Time Machine by H.G. Wells
Works Cited Missing In 1895, Victorian Britain was very much Great Britain- 'the workshop of the world.' Since the Industrial Revolution technological advancement had changed the face of the country (shape, structure and appearance). Heavy industry demanded fossil fuels and therefore there was a heavy demand for mine workers. Growing transport demands led to new roads being built. Life in 802,701 seemed very different to that of 1895, it was a time of easy going and a very laid back time. Everything about this time was different '

The Eloi live off a life of pleasure and are the over-landers, they are very small and fragile with a very weak character 'Their hair, which was uniformly curly came to a sharp end at the neck and cheek; there ears were singularly minute. The mouths were small, with bright red, rather thin lips, and the little chins ran to a point. The eyes were large and mild,' that was a quote from the book in which Wells describes the Eloi in a very detailed fashion.
The Morlocks were the masters of the land and these used to be the exploited labourers, they were the mine and factory workers who worked in appalling dark conditions. The Morlocks feed off of the Eloi which is a class of cannibalism, they have total control over the Eloi which is totally the opposite to when Wells wrote this book, the Morlocks, the workers, had no say in what went on all they were there to do was to work hard in appalling conditions. The Morlocks are ugly looking creatures and work underground in dark surroundings, they are subterranean beings and they have totally adapted to this environment, in the book Wells describes them as 'small, white moving creatures with large bright eyes' he says it looked like a 'human spider.' The Morlcoks eat the Eloi as that is there only source of food ' Clearly, at some time in the Long Ago of human decay the Morlocks food had run short. Possibly they had
* Workers wanted higher wages, 8 hour work day, and the right to collective bargaining (to negotiate on behalf of other members)
Overall, in the 1900s workdays were long, pay was small and workers were worked hard. Now, work days are shortened, the pay is higher, and working conditions are much more ideal.
The Working class that made up around 80% of society had little or no bargaining power with their employers resulting in the continuation of unfair working hours, bad wages, and unsanitary and hazardous working conditions. The workers could not even fight for their rights in the political system as only the rich were eligible to vote.
WIth the power going to their head, their attitude reflected their beliefs that employers were on a higher level that their workers in every way. So they had a strong distaste towards their employees banning together against them because they were challenging their superiority. Many employers gave them an ultimatum, either you sign a contract similar to the Western Union Telegraph Company’s, promising you wouldn’t have any affiliation with the unions, or you lost your job (Document E). In 1883, in a testimony before the Senate Committee on Labor and Capital, a machinist said that "100 men are able to do now what it took 300 or 400 men to do fifteen years ago" in trying to explain his insignificance to the company he worked for (Document D). Due to the fact that they indeed did not necessarily need as many men as they did in the past, employers had no problem firing them if their protests went too
went on strikes. Although the workers had created many strikes and labor unions, they were at the least
If the government would have stepped in and made laws protecting these people, then the relationship between employees and employers would have been pleasing to both sides. Improving the economy, this would have prevented many strikes, riots, and disputes. Such as the Pullman Strike, it was a nasty act of violence that affected the economy by creating negative views on large companies (Document E). Strikers wrote strong letters using statements like, “We struck at Pullman because we were without hope” (Document E). They did this to convey that it was their last resort to convince upper management for realistic hours, work conditions, and wages. The relationship between the two sides influenced economy in a negative way that could have been averted with a government that took action instead of letting it get out of
During this era of American History, workers were not being paid enough to live even a remotely normal lifestyle. In 1866, the Knights of Labor attempted to put an end to this. A group of mostly African Americans met in Louisiana and decided they were going to riot in hopes of a dollar-a-day wage. Ten thousand sugar workers went on strike hoping change, but ended up being shot at by local militia. The militia was assigned to put an end to the riots and ended up killing more than 30 people and wounded a hundred more. The situation was described in a Louisiana Newspaper as, “Citizens of the United States killed by a mob directed by a State judge... Laboring men seeking an advance in wages, treated as if they were dogs!” Stunned by what had happened, the surviving rioter fled to the forest in search of a safe environment. This event shows that the sugar business did not care about their workers and if they forced their employees to live in poverty. However, in the scheme of things, this event should have never happened. If
Strikers were blacklisted and put on a do not hire list to prevent them from working again The aftermath of this even was to create the National Guard, whose main purpose is to enforce order at home and protect Americans against foreign threats
The West Virginia brakemen started the upheaval by uncoupling cars, blocking railroads, suspending the intercourse of travel and business on some of the great trunk lines of the country and announcing that no freight trains would be allowed to travel until their wages were reinstated to the normal rate.5 The workmen in Pittsburgh and Chicago, St. Louis and San Francisco also joined them. Moreover, both working class and middle class people from the Martinsburg community who bore no wage relation to the railroad company also showed support by gathering at the town depot to prevent the arrest of strikers by police.7 Violence came with the strike as the workers destroyed more than $2 million worth of railroad property and the militia also fired on the crowds, killing more than 20 people. Furthermore, because the strike was already defined as “insurrection”, and that the “bloody conflict” was too much for the militia, they asked for help and involved federal troops and the army – ensuing further
Therefore the strikes may have hurt them then, but later on it helped the workers with wages, safety, and rights. Most workers lost their
The Haymarket Riot was an opportunity for the people to fight for what they believe but the police tried to stop that . A bomb was thrown in a crowd of officers because they wanted less working hours. So the people throw a bomb to make sure that they could get what they want but it backfired on them. McCormick Reaper Works hired new and untrained people to take their places in the company that was not from the same union as the past workers.
adamantly opposed any recognition of the union. Thus, the union members decided to strike over wages, safety
H.G. Wells, author of mind blowing novel The War of The Worlds, used foreshadowing and both external and internal conflicts to show the theme those humans should not assume that they are the superior race. Wells was the author of more than 100 books, almost half of them nonfiction, published over a span of 52 years.
The Theme of Humanity in the Time Machine H.G Wells was born in Bromley Kent on the 21st September 1866. He had attended school called Midhurst Grammar in 1883, soon after he had gone to the normal school of science in London. There he had learned biology, which could lead to why he had written science fiction novels. He had left the school without the qualifications to become a writer. He began his career as a writer in 1893 and then continued to create stories, such as the Time Machine.
People have often thought of going back in time because of regrets or mistakes they want to fix in the past. The only way to go to the past is time travel there. Time travel has been know as science fiction but now scientist have been believing time travel is possible based on the physics laws. If time travel is possible, then will it be helpful for human begins to go back to the past. Time travel can’t be worth it because if you change something in the past, it will affect a lot in your future. The people you thought you knew may not be the same people in the future because you change something in the past. There are different theories stating on that there may be parallel universe and other versions of us.
