Effective management of any sized team requires a specific set of skills that go well beyond the skills you might have developed as an individual contributor in an organization (Miranda 2023). More than evaluating employees and meeting project deadlines, your job as a manager is to motivate employees to do their best work and inspire them to get invested in the company’s success. Understanding and adapting your management styles is key to effective leadership (Miranda 2023). However, I believe there is a distinction between being a manager and a leader and a clear difference between managerial leadership and transformative leadership.      Managers and leaders are two very different types of people (Zalenik 2004). Managers’ goals arise out of necessities rather than desires; they excel at defusing conflicts between individuals or departments, placating all sides while ensuring that an organization’s day-to-day business gets done. Leaders, on the other hand, adopt personal, active attitudes toward goals. They look for the opportunities and rewards that lie around the corner, inspiring subordinates and firing up the creative process with their own energy (Zalenik 2004).      Managers are usually categorized under a managerial leadership style.  Managerial leaders must have several skills and attributes (Rao 2017): They think strategically and build effective teams. They create a healthy organizational culture. They resolve conflicts, embrace change, and inspire others. They overcome volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. They are strategists, global thinkers, entrepreneurs, mobilizers, and change drivers (Rao 2017).      An example of managerial leadership is my manager, Kenneth Culp. Kenneth is the manager of Memphis Light, Gas and Water’s communication center, and he is solely responsible for implementing call center strategies for first-call resolution and building effective front-line management teams to delegate objectives that correlate with the company’s mission and vision statements.  Members of the front-line management team exhibit the traits of transformative leadership. Transformative leadership is a leadership style that can inspire positive changes in those who follow (Cherry 2023). Transformational leaders are generally energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate. Not only are these leaders concerned and involved in the process, but they are also focused on helping every member of the group succeed (Cherry 2023). As a training specialist, my role, as a member of front-line management, is to create a conducive training environment that stimulates the minds of new trainees by being passionate, encouraging, and enthusiastic when facilitating training material pertinent to their job responsibilities as well as the company and departmental objectives.      In my personal opinion, both styles of leadership are essential to effectively managing people. Managerial leadership provides structure and a visionary path of objectives to obtain environmental sustainability, whereas transformational leadership provides empathy, reliability, comfortability, and confidence for the employee to become loyal, efficient, and result-oriented while performing their job. All in all, leadership inevitably requires using power to influence the thoughts and actions of other people (Zalenik 2004). Thus, both styles are necessary for an organization to be successfully operative.
