Prior to the start of WRT-382, I had put little thought into my resume and cover letter. I didn’t realize that hiring employers spend less than a minute on each applicant’s resumes. I understand now that there has to be a clear and consistent theme to market and brand yourself. I also know now that having a skimable resume can make you seem more appealing than others even if they are more qualified. After learning about the components of a professional portfolio, I have learned how to condense my qualifications while modifying them to the specific employer.
The first piece of my portfolio is my resume. The original copy of my resume lacked a branding statement and did not have a summary of qualifications. I learned through the process that
My portfolio would consist of three documents: my cover letter, a table contents, and my resume. Each file must be specific to my field in order to show the prospective employer what I am capable of doing. My resume will be a concise summary of my past work experience, education, certificates, references, and skills I hold personally along with my character. The table of contents will make it very easy for the prospective employer to navigate through the portfolio and find my information, while noticing my good organization skills. My cover letter is just a brief summary of what i have done to work my way into the medical field, my past work experience, and what i hope to achieve while working as a medical assistant.
While building my resume, I learned that creating a positive image depends on whether I present a well-prepared and written resume. I also learned that my resume should be structured in a way that is well-organized and well written to show my personal positive attributes. Therefore, I put my areas of expertise at the top. Some employers don’t have the time to search for expert areas in a 3-page resume.

My artifacts for this assignment are “Thomas-Kilmann Instrument” for conflict management, “Observer feedback sheet” I received from my colleague after the oral presentation that I gave in class and “The Competent Communicator graphic” provided by our instructor Amanda Le Rougetel. My reason behind using these documents as artifacts because these documents reflect my personality as a communicator. These documents made me realize on which parts of my communication style I have to work to become a competent communicator.
The first assignment as a part of CIU111, is to build an online presence, or more specifically a portfolio website. Such a website is designed to showcase one's work, skills, and inclinations, and is a factor that is regularly taken into consideration by hiring managers (Smith, 2013). And being as I am, a film student, on the path towards entering a market as competitive as the creative industry, a portfolio becomes all the more important when marketing yourself to prospective employers.
Coaching candidates can use several useful tactics when seeking jobs, which are available in many settings and should build the foundation for their career with experience. A professional cover letter and resume are an important, but small, part of securing the position. Networking with peers can help you launch your career, while your social media presence can influence hiring managers in the modern job market, which is expanding beyond geographical boarders.

Importance is placed on drawing attention to key skills and qualifications that an employee possesses (Gantner, 2010). Potential employees that have gaps in their work history use functional resumes to showcase potential skills while relating experiences using those skills as an advantage in gaining employment. According to Cardon (2013), professionals with more than 15 years of experience or potential employees with little work experience benefit most by creating functional resumes. Components of functional resumes are the name block, summary of qualifications or career summary, skills, and additional information. Although a functional resume is most beneficial to potential employees with a vast amount of work experience, even individuals with key skills from school, community, or volunteer activities may benefit from this resume
