1. Differentiate between sensation and perception. Explain the importance of separating these concepts. The differences between sensation and perception is that sensation is the elementary elements that, according to structuralist, combine to create perception. Whereas, perception is the conscious sensory experience (Goldstein, 2014). This student has always looked at sensations as those things in a persons’s environment that one can see, hear, smell, touch, taste, and feel. On the other hand perception is how a person’s brain will interpret what is seen, heard, smelt, felt, or touched.
The term sensation is used when referencing the process of sensing the environment through taste, touch, sound, smell, and sight (Goldstein, 2014). Moreover, it is the process that occurs once the sensory receptor experiences stimulation, which in turn produces nerve impulses that are sent to the brain to be processed in its raw form, then perception comes into play (Goldstein, 2014). Perception is used to describe the way people interpret these sensations and tries to make sense of everything around them on a daily basis. Perception is the occurrences of the brain

Kelly McGonigal defines willpower as choosing what matters and willing to agree with your values and goals even when some part of you doesn’t want to. Additionally, willpower is defined as the ability both to remember what matters most and the willingness to do things that support those goals even when self-doubt is present. She adds that there are three forms of willpower, I will, the willingness to continue when tired or bored, I won’t, the ability to resist and I want, the sense of what your morals are. Research reveals that we have limited willpower; it is possible to run out of willpower if you use it up. Kelly McGonigal is skeptical of this research, she believes what is limited is the ability to force ourselves to do things we don’t
On page 62, it says, “The sooner you look for the good, the sooner you will find it.” Everyone struggles when bad things happen to them, but trying to find a positive in those negative times is what really makes a difference. I always try to stay positive, but now that I know how important that really is, I’ll try even more.
Although, there is a hard line between the right amount of strength to lend and an damaging amount. Analyzing my narrative I took on the character of Frederick Douglas, because he knows what it is like to be alone, weak, and in need of survival tactics against the cruel world. Towards the end I incorporated the word “strategies because he had survival methods such as faith, strong optimism, and a strong love for his people. He stood as an influential figure for others, but he also had his moments of weakness. He grieved and felt as if there was no more hope. Although, he never let his dismal thoughts over power the faith he had in being liberated. Life has been hard, but I used that imaginary strength as a protection against everything that has happened. My counselor was correct in a point that not many people would be here if they lived the life I have been able to live, but there’s no point in giving up. It’s cliche, but everything happens for a reason. I wasn’t supposed to live through my car accident, but I did, I needed to feel sorrow so that I can appreciate my happiness, and I need to have my heartbroken so I can truly love someone someday. Without every aspect of my life, I wouldn’t understand how precious life is and how grateful I am to still be here. My goal in life is to make sure that no one has to feel the pain that I have felt, and with that their happiness brings me
My chosen prompt for the literary analysis is writing prompt number four and the first sentence is – “In some stories, characters come into conflict with the culture in which they live.” Conflicts with culture acceptance issues appear to interest me to understand one’s struggle to adjust to fit, belong or just survive. How difference in cultures can create hate, discord, social and economic class and alienate individual’s producing long-term results of self-esteem problems. These self-esteem problems can lead to substance abuse because of society’s standards and preconceived assumptions and judgmental opinions.

Under the Microscope: “What is the threat? For your willpower challenge, identify the inner impulse that needs to be restrained.” (McGonigal 54). My inner impulse that needs to be restrained is craving unhealthy food. If I am able to train my body to stay in a state of self-control, those cravings will no longer be a problem for
In his article, “Kids With Bedroom Smartphones Sleep Less: Study,” Alan Mozes suggests that a smartphone within children's bedrooms could undermine good sleeping habits more than television has. Mozes supports his claim through exemplification. He uses the results of various researches conducted by well-known magazines or universities. The author's purpose was to inform parents of children with no restrictions using their phones in order to help create a better future for the children who have become dependent on smartphones in their daily lives.

In our English class we have started to read a book named The Willpower Instinct. This book was written by Kelly McGonigal a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. In this book she has gathered information on willpower and how we can strengthen our willpower by challenging it. The challenge that I choose was that I will limit my time watching TV by only allowing myself to watch two hours of TV each day. By reading this book it has helped me understand where I'm at with my self control and has also shown how to strengthen my willpower in certain aspects. For example, with my challenge it has showed me that I am capable of restraining myself and has also shown how I can be more productive by cutting something out of my life.
