The minimum educational requirement for most jobs in Canada is a high school education. Aside from students who fall within the average age demographics attending high school, older individuals with a completed high school diploma alone will have a considerably difficult time finding a job in comparison to individuals who pursue a university or college degree. The jobs that these individuals may acquire are likely to be paying minimum wage or below. Wages however, can differ for individuals with a high school diploma alone, if they are considered to be professionals in the skilled trade field of work. The level of education required to pursue these careers is subjective to the position that is to be held by an individual. This explores the notion of having a lower education, yet being considered a professional. The knowledge learned from another source, begins to question the reason behind why companies are screening individuals based on education. Intelligence stems further than academics-that the means to gain knowledge are available through many sources. An educational institution is not the only method in gaining knowledge. The decision to have students decide what level of education they will go to pursue is a suggestive notion in determining where they may end up in the future. Intelligence quotient-also known as IQ-is the measure of the mind's ability to retain and interpret analytical facts. Educational institutes are largely conditioned to determine what the IQ score of a person is through standardized testing. These forms of testing are commonly focused on a person’s ability in short-term memory, analytical thinking, mathematical ability and spatial recognition. The standardized testing used in educational institute only accounts for a certain percentage of their actual IQ level. A person’s IQ proves how intelligent a person is, respective to the many forms of of acquiring knowledge-work experience, project experience, using the internet. A longitudinal studies found that there is a positive moderate correlation (.51) between IQ at 12 years of age and occupational level and a slightly higher correlation (.53) between IQ at 12-year-old and income (.53) aged 40-50. (Judge, Higgins, Thoresen, Barrick, 1999) Thus, we can see that IQ level plays a significant role on work related outcomes from this empirical study. In addition, another study found that IQ level has a low correlation (.23) with performance within low complexity jobs whereas IQ has a strong correlation (.58) with performance in high complexity jobs. (Hunter & Hunter, 1984; See Schmidt & Hunter, 2004 for an overview) To put it another way, high intelligence is not essential for low complexity jobs, for example, waiter and cleaner does not require high IQ. Starting in kindergarten, they are asked what they want to be when they grow up, which is usually limited to the options of astronaut, doctor, police officer, fireman, or veterinarian. In his essay, “Preparing Minds for Markets,” Jonathan Kozol addresses the issue of limiting people’s options at a very young age, often based on their race. He uses the phrase “school-to-work” to refer to the goal of schools that do not promote the pursuit of higher education and instead prepare their students to enter the corporate world immediately after they reach their minimum education requirement (Kozol 307). The articles “Blue-Collar Brilliance” written by Mike Rose and “Are Too Many People Going to College?” by Charles Murray discuss the importance of education and its outcomes. Both authors talk about people’s careers on the aspect of whether a college degree made them succeed in life or it is just an expensive waste of time. Also, each article has its own opinion over the fact that some people with college education aren’t able to find jobs while others with no college background are able to succeed. Rose and Murray, both agreed on the idea that college isn’t for all just simply because of its cost, and how each person’s intelligence does not depend on their acceptance to a college; further, both authors also acknowledge the importance of blue-collar workers and their prosperity.

Due to a long history, of sexism and misogyny in many aspects of Canadian society, outdated behaviours and thoughts have prevailed in many aspects of society. Our society has the belief that women have always been portrayed as weak, emotional, and powerless.
