Researchers managed to narrow down the region of interest to a short portion of the 5q35-ter region, between some of the previously identified markers. Nevertheless, this narrowed region still counts around 300kb. Since it is a lot to sequence and because many non-significant variations will be found in such a long sequence, researchers decided to start with a portion that would make most sense. The 300kb region contains several genes; interestingly, one of them encodes a protein known to act in the metabolism of several cell types, including that of osteoclasts. Hence, they decided to start their sequencing efforts with the gene SQSTM1, which encodes the protein p62.
