On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine was sent to Havana harbor to protect U.S. interests during the Cuban revolt against Spain when she exploded suddenly, without warning, and sank quickly, killing nearly three quarters of her crew. While it is still, to this day, unknown as to how or why this battleship exploded, it is suspected Spain had some involvement. This incident is known to be the start of the Spanish American War, as well as the start of America becoming a world power. On top of the explosion of the USS Maine, America had other reasons for declaring war on Spain.
