Unchained Book Report

J.T. – is a male African – American sixteen-year-old who always gets in trouble. He is a good-looking guy and is great at playing basketball. J.T. tries his best to take care of his mother without causing more trouble for others. He has had a bad history; however, he seems to have learned from his mistakes and is now working for a better future. In the story, he felt very sad for having to fight Peaches and promises to repay her for her help with his mother.

Unwind is a book filled with three main characters who are escaping their “fate” of being unwound. Unwinding is a process in which every part of a child between the ages thirteen to eighteen is removed and donated to others in need of a healthy limb or organ. Connor is one of the main characters, he found out that he was going to be unwound because he found a bill his parent’s paid to go to the Bahamas, without him. He decides to rebel against his destiny and runs away from home, encountering some other characters and conflicts along the way.

The book Unwind by Neal Shusterman was about a future dystopian society that unwinds, or dismembers, teenagers between the ages of thirteen and eighteen. The act of unwinding leads to many of the unwinds to contemplate what life actually is and who they are in life. This is something I liked from the book; I like how Shusterman portrayed the thoughts of the many unwinds and how he was able to connect how they felt with how teenagers today feel. Connor Lassiter is paired with other boys in a crate to travel to the Graveyard, leading to the conversation of whether souls exist and how they work:

He showed courage because in school during a test, T.J was cheating and when the teacher started to walk around the room, he placed the cheat notes by Stacey’s desk, and then Stacey’s mom walked by his desk because she was the teacher and saw the cheat notes. He told her he didn’t know where they came from, but he still took the blame and got whipped in front of the whole class. Another act of courage that Stacey took was when Papa, Mr. Morrison and him went to vicksburg to get the stuff they needed, and when papa got shot and ran over, he helped get him back home. The last act of courage he did was when T.J. was is trouble, he sent cassie and the others to go get papa and Mr. Morrison, and stayed to see if there was anything he could do to help. He was very courageous because of all the racism and Segregation going on, people who fought back would be punished, and Stacey was very courageous because he was just a kid and for him to fight back and risked getting killed is very courageous of

In this book, T.J is seen as dishonest for many reasons. He cheats on homework and tests, blames things on his brother, and steals from the Barnett store. He was held back into the seventh grade again, and now he has Stacey Logan’s mom for a teacher. With Stacey being his “best friend,” T.J tries to get all the answers to the tests.

An example of TJ being disloyal is when he blames Claude, his younger brother, near the beginning of the story for going to the Wallace’s store and so Claude got beaten up by his mom rather than TJ for no reason! This tells me that TJ is untrustworthy because he turns on his own family, just to paint himself in a good way and when doesn’t get his way, he blames others for his fault. Another example of him being disloyal is when he got caught cheating during the final exams, he went to the Wallaces, owners of the infamous Wallace store known for being discriminatory toward blacks, and told them that the teacher, Mama, who was the mother of the Logan family, she “...didn’t know nothing and wasn’t even teaching what she was s’posed to.”, and ended up getting her fired when it was only because he was displeased when he found out that he got caught.This shows TJ’s inability to be trusted because he betrayed his friends family and he clearly shows an absence of devotion to both support his grades and

From Taj’s naughty childhood to the extraordinary man he became, there were many factors along the way such as friends and family that, helped him to become who he is today. All things happen for a reason and that is definitely the case for Taj Rowhlend.

The two characters both have different personalities. For example, "Stacey is blamed for cheating; he doesn't tell the teacher whose cheat notes she caught him with." (Character Foil) This shows the difference between Stacy and T.J., T.J is very lazy he doesn't like to study or even work hard. Stacy, on the other hand, is very committed and is hard working, he didn't blame the cheat notes on T.J because T.J is his friend. In addition, "Stacey tells mom that he went to the Wallace store to find T.J." (Character Foil) This explains that, even after Stacy did something really bad, he confessed it to his mother because he had guilt in what he did. T.J has gone to the Wallace store many times, he has disobeyed his parents many times but he never

Stacey and T.J have a lot of differences and contrast between their lifestyles, and their behaviour in the story. Stacey is a thirteen year old boy who acts as an adult and a child, and isn't so happy for this school year because his mother is the teacher. T.J is an oblivious thirteen year old troublemaker whose parents are sharecroppers for a man named Harlan granger, and brings lots of trouble to the Logan family in the story . They each are good friends, but in the middle of the book they start to have some issues with trusting each other. Stacey and T.J have many differences and contrast in the story that makes them unique from one being a troublemaker and a responsible person.

T.J. blames Mrs. Logan’s teaching skills for his failure though it was his own lack of effort. His behavior leads to mama getting fired. Another event is when the Simms Brothers beat up TJ. He goes to Stacy's house because he is scared and hurt and he knows Stacey would help him. Even though he betrayed the Logans, Stacy takes him home to make sure he is safe.

Put yourself in the shoes of the person you are hurting. How would you feel if you were constantly mistreated? If you feel the need to attack someone, think about what you are doing. Try to find a healthier way to release your emotions. You do not need to join a gang to feel accepted or protected. By joining a gang, you give up your individuality and freedom because they will control your life. Once you are in a gang, there is no guarantee you will get out. There are many safe places and people you can go to if you isolated or victimized. An act of vengeance or coercion will not make things better for you. It will only make things worse. From shooting squirrels to trying to run to Alaska, Tobias Wolff makes his memoir, This Boy’s Life, a truly captivating, and meaningful book. The book stars Toby Wolff a young boy, who struggles through his childhood and young adult years. Due to an unstable home life, and a variety of character flaws, Toby has a rough time doing what is ethically right, which often leads him meeting trouble later down the road, and throughout the book, he often makes seemingly erratic and irrational decisions that leave us all wandering. Even though Toby struggles and makes a plethora of mistakes throughout the memoir, his grit, persuasion, and unique perspective of the world, could work in his favor, if he chooses to clean up his act, illustrating that even the most unethical people have positive qualities.
