Question

Draw meachanism for an aldol condensation ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The word aldol is derived from two words i.e. aldehyde and alcohol. Aldol condensation reaction is the reaction between an enolate ion and a carbonyl compound, resulting in the formation of a beta-hydroxy ketone or a beta-hydroxy aldehyde. After that, a water molecule is removed to form the condensation product. The presence of alpha hydrogen is a must for this reaction to occur.

Step 2

Mechanism:

Consider the reaction between two ethanal molecules:

The reaction takes place in presence of a base, i.e. NaOH, KOH, etc., and water
