WNBA vs. NBA In the sports world, there are many competitive sports between men and women. Players compete to find out who play better men or women. Most men think that they are the best at any and everything but is that actually true. The most competitive sport of all is basketball. The WNBA and NBA both have similarities such as dribbling and shooting technique; however, some people believe that men can play basketball better than women. Basketball size differentiation can be a big deal when it comes to the WNBA and NBA. In the NBA the ball size ranges from 29 ½ inches to 30 inches. “Women’s hands are smaller than men’s on average, so it’s easier for the women to handle

That gives the women an extra six seconds to get the ball in the hoop. Women normally do not move as fast as men but they still have to use force and energy to get down the court. Men are better than women in the shot clock timing range. The WNBA and NBA both have salary wages but are they of equal pay? NBA players make way more money than a WNBA player. It shouldn’t matter about gender. The NBA makes , more money at a single game so they can afford a higher budget to pay the athletes more money. They make more money due to an higher popularity rate than a women’s game. “An average NBA athlete makes 5.15 million dollars a year and the NBA itself makes up to five billion dollars a season.” ("Gender, 2014) That’s a lot of money compared to what the WNBA accounts for in a year. “An average WNBA athlete makes an average of 72,000 dollars a year.”("Gender, 2014”) That’s no money compared to what an NBA athlete makes a year. Popularity can be a big factor in the athletes pay for the women because less people attend a women’s game and they can’t really afford to pay the women. Is gender really a factor in this situation or is it popularity? “The WNBA itself makes on average one million dollars a year.” ("Gender, 2014”) What is the difference between a female athlete and a male athlete? The difference is popularity. More people attend a NBA game then a WNBA, so therefore more money will be …show more content…
So who’s really better men or women? It’s all up to someone’s choice but I have to say that women are better due to certain statistics shown throughout the essay. Everyone will all have a different viewpoint based on their preference of athletes. However, I believe that a woman can do anything a man can do regardless if it sports or an occupation. It doesn’t matter if someone likes the WNBA better or the NBA better they are both great sports and they both have great athletes.

On June 21 of 1997 at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Sparks’ guard Penny Toler scored the league’s first basket at 19:01 during the first WNBA game between the New York Liberty and the Los Angeles Sparks. The New
People all over America and the world are consumed with watching athletes perform in their various sports. Both male and female athletes compete at such incredible levels that require physical talent and drive. Professional athletes are known to get paid salaries that reflect their talent and abilities. Regardless of gender, professional athletes are drafted to receive professional pay. However, equal pay for male and female athletes with the same credentials does not occur today. There is a belief that male athletes are worth more than female athletes and are better at promoting themselves. Also, women salaries are lower because of their gender and are not
Traditionally men have dominated the world of sports however in recent year’s women’s sports have become popular and with their new found popularity, women’s sports have evolved into marketable leagues of their own. Although women’s sports took a huge leap forward, women players still don’t receive the same financial compensation for playing the same sports in the same arenas as their male counterparts. In Purse Snatching by Donna Lopiano, she points out sexism may have a huge effect on this financial discrepancy between women and men athletes. Analyzing sports economics may point to a different reason why women are receiving such a compensation disparity.
However, it does not make sense that one should be more popular than the other, even though it is the same sport. The style is different, but talking to many others they all say that women's basketball is more calm and is played more fluently, which is easier to follow. Unlike men's basketball, which is not run with plays. For some other teams, the women draw bigger crowds than the men, for example Tennessee's Lady Volunteers regularly sell out and often draw bigger crowds than the men's team. But other teams are equal, such as Connecticut's Lady Huskies. They draw sell-out crowds, just like the men's team. While this is college basketball, it is still the difference between men’s and women’s basketball. Popularity counts can still be raised for the WNBA if they would sponsor them as much as they sponsor the NBA. Unlike the NBA the WNBA is not sponsored much, which can cause them to not have big crowns like the NBA. So since they are not sponsored as much, of course they will not draw big
NBA has best of seven and the WNBA has the best of five in the playoff why is it lesser in league at least can they be even in both NBA and WNBA games in playoffs because there a whole difference in the regular season. So I wonder what if the WNBA has the best of seven that would have been excited to watch. It's like the NBA never stop like when the season over its ready to start back just like that , but When the WNBA season end it feel like it forever to start back. An NBA season starts in October and end in April and the WNBA season starts on May and end in September. The more games thats played is probably the amount of money a player get if there not on contract or free
On April 24, 1996, women’s basketball announced “We Got Next” as the NBA Board of Governors approved the concept of a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) to begin in June 1997. Since that day in 1996 there have been many firsts for the WNBA: Val Ackerman -- the first president of the WNBA; Sheryl Swoopes -- the first player signed to the WNBA; Cynthia Cooper -- the league’s first Most Valuable Player; the Houston Comets -- the first WNBA Champions; Lisa Leslie -- the first WNBA player to capture all three MVP awards (regular season, All-Star and Championship) in one season.
Everyone knows of the famous sports organizations known as the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) and the NBA (National Basketball Association. While these organizations represent the same sport, there are many differences between them.
There is the idea that the WNBA is less exciting than the NBA due to the lack of dunking. The dunk, or the “alley-oop” (lob to the dunk) has become an intricate part of the men’s game but it is not so often used in the woman’s. While the average NBA player stands at about 6’3”, the average WNBA player is only about 5’10”. With this in mind, almost every single NBA player is able to
The gender wage gap in professional sports is much higher than most people think and it’s not going to end anytime soon. Women make half of what the Men make, if not less. In the NBA, the average salary is $4,500,000.00 and in the WNBA the average salary is $72,000.00. In the professional basketball aspect, WNBA players earn 4,428,000.00 less, or not even 2 percent of what NBA players earn. In the 2014-15 NBA season, the highest paid athlete, Kobe Bryant, made $23,500,000.00 and in 2013, the highest paid WNBA player was only paid 107,000.00, but that salary can only be reached after so many years of playing in the league (a-look-at).
Another major distinction between the two leagues is that there are only two conferences and a total of 14 teams in the WNBA but there are two conferences with 3 teams in the NBA. One similarity between the NBA and the WNBA is that the rules for both are governed by standard basketball rules except for ball size and the distance of the three-point line from the basket. The only other significant difference in the rules of the game between the NBA and WNBA is the fact that in women 's basketball there is no block or charge arc located under the basket. It is likely that as it matures, the WNBA will make additional changes to its rules and style of play meant to create more parity with the NBA. WNBA The rise in popularity of women 's basketball has led to the creation of the Women 's National Basketball Association (WNBA) in contrast to the Men 's National Basketball Association (NBA). There are many other differences between Men 's and Women 's basketball. The NBA season includes 82 games whereas the WNBA season includes only 34 games. Another difference that demonstrates the impact of gender in creating differences between the NBA and the WNBA is the size of the basketball. Despite the fact that both women 's and men 's basketball seems similar at first glance, there are significant differences between them. NBA vs. Some of the differences between NBA basketball and WNBA basketball appear to be
Female athletes are discriminated against in modern sports because they have lower salaries than the male athletes. Over the years the wage gap between male and female athletes has increased tremendously. The wage gap that has been viewed as one of the most extraordinary is the gap between men and women basketball players. An article by David Berri talks about this outrageous money difference. Diana Taurasi plays a big part in the Women’s National Basketball Association, especially being the one that led the Phoenix Mercury to win the league championship in 2014. Taurasi was
Attention Getter: “I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a Baller, I wish I had a girl who looked good I would call her.” That timeless phrase coined by Ski-Lo in the early nineties, resonates with so many of us because all of those goals are things that people relate to being successful. And while I can’t help you with the first and the last respectively, becoming a “Basket-baller” is quite feasible, with a little hard work.
Women’s equality is an issue that has been around for awhile. While women have been given many rights to increase equality, including the right to vote and go to college, the problem hasn’t completely vanished. One area that still sees this is in sports. Women’s sports do not draw nearly as many fans and are not covered in the media as much as men’s sports, pay differences between male and female athletes are large, and female athletes have to wait longer to start their professional career than men, which risks their professional career before it even starts.
Duru starts his article by introducing three WNBA players who were the top picks in the draft in 2013: Brittney Griner, Elena Delle Donne, and Skylar Diggins. All three were very talented players who were being recruited by college coaches when they were younger, and appeared to be ready for the WNBA after one year of college basketball. While men their age were entering the NBA draft, the three women could not enter the WNBA draft because of the age eligibility rules. While a man can enter the NBA one year after high school, a woman can not enter the WNBA until four years after high school. Duru states that while his article discusses
It isn’t just racial inequality that continues to exist and squander sports, moreover, gender inequality continues to demolish our shared collaboration to play sports for, in simplest terms, the pure love of them. When people say, “The World Cup” they generally mean the male world cup, and a lot of sports stations don’t even televise the female equivalent. There is also the sheer fact that the WNBA isn’t nearly as popularized
