There are many examples of heroes throughout history and in story books that convey great messages, but what makes your leaders heroes? There are many attributes that make a hero but there are three main areas. To be a hero, one must be willing to make many sacrifices, be humble and not expect anything from the actions, and make positive changes. To be a hero means to sacrifice something for someone else no matter the circumstances or dangers. An example of this is in the myth Theseus and the Minotaur. It gives a great example of sacrifice and heroism. Powerful king Minos of Crete demands Athenian women and men every year to feed to the Minotaur. When Theseus heard about this, he was not happy. He took the place of one of the sacrificed men and went to the labyrinth of the Minotaur to try and kill the beast himself. Theseus then expressed his feelings of frustration by saying saying, "When it is time to send the next tribute, I will go as one of them and I vow that it is the last time the Minotaur will be fed with the flesh of any of our people." Theseus was strong and was willing to put himself in danger for the safety of his people. Not many people have the courage to sacrifice themselves. Parents make sacrifices every day. Think of how hard mothers or fathers works to make money, to keep the kids happy, to feed them, to clean up after everyone, to get their kids where they what to go. My mom makes sacrifices everyday. She takes my brother dance right after a long
His bravery and fearlessness contributed to his significant victory. The word "boldly" in general is very important when thinking about Theseus's state of mind. It demonstrates how audacious he is and even suggests how powerful he is mentally and physically. Especially when Hamilton mentions how Theseus wrestles the beast and kills it with his own bare hands, without using any weapons at all to defeat the creature. Going up against any non-human entity in Greek Mythology was a challenge that no ordinary man could fulfill, but the fact that Theseus had the concentration and the enormous power to kill it with his own bare hands without any apprehension really demonstrates the value of being a courageous hero.
Sacrifices is a big part of being a hero, because for example in the article Soldier Home After Losing his Leg in Afghanistan it states “ On september 28, 2010, army pfv. Tristan Eugene Segers, a 2002 graduate of Lake Seven High School;, was driving his armored patrol vehicle when a homemade bomb exploded in the road underneath Segers floorboard, one of the vehicles 800 pound tires was found a half a mile away. Just below his knee, Segers right leg was gone” (Fiege). Tristan Eugene shows great acts of heroism because he was fighting for his country and he lost his leg, there for he sacrificed his leg to save his country. Although army men aren't the only one who make sacrifices in this world. For example our parents they make sacrifices everyday like say they want to buy something really expensive and nice for them but it would have to come out of grocery shopping money. They always sacrifice there things so we can have a roof over our heads and food on our
Theseus, the newly found prince of Athens, embarks on several hero journeys including on against Minos’ Minotaur and the Labyrinth. Joseph Campbell’s representation of the hero’s journey fully encompasses Theseus’ narrative throughout his quest to defeat the Minotaur. Beginning with a call to adventure on through the crossing of the threshold and on to the reward and resurrection. Compared to Rank’s hero’s journey which includes a revelation and transformation with atonement, Campbell’s process fits more precisely to Theseus’ story.
Myths consists of many legendary heroes within, but what makes them different from an ordinary person. Many convey that it is not very challenging to be a hero, but wise ones know the struggles of being a hero, which the texts “Theseus” and “The Adventure of Odysseus”, written in the book “Mythology” by Edith Hamilton proves. Heroes may require help from others, but more often than not, they are fearless fighters who do not need the aid of others to be successful. Heroes might easily gain credits for the work of their fellow allies, but that does not mean it is easy to be a hero. A true hero should not be afraid of pain or death just like the great legend Theseus. At the same time, these heroes must be like the extraordinary hero Odysseus, who is successful in his heroic journey.
What does it take to be a hero? When someone mentions a hero I think of a strong, good leader that knows how to keep a team together. He/She must be skillful and brave in order to follow through with their ‘quest’, they must be willing to put their lives at risk in order to do the good thing they are trying to accomplish. In the movie The Odyssey, our hero Odysseus is faced with many challenges, he is described as a man skillful in all ways, on his journey he does not lose courage and keeps his men under control. In the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? Everett Ulysses McGill he is our hero, he is the leader of 3 fugitives and goes through many challenges also to carry out his quest.
Heroes are inspirational figures in stories that relay relatable messages. Some of the most famous heroes include Harry Potter, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc. In greek mythology, Theseus, like Superman or Harry Potter, is also considered a hero. Theseus was the son of Poseidon who went to Athens to meet his supposed father, the king. In hopes of freeing him of his debt, he travels to Crete where Minos resided and killed the minotaur whom Aegeus was to feed 7 each of the most beautiful maidens and courageous men in his kingdom. Theseus is considered a hero for he possesses qualities of a hero and his/her journey. Theseus fits the hero archetype because he is clever, which means that he has situational intelligence; he is determined, which means that he is firmly set in opinion or purpose; and he has a supernatural helper, which is someone who aids the hero in his/her quest usually by providing them with a talisman or advice.
Finally, the Greek hero Theseus can be compared to the modern fictional Hero arrow through the final stage of the hero’s journey, which is the hero’s return. In the T.V. show, Arrow Oliver Queen returns to his home of starling city when he is eventually found on a remote island, which comes as a surprise to everyone in Starling City because he was presumed dead for many years. He turns into a vigilante and becomes known as the Arrow. He fights, to save his city from crime, and corruption using the skills he acquired on the island, and becomes known as a robin hood like figure by the people of Starling City, his return was fuelled by a desire to save his city. In Theseus’s return, he returns to the city of Athens where which is ruled by his
What makes a hero a real hero? We know what a hero is we know Batman, Superman, Iron man, Captain America, Wonder Woman, and even Wolverine. We also know our everyday heroes firefighters, police officers, medical personnel, and even political leaders. We also know all of our favorite book characters. Sometimes we even think of ancient heroes, great warriors of old, but have our expectations changed since then? After all we know some of these “heroes” just for slaughtering their enemies. Do we define these people as heroes just because we’ve always known them this way. When I think of the most important characteristics that a hero can possibly have, three traits come to mind, these are charisma, courage, and selflessness. Who better to put to the test with this list than the ancient greek hero Odysseus.
“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Personal sacrifice is a quality that makes a hero. A hero inaugurates change, inspires people, and can be idols to many. Heroes are people who give up something for the greater good disregarding the risks or the difficulties they will face on their way. Heroes are made up of selflessness, of risks, and the most important quality of a hero is sacrifice.
Throughout the history of epic literature, heroes have been an integral part of many different cultures. Some of these heroes are fierce and powerful, renowned for their skill in battle, while some others and clever and cunning, able to talk their way out of any difficult situation. These traits usually emphasize the values of the cultural from which the hero came, and depending on the culture, traits viewed as heroic may drastically differ. Although there exists a plethora of traits any one hero may have, there are three core characteristic that, in my opinion, a hero must have to be considered a hero: the courage to face hardships, the willingness to make major self-sacrifices for the benefit of others, and most importantly, the dedication to do what it takes to reach their goal.
Trust, a basis for human existence, is one of the first factors in betrayal. In order to be betrayed you first have to trust another individual enough to both not expect and be hurt by their actions (Harris). Throughout Greek Mythology, there are countless stories in which various people and gods struggle with betrayal. Many of these instances involve infidelity or abandonment by a lover, such as Aphrodite’s affair with Ares, the story of Theseus and Ariadne, or the story of Jason and Medea, but there are also those in which betrayal is based upon trust between family members, such as in the stories of Theseus, as well as those based on the trust of friends or acquaintances, such as Zeus and Prometheus. The stories of Theseus, for example,
To begin, women are assigned the role as a nurturer because of the culture’s perspective on the power of women. As the role of the nurturer is viewed as not important, it acquires a massive impact on the hero’s journey. In the myth of “Theseus and the Minotaur”, Theseus’s mother plays a big role in the development of the hero when “[she] took him outside the city, to a place where a great boulder la[id]” (O’Rahilly 1). In this case, Theseus’s mother is given the small role of the nurturer, taking care of the hero. Thus proving the irrelevance of the role. However, this small role has a massive impact on the hero himself. Without the mother looking over Theseus, he would not have known about the boulder which lead to his destiny. In addition,
A close analysis of the two stories shows that they were narrated in different point of view. The story of “The House of Asterion,” is narrated in the first person point of view and like many other stories, the narrator begins with a quote, “And the queen gave birth to a child called Asterion,” (Borges, 1). As the story continues the narrator talks about the accusations made against him which he denies and then follows with the description of his house. He continues on to argue how sad he is and that he is expecting to be freed by his redeemer. At this point the narrator shifts to a third person point of view and his voice changes; it is at this point the reader realizes that this story is a version of the myth of Minotaur. On the other hand, the story of “Theseus and the Minotaur,” the myth is narrated in a third person point
“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Campbell 1). When we think of heroes most of us think of movie stars or professional athletes, but it’s not always about your popularity or talent it can also be about how you help society. What I think make a great hero is someone who is able to overcome his or her obstacles in life, is highly motivated, and has plenty of bravery.
What does make a hero a hero? Is it there looks? Alternatively, maybe is it their personality? However, the question is what are those essential qualities that make one a hero? Different people require different heroes to look up to or try to emulate. However, whoever it may be, they all possess certain qualities. My hero is my mother, for the reason that she is selfless, compassion, and courage. That kind of selflessness can often be premeditated, since concentrating on others' needs often winds up helping one accomplish one’s own goals. However, a heroic leader does so without any anticipation of a return. The display and concern show the care one has for others. This can often apparent itself in strong but gentle actions planned to increase the lives of others. Courage and bravery come to mind first when we think of heroism. However, it is difficult to achieve anything truly heroic unless one is up against overwhelming chances. As Nelson Mandela put it, "Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it." These minor acts of heroism rarely attract any notice. A true hero is always sympathetic, benevolent and shows a great deal of compassion and sympathy to those poorly or in agony. He or she keeps away judgements; that are oriented to the self and embraces an attitude that serves others.
