1. What do executives really mean when they say that "business is a team sport?"
Executives refer to business as a team sport for a variety of reasons. First, many business organizational structures arrange departments either in cross specialty teams or task oriented teams based on operational design and expected outcomes. These teams are designed with members who are assigned roles that increase overall team productivity. The team members bring talents, knowledge and a skill set that uniquely contributes to collective intelligence and resourcefulness. Through collaboration and team work, Successful teams achieve synergy, or “exceeds the sum of each individual’s contribution”.
Furthermore, each team creates strategic goals that help them achieve organization mission and visions. Just as in sports, teams aim to meet their strategic goals through collaboration. Just as effective sports teams reach championship games and break scoring records, teamwork in business organization results in increased productivity and job satisfaction. Like sports teams, effective teams are made up of members that trust each other.
Lastly, business teams function parallel sport teams with regards to interpersonal aspects. Business teams celebrate success at a team. Effective teams are cooperative in nature and communicate fluidly and candidly.

Katzenbach and Smith (1993a) recognise teams as the basic units of performance in organisations and identify a team as '...a small number of people with complimentary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.'
Importance of teamwork is that when a team works well together they tend to understand their team members strengths and weaknesses. Strong teamwork can benefit from the team members and I say this because they become more capable at splitting up tasks so that they are accomplished by the members of the team that are more highly qualified. If businesses didn’t have strong teamwork within their business, it could make everything a lot harder for managers of the business to settle certain staff members, whom can fulfil tasks at their incomparable standard.

Teams are an integral component of organizational success. They take on many forms and functions and can have various structures. Teams also conduct a wide variety of projects with goals of innovation or mitigation. An example, from my experience, of a project that required the execution from a team was the establishment of a finished goods inventory program within a paper manufacturing company. A project of this magnitude required that a diverse and multifaceted team be assembled.
This fable was a great way to promote the importance of a team and its functions. This book had many highlights throughout the context and I would highly recommend it to leaders of a corporation or of that of a team like setting. This book offered many great implications of the model and how to use it in many diverse settings when trying to build and manage successful teams.
Teams are more than just groups of people assembled in the same area, they are a collection of individuals dedicated to a common purpose and with a series of detailed performance targets, working together with complementary skills. Teams of people are encountered in various scenarios, not just in the workplace, but also throughout life, such as sports, associations, charities and voluntary services.

After reading The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Pat Lencioni, discussing the function of effective teams in class, and completing various team building exercises, I have developed a much better understanding of the importance of a proper team in a business setting and how good team work can produce more efficient and productive results.
When I have to work in a team, I try to reach success with others participants in assigned activities. I do not take the role of leader or follower. I consider myself just another participator, but always thinking about doing everything right and clean. I have always had in mind that teamwork are all those actions and activities that are carried out collectively. In order for there to be an excellent group work, I think is necessary is that the actions are developed collectively. This means that to carry out group work, the existence of an entertainer or coordination is not necessary. The collective performance of an action is sufficient, within the framework of mutual interaction.
In many aspects of our life, it is pervasive to work in a team. No matter in company, school, or another type of team it is necessary to be a part of a team and to achieve a team goal by corporations. People join a team with different personalities, goals, values, beliefs and needs. On the one hand, these differences can be a valuable quality of teams. On the other hand, these same differences inevitably lead to different levels of conflicts as well.
To fully discuss this topic, we must start with a simple definition of a team. Jon Katzenbach and Douglas Smith define a team in their best-selling book The Wisdom of Teams (Harper Business Essentials 1994), as
It is no surprise, therefore, that it is becoming a dependable and beneficial resource to companies. Also, extensive tasks that are essential to business operation must be completed by a team, tasks that involve moving parts in a changing market, and therefore the ability to work in a team is a valuable asset for employees, and the ability to craft a team that will work efficiently is a valuable asset to the business strategy of managers. But does there need to be a team for everything? The author articulates that to put a team on a small or simple task actually becomes inefficient. The decision to make a team stems from wanting an efficient allocation of resources. Since some work better on their own, that makes them valuable when it comes to small or large and simple tasks, that would not benefit much from the differing opinions of a team, nor the manpower of a team.
