ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Abercrombie, S. (1990). A philosophy of interior design. New York; Harper & Row. The rationalization of how interior design can be affected by the design thinking process is imperative to the comprehension of how interior design itself affects the psychological wellbeing of the end user. Abercrombie considers that conceptualization of the overall desired result is necessary as a starting point, rather than part by part. This human-centered umbrella approach is significant to design thinking as it encourages design to focus empathetically on the end user rather than as an afterthought. Taking Interior Design to another level (in business as well as in general) will involve the marriage of comprehensive …show more content…
Eidson directs the research in a timeline context including significant events and aspects which further the critical thinking process. Poldma, T. (2009). Taking Up Space: Exploring the Design Process. New York; Fairchild Books. Poldma dissects the Interior Design one element at a time. Her book will assist with the research required of this paper by providing evidence of the measured process by which the Interior Design profession is founded. She carefully elevates both the pragmatics and philosophy required by Designers within the industry as we are often asked to offer both subjective and objective feedback simultaneously. She encourages the functional use of the programmed elements within a space rather than simply filling the environment with unjustified items, essentially what is added into a space should not just take up space but serve a purpose. This purpose(s), as will be argued in the author’s paper, can only be justified with the use of design thinking. Brown, T. (2009, July). Designers – think big! [Video file]. Retrieved from http://www.ted.com/talks/tim_brown_urges_designers_to_think_big.html Brown seems to be the forerunner of expertise on design thinking which makes the addition of his TedTalk into the research vital. It is Brown who defines design thinking
However, this again defines Interior Design in relation to Architecture, and the link tying Interior Design and femininity will remain unbroken, a point made by Havenhand (Havenhand 2004).

Interior design and architecture are essential, and often overlooked, aspects of everyday life. In modern society people rely on function, durability, and visual appeal when selecting designs for their homes, businesses, and places of leisure. The way that a space is designed influences such things as mood, which, in the case of a business, can impact the productivity of employees and either draw or repel customers. In residential design, the design becomes very personal and, to be considered a successful design, must properly reflect the home owner while at the same time offering some practicality that makes the space livable. An effective design, for any space, must solve some problem, be it function, flexibility, or some other criteria. Simply solving a problem would not please the customer, however, unless it offered some visual appeal. Creating function with style is the real job of any interior designer, and is essential in a content society.
Interior design is a profession that is undertaken academically just like other professional careers. It mainly involves the development and imparting of skills, knowledge and attitudes that pertains the activities undertaken in the building and construction industry. The profession of interior designing goes beyond designing how a structure will look because it incorporates environmental issues especially aesthetic value of the structure to be constructed, the ergonomics, local fire codes and besides studying fundamental design issues and practice in the building and construction industry (Guerin & Thompson, 2014). Even though the profession is not as old as some of the established professions, the fact remains that the fundamentals of design
This is by far one of the most eye opening facts I’ve learned since being here and this help me understand in retrospect why mostly everybody always gave the same answers to what they though interior design was. Most of them based their ideas on popular television shows that –intentionally or not- portray interior design as merely decoration that happens in a very short period of time. In fact reading the article brought me back to the first day of this class when students were introducing themselves and explaining why they chose to be interior designers and some of them responded that they liked what they have seen in the shows to the point where one of them even mentioned that she wants to have her own show on HGTV.
Homeowners faced design choices that federal agencies, corporations, builders, architects, research and development organizations, and media outlets honed down into a smaller list for the masses. I frame the design options that homeowners had with two themes access, and science and technology. The theme of access addresses the social, cultural, and political structures that dictated design options. Science and technology encompass the construction processes and materials, interior materials, and objects within the house. In some instances, the theme of science and technology impacted access. I will illustrate how these themes frame and narrow the design options available to homeowners when purchasing or renovating their homes.
At the beginning of time, humanity began to create and invent objects for everyday use. These objects held many different purposes, from depicting class and roles in society, to creating a comfortable nest for anyone's functional needs. The transition period of artisans creating furniture, vs. designers making furniture is a pivitol one in society. It is where we, as people, realized comfort and functionality went hand-in-hand with aesthetics. This “transition” set up an example of where society needed to go in order to grow and move into the right direction,
In designing and building locations where people live and work, architects and planners are essentially involved in manipulating how the human behaves. The architect who is still
Interior design is a popular career for many people. That is especially those who are creative and who have a high number of ideas about how they would change a room or a whole home to look completely different. There are many different projects that are involved with interior design and they are all separate but related to one another. The people who conduct the projects are called interior designers. Development is the first phase of interior design (Pile, 2003). Then the designer has to talk with everyone involved in the project and make sure each person knows what his or her job is and how much everything should cost. How long the job is going to take is also important, and the homeowner or business owner needs to know that. Then the work can get started and everyone can work together to make the house or business look just the way the owner wants. Every owner has a different idea of how he or she wants a place to look when it is all done. If the interior designer does not agree with the way the owner wants it to look, and the two cannot agree, the owner needs to find a new designer that he or she can trust and work with on the project (Pile, 2003).
The horizon of thinking of a designer is limited to the project where she/he is working on. But with each project they do, they also achieve personal development as a designers.
Design is essential. Individuals regularly need reminding that everything around us is planned and that outline choices sway on about all.aspects of our lives, be it the situations we work in, the way we plan gatherings and holidays, or the way we manage to get the top off a cookie jar.
recent and then more of a design “classic” from 1992 [3]. Moreover, Tim Brown discussed in the Harvard Business Review in 2008 Design Thinking, [2] and, Jon Kolko wrote an article about 20 Design Thinking Comes of Age [2]. This gives a clear idea of different ways of Design Thinking. And Phil Brown recently discussed Why Design Thinking Conquered The World, [1] as well as, Steve Lennon discussed about Design Thinking [5]. The text, which is less relevant, is the Wicked Problems In Design Thinking as it is quite an outdated text book, but it is very influential indicates that it is either difficult or impossible to solve because of requirements or it 's incomplete that are often difficult to recognise. Overall, all these books and sources give applicable information what they believe an individual should do in the process of design thinking.
Design thinking is a user-centric methodology for identifying the customer 's problem and providing a solution. Although the concept is often applied to a physical product, it is equally valuable when applied to procedures, policies, systems, protocols, employee engagement, marketing communications, customer engagement and virtually all other
The concept of interiorization is spatially organizing the interior of a building to properly reflect its purpose and uses, while also incorporating the designer’s own personality and beliefs. Architects and designers must collaborate to create a look and feel that fits the role of the building and its intended use. This
This book report will contain information on the processes of design thinking and how it can help with analyzing and creating workplaces, and assessing job demands and stress, and how that can affect people’s health at work. I decided to do a summary of these two chapters because I feel that design thinking plays a big part in building a better environment for the people. We need to understand what the real problem is first and using the process of design thinking to help with better planning and better methods to approach each project. Also as many people are in the workforce, I want to understand the demands people are facing in their jobs and how their workplace can affect their health. I also hope to implement this knowledge in my future workplace and hope it will enable me to handle these demands and stress well.
