Chapter Four The Technology Upgrade Chapter four talks about upgrading technology. The books talk about educators adding technology into the classroom. Technology is being used to transform classrooms. Even though the use of technology is suggested or required from teachers some fail to reiterate it into their curriculum (Johnson,2012, pg.83). This is due to confusion or some being scared to try something new. Instead some stick to the familiar such as using technology for communicating with parents, recording grades and attendance. The lack of usage in technology sometimes has to do with lack of resources (Johnson,2012, pg.83). One way to learn how to use technology more is to add a “technology upgrade” to your usual activities. Activities such as lectures, student writing, student research, class discussions, math problems, plays and skits, and student speeches. These are just a few examples, use basic technology, spreadsheets, and software in which your students are already comfortable with to replace or enhance your traditional activities. Some benefits of upgrading technology are being able to teach in different learning styles for students (Johnson, …show more content…
Student projects that involve technology elements cannot be evaluated by paper and pencil tests, so the teacher's ability to create an assessment tool that clearly explains the desired level of technology skill is important. Developing a rubric or checklist of what is expected from students can improve the teacher's instruction. Technology can add to your assessment; make sure you describe what you want in concrete terms, use examples of previous quality work, and make sure the tools are given to students at the time when the assignment is given. In addition, use the assessment tool to help guide revisions, use different assessors, and revise your tools each time their used; too many indicators restrict creativity (Johnson,2012,
The use of technology in the classroom is an important tool to utilize as an educator. Technology allows for educators to have instant access to a plethora of resources that would not be available if technology was not used in the classroom. Teachers have the ability to plan lessons, create presentations, and have interactive games for students to use as a learning tool through the use of different digital devices. Modern day technology is rapidly advancing and providing teacher with many different tools to use in the classroom to enhance the students learning experience.
Technology of the past 20 years has become a focal point of teaching and learning. As a teacher, it is my job to facilitate the learning for an individual by creating an environment that not only conducive for learning, but also places the child in a position to discover and learn them for themselves. Technology has given teachers to opportunity to take learning beyond the classroom, and has begun to reshape their role in the learning process.
When the technology revolution started educational leaders believed that it was necessary to improve the use of technology in the classroom. They figured they could do this by the implementation of more resources. With technology being added to the classroom comes many benefits and a few downfalls. The main purpose for bringing technology into classrooms is to improve students and teachers learning schedules, skills, and capabilities. Another benefit schools are getting out of the use of technology is the money that they are saving. Schools should use technology in the classroom to further enhance students, teachers, and even the school in general.
Teachers can use technology within the classroom to assist with providing instructional guidance and education to students. However, the use of technology in the classroom has both its advantages and
Technology in the classroom is important for teachers, parents, and students alike, because technology use has become a necessary skill for survival in today’s vastly expanding technology driven global economy. Research has shown an increase in student’s success rates when exposed to technology in the classroom. Also technology has opened lines of communication between educators and parents to keep students on track, and help teachers educate better.
A big problem in getting the technology applied to our classrooms is teacher willingness. A teachers job is to teach his or her students to the best of their abilities; and as technology is becoming a better way to teach students, the teachers need to accept that technology is a better way of applying the material to the student. If a teacher is willing to apply that learning technology then the students also benefit from it.
There are so many avenues to experience by using technology from research to presentation. For example, the use of classroom-to-classroom video chatting, such as a debate between two classes on a particular subject, can help students learn in a quicker manner and help them understand the topic at a higher degree. The use of iPads early on in elementary school and the introduction to computers that many children don’t receive would be beneficial later on in life. In today’s society, technology is used extensively in the workforce. Having the proper up-to-date technology can help the student better succeed and stay on top of the growing world. Utilization of technology will now prepare students for a better future. Schools should provide more ways to use technology in order to prepare students for a better
Society is becoming more reliant upon technology every day. Technology is found in hospitals, banks, grocery stores, homes, and schools across the nation. As technology becomes more prevalent in the classroom, teachers need to learn how to use it effectively. Differentiating instruction, facilitating learning, enhancing communication, and facilitating instruction are all appropriate ways to use technology in the classroom (Standards for Teachers). Once these types of technology are mastered, student performance, creativity, and thirst for knowledge should begin to increase.
The biggest problem with today’s education is how rapid technology is advancing. So rapid, in fact, that schools are attempting to keep up, but are sadly falling short. Teachers are being required to incorporate new technology into their everyday methods of teaching. The use of IPads or laptops in classrooms can be helpful to both teachers and students(edreform online classes)”. If a teacher is not overly familiar with the new devices, then the students will lose what little time they have to learn. As a teacher is attempting to fix technical problems in one class, the class that has a tech savvy teacher will be advancing far ahead. On the other hand, if a classroom is full of students who are very unfamiliar with the technology will have to be taught how to operate it, which wastes valuable time. In today’s society technology usage is so much more widespread than it was just five years ago. The new toys can allow schools to broaden their curriculum. Since most work can be done on a single device, kids can work at their own pace and potentially reach heights they could never reach with book, pen, and paper. The benefits of this new tech greatly outweigh the downsides. The biggest problem with technology in classrooms is their lack of use. So few schools have jumped on board with these programs, and therefore are holding their kids back. These products are readily available, but “the use of new technology
In this article Terry Heick discusses the problems technology has caused in our classrooms. The first issue is the pace of change, he argues that not all schools can keep up with the rapidly changing technology, and that keeping technology in all classroom and updated is ultimately very costly. He thena argues that education is starting to lean more toward being online schooling and he strongly believes that it does not offer the same social or educational benefits of a regular school setting. These are a couple different points that i can utilize in order to explain how the introduction of technology is affecting students and teacher and how it is an issue overall.
Thesis Statement: The author elicits the idea that technology integrated into the classroom in many ways and forms regardless of financial restraints on districts is beneficial to the
The topic I am going to focus on throughout this paper is how education has changed over time. Over the many years of education changing, technology has had a great impact on how we learn and how teachers go about teaching. The three main topics I am going to focus on throughout this paper is how technology has taken over, what new teaching and learning styles we have, and whether or not technology has really helped with education.
Technology has dramatically influenced our modern day culture in several ways; we now operate completely different compared to the past. In fact, it can be shown in many tasks that we very rarely complete a simple operation without the use of technology. For example, washing dishes, heating food, doing our homework, and even communication are all examples of how technology has evolved simple tasks. Even furthermore, technology has changed the way education has been taught and received in American classrooms. However, technology was not always so highly advanced in American schools. In fact, a classroom in the 1950’s had little to no technology; one would find blackboards, chalk, handouts, and quite possibly a film-strip projector. However, even the “advancement” of a film-strip projector required much work, due to the fact that many teachers were obligated to travel great distances to retrieve a film-strip for the projector (Cuban, Larry). On the contrary, things have significantly changed in the 21st century American classroom. In truth, it is extremely common to see laptops, televisions, and other cutting-edge technology in a significant amount of today’s public schools. Although the evolution of technology within the classroom has created several conflicting ideas and opinions, technology is actually continuing to increase in classrooms every day and does not seem to decrease any time soon. Unsurprisingly, technology has drastically changed the way American classrooms
It is crucial that students are not just being educated in only one way. Each child is different; as a result, learning styles should be versatile and open to new strategies. By learning to use technology correctly, teachers are preparing themselves, and the students for the future by developing certain skills that will be essential in the 21st century. Besides developing the students’ technology skills, students will
Bernard John Poole wrote ten pillars of successful use of technology in the classroom. Throughout his paper, he continued speaking of the continuous training teachers would have to go through to “keep up with the new technology.” He also wrote about how parents would have to be equally involved in order to “promote student achievement through technological advances.” Matthew Lynch, a journalist for the Huffington Post, wrote an article on this paper. He ended the article by saying “Does the technology itself provide heightened experiences? I’d argue that it does not. Instead, the implementation of technology is a necessary move to keep students interested in subject matter.”
