Over time, change has been something that has always occurred in our society. Music is one of the things that has changed drastically over the decades. From its instruments, the use of technology, the purpose and the reason of the music. One of the things that makes music so different is the instruments and technology. In the 1920’s, jazz was popular. (1) Jazz was always the type of music people danced to. The instruments they used were different too, therefore jazz was the most common type of music. One of the most widely used musical instruments were trumpets. They were always the leading voice of jazz back in the 20’s. The saxophone was also one of the most important instruments back then. The drums were nothing major, it was always only for the beat. Before the 1920’s, the banjo was always the favored jazz instrument and was soon replaced by the guitar when jazz became more popular. Nowadays, trumpets and saxophones are not at all the main instruments. It even is rarely used in music since jazz is not the most preferable type of music anymore. Nowadays, electronic guitars and keyboards are already invented which makes music more different and not so …show more content…
Since it was the era of the first World Qar, music had a deeper meaning to each individual. Music was used as an element of celebration. Soldiers used music to celebrate surviving a day of war, and wives used music to celebrate their husbands returning home after war. Music also used to be something special and rare; they used to only play music occasionally. Friends or families used to get together to play music with each other. Now, there’s music almost everywhere we go. Music is always heard in restaurants and cafes as a form of entertainment. In the smallest parts of our everyday lives, such as going to the gym or spending the day at the mall, music is played out loud to entertain the people. Music really is anywhere and can be used for anything
Music can be used to describe how we feel on the inside when we ourselves can’t seem to find the words. Music has the power to help us discover ourselves or remember something we may have lost. I think Paulnack is right when he states that music can bring people together. Many people like the same genres and styles and feel something when they listen to it. Music can be found all over the world and can be related to everything around us. Music has been a part of our culture since the beginning of history, it’s constantly evolving giving each generation their on form of expression. The Jazz Age was a cultural movement that took place in America during the 1920 's (also known as "the Roaring Twenties") from which both jazz music and dance emerged. This movement matched with both the equally phenomenal introduction of mainstream radio and the conclusion of World War I. The 1920s was the decade that marked the beginning of the modern music era. Some of the popular music genres were Jazz, Dance Bands, Blues, and Broadway. The decade marked the beginning of independent record companies, smaller operations that weren’t afraid to take a chance on music and artists that the bigger companies shied away from.
The 1920’s was a time of innovation, creativity, and recklessness, causing a need for a new style of music. Jazz was fast-paced, upbeat, and very adaptive and it would go hand-in-hand with hedonistic lifestyle, truly giving the 20’s the title of The Jazz Age.
For as long as mankind has walked on this earth, music has been an important part of our culture and lifestyles. Each walk of life beats to a different drum. Different cultures use music for many aspects of their lives; for religious purposes, for celebrations, for comfort, for sorrow, for relaxation, for sports, for dances, for energy, for learning, for sleeping, and for sexual experiences. In the article, “Birthplace of Jazz,” Naydja Bynum writes that jazz “...is not an invention. It's alive. It grows, it dies, it changes, it stays the same” (Bynum). Many aspects of society in the 1920’s contributed to the life jazz music brought to the world and the impact it continues to have on modern music today. Post-war strains, racial segregation, and the wild, carefree life of the of the era had the greatest influence on the music of the 1920’s.
Right after WWI the economy wasn’t doing so well and all of the youth that had gone to war and even those that hadn’t were looking for something new to do. Musicians decided they had to keep up with popular fads so they started making a new sounding music that youth and young adults could dance to and it was called jazz.
Music, it helps the world go ‘round. Whatever kind of music you like, how often you listen to it, it's all up to you. Most likely, you will enjoy many different genres. Often times, it helps you express yourself beyond speech. And like the French poet Victor Hugo said, “ music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that cannot remain silent.”
A few technological inventions helped get the Jazz sound out to the people all of over the world. Radio broadcasting played a significant role in how the Jazz movement impacted the music industry. “Jazz swept the nation in the 1920’s, and the boom in the radio broadcasting brought it into American homes” (Benson, Brannen, Jr. and Valentine Vol. 7). However, radio broadcasting wasn’t the only thing that contributed to the success of the movement. “Some of the excesses of the Roaring Twenties came about because people had a little extra money to spend and more leisure time than ever before” (Benson, Brannen, Jr. and Valentine Vol. 7).
The first instrument I ever learned how to play decently and thoroughly was the trumpet and fell in love with it ever since. I joined my high school’s jazz band during my sophomore year which was long ago and it gave me a greater appreciation for the genre of jazz and my love for music as a whole. I stopped playing altogether once I entered college and I missed playing music. I play the trumpet that I personally own from time to time and it brings back so many good memories. I am curious to how the trumpet became very popular during the past and modern jazz bands of today.
Eventually the Trumpet would catch wind with the Jazz community and be an instrument staple within bands. In the early days of jazz, the trumpet and cornet was played in marches in New Orleans because of its volume and easiness to carry across the streets, which made it naturally a lead in marches. In the 1920’s and 1930’s, the trumpet would become very popular and a main instrument within the jazz community. Trumpeters usually set up riffs and set up a soloist while playing in bands.
It is no coincidence that ‘The Jazz Age’ overlapped with the Roaring Twenties. Jazz was a vigorous new music, characterized by improvisation, syncopation, polyrhythms and a strong beat. This music was symbolical to the integral, yet provocative, changes people were experiencing during the blooming post-World War I industrial society. It represented the end of an old era and the shift to a modern one.
Music originates from all over the world since the beginning of time. Complex or simple, fast or slow, loud or soft. It’s what you feel. It could be your method of escape or keeping you living. Music is love. Music is passion. Music is unity. Music is emotion. Music is belief. Music is beauty. Music is life. Music is perfection. Music is imperfection. Music is peace. “Through music we can live forever.”
Music has played a vital role in human culture and evidence based on archaeological sites can date it back to prehistoric times. It can be traced through almost all civilizations in one form or another. As time has progressed so has the music and the influences it has on people. Music is an important part of popular culture throughout the world, but it is especially popular in the United States. The music industry here is, and has been, a multi-million dollar business that continues to play an important role in American popular culture. This is also a art form and business that is forever changing as the times and more importantly, technology changes. Technology has changed the way music is made as well as how it is produced,
The role of music in society can be best imagined when one thinks of a world without music. Music serves as a personal
