings us to the theory of reasoned action and it having much to do with an individuals positive or negative feelings about performing a behavior. Many have taken on the mindset that if you are not
When their new next-door neighbors turn out to be a sorority even more debaucherous than the fraternity previously living there, Mac and Kelly team with their former enemy, Teddy, to bring the girls down.
Since the introduction of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 in the United States,
Hold a pre-meeting to inform committee members about the facts and review applicable Fraternity documents (Bylaws, Standing Rules and Policies). Clarify the role of the Standards Adviser, Leadership Consultant, Chapter Consultant, or other Fraternity visitor if present.

Hazing has been a hidden part of group initiation practices for a long time, but only recently has the issue of hazing been brought to the forefront on college campuses. When people hear the word hazing, they tend to think of fraternities and sororities because most media coverage about hazing involves these organizations. Greek life has been a staple at Cornell since the days of Andrew Dickson White, who was a strong promoter of fraternities as he believed they taught self-governance to young students. However, hazing also occurs on athletic teams and in different clubs and organizations.
