The Russian revolution was a time which ended the Russian monarchy, created the provisional government and led to Russia being the world’s first communist country. Some significant causes were food, coal, industrial supply shortages, Bloody Sunday, Russification and the living conditions for peasants. This essay will be educating you about the revolution and the significant causes of the revolution. In 1914-1915, there were extreme shortages of food, coal and industrial materials, which caused the prices to go up and factories to close down. This happened mainly because of the army. They had taken over most of the railway network so they could supply their troops. This left too few trains to carry supplies to the cities. So the people went hungry while most of the harvest rotted in railway sidings. By 1916, unemployment was increasing. This was because there were not enough trains to transport fuel for the factories which caused some to shut down, while others laid workers off. About 95% of the Russian population was poor peasant farmers, who were cut off from the rest of the world. They owned no land but still had to pay high rents to the countries land lords. They all lived a tough life as they lived in villages made of mud huts, all lined along the main road where they farmed the land to deliver food on their plates and pay the rent to wealthy landlords. While others had plenty of choices on where to work, the peasants only had two choices, to work as a miserable farmer or move to the city to work in one of the many miserable factories where the wages were very low. The hours for working in a factory were very long. The Russian law is that workers could not be forced to work more than eleven and a half hours a day, but, most factories bosses ignored this law and could easily bribe the police to look the other
