If I were the current CEO for the United States Postal Service, I would be gravely concerned about the future of my business, as it has recently taken a steep plummet from its success and popularity in the 19th and 20th centuries. The USPS is now faced with the decision to renovate itself due to the extreme loss of business as technology takes over the 21st Century. Some say that the USPS should be entirely reconstructed because the business is only headed further downhill, while others say that paper mail is still very practical, more so than e-mail, and we must each write more letters to do our part in reviving the business to profitability again. Especially in urban cities buzzing with the latest technology, many would agree that, “you don’t need a full-service post office every few blocks in New York, for example” (Source A). In addition, I spend every summer with my dad in Chicago, and because there is a USPS post office right around the corner of our apartment building, I have noticed from passing it every day that it is the one store on State Street that is empty 90 percent of the time. In my experience, Postmaster General John Potter is correct in wanting to “close and consolidate 154 post offices”, significantly reducing operating costs and employment. Strategy is key; by shutting down the offices with the lowest production and necessity, USPS will no longer be uselessly spending money.
Another point the USPS should take into consideration when restructuring, is that it is too easy for most Americans nowadays to forget the significance of a hand written letter or card, when we can communicate within seconds through technology. Come to think of it, I remember running to the mailbox in excitement every November to collect a special, pink birthday card from my grandma with her messy cursive scrawled across the envelope. Now, my “special” birthday wishes are in a 30 second voicemail she leaves from her cell phone every year. The USPS must remind us of the significant difference it can make in communication by recapturing its emotional importance through advertising.
In July 2009, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) listed the budget of the United States Postal Service as “high risk” and recommended oversight from Congress and the Executive Branch. Specifically, the GAO stated that “Amid challenging economic conditions and a changing business environment, USPS is facing a deteriorating financial situation in which it does not expect to cover its expenses and financial obligations in fiscal years 2009 and 2010” (“Restructuring”, 2009, pg. 1). O Henry's "A Caballero's Way" features people's interest for a postal service in order to get to its needs. People's interest goes back when the Cisko Kid was around in the Valley. Unfortunately back then there was a horrible postal service. Poor Tonia that sent that letter to the Lieutenant Sandridge in regards of the Cisko kid. Back then she could not send it to an actual true and known service, instead she had to send to some ordinary kid not an expert on the system. The only thing is that the Post Office is loosing money instead of making money. The internet began to have an effect almost as soon as Americans went online. Between 1998 and 2002 the pieces of first class mail dropped from 54.3 billion to 49 billion pieces. This has only continued to accelerate over the years. In 2004 the Postal Service delivered 48 billion pieces of first class mail and in 2008 they delivered 39 billion pieces. (Kamarck, Para 5). The United States Postal Service (USPS) is a multifaceted firm. Its main goal is to create a web of communication between households, businesses and other organizations’ in the United States. This kind of service provides the foundation on which USPS sets its top priorities; customer value. Despite the fact that in today’s society, many people communicate through e-mail, telephone or social media, there are still quite a few people who don’t have access to these services or simply prefer the old way of communicating; with paper and pen. Therefore, USPS prides itself to always have specialized services for everyone, individuals that rely on the classic services of the postal service and individuals who enjoy keeping up with technology.

The United States Postal Service opened their doors and started to serve the community on July 1, 1971. Their main goal was to provide an easier way to communicate with people around the world at a promising rate. The post office has fulfilled their obligations to the community, but due to the more efficient ways of communication, the need for the post office services has drastically gone down.
