Indicators of a Chemical Reaction
How can you know when a chemical reaction has occurred? A chemical reaction can result in formation of a precipitate, formation of a gas, or a change in color. The release of heat or light can also indicate a chemical reaction.  These observations are called indicators of a chemical reaction. They don’t guarantee that a reaction has taken place, but if you see one of these changes when you mix chemicals, you are alerted that a reaction may have occurred.  A chemical reaction is the process of breaking and forming bonds. This produces new molecules with different properties from the original ones.

The following are clues that indicate that a chemical change may have occurred:

  • Unexpected color change or odor change
  • Formation of a gas (bubbles form)
  • Formation of a precipitate (solid forms in a liquid)
  • Energy change (change in temperature, light, sound)

Don’t be fooled – A chemical reaction has not occurred when you:

  • See the fizz when you open a soft drink
  • Mix a yellow and blue solution to get a green solution
  • Freeze or boil water
