Sustainability Practices: Recycling

Single stream recycling
Single stream recycling allows customers to mix recyclable paper, plastic, metal and glass in one large bin, rather than sorting these items into separate smaller bins. These mixed materials are then sorted at Waste Management Facilities. This type of recycling has led to: an increased amount of material collected by an average of 40 percent, save 0.901 metric tons of greenhouse gases per ton of recyclables collected, and improves on-the-job safety for waste collection workers by reducing job-related injuries.
Electronics recycled for reprocessing
Waste Management operates several household product recovery businesses, by consolidating them under one organizational umbrella called the Product Recovery Group. The Product Recovery Group now includes the following:
